Terrie Campbell always wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn’t until her daughter
Danni Chapman suggested that they study a Bachelor of Education together
that, in her fifties, she decided to pursue this dream. ‘Danni was working in
childcare because she was passionate about working with and teaching children.
I suggested to her to study to be a teacher as this would work better for her
as her family grew,’ Terrie said. ‘I will if you do,’ replied Danni. Terrie and Danni
enrolled at Griffith and supported each other throughout their studies.
‘Griffith made transitioning from work to study easier. All the lecturers and
teachers were very approachable and supportive,’ Terrie said. Since graduating
Terrie and Danni have both secured permanent teaching positions. ‘We both
love what we do and have very fond memories of studying at Griffith.’

in the power of education. ‘The significance of being an educator

education,’ Yasmin said. Emily agrees and said the reason she chose

He leads a team of teaching staff and manages

networking programs,’ he said. ‘I successfully gained
employment before the completion of my degree

my leadership skills.’ Jacob says the experiences
and learning offered through Griffith were
incomparable and have helped to shape the
way he engages with young people as a teacher.
‘The mix of theoretical and practical training

as a key ingredient of her life as a student, a message she took on
board at Griffith University’s Future Leaders Retreat on the Gold
Coast. The retreat brought year 12 students from 40 Queensland
schools together for three days of career mentoring and inspiring
sessions. The initiative was designed to help high school students
prepare for the transition to university and offered exclusive
career development, networking opportunities and the chance
to develop leadership skills. ‘The retreat was an ideal preparation

Jae Phillips has set off to west Queensland
to achieve her goal of teaching in a remote
community. This experience began during her
time at Griffith University. ‘Griffith taught
me that remarkable can happen, whether it’s
during a lecture, during a practicum 15 minutes
or even 6 hours away from home, or in the
classroom with 24 pairs of eyes watching you,’
she said. Throughout her four years, Jae
interacted with her mentors who encouraged
her to complete her practicums and internship
in rural and remote areas. These remote
placements were a highlight for Jae as she
experienced teaching outside a metropolitan
area and came to learn the importance
of education in shaping the opportunities
and positive experiences for young people.

Primary Education: Students selecting primary education as a major from their second year of study will also need to have completed an Authority Science subject (4,SA) or equivalent.
A bridging course (‘Foundations of Science’—Griffith Code 1001SCG) is available to those who are yet to reach this level.
Secondary Education: It is recommended that students select teaching areas that they have successfully studied in their senior schooling. In particular, for the mathematics teaching
area—Maths B or C (Mathematics or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or 2 for NSW, ACT) and for chemistry, physics or biology teaching areas—chemistry physics or biology respectively.
Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education program are expected to undertake and meet the benchmark in the Personal Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Educators
(LANTITE). These tests are a requirement for graduation for all students in teacher education programs who commence in or after 2017.
In addition, in response to an industry call for a common approach for non-academic selection criteria for initial teacher education programs, all applicants for this degree, both domestic
and international, will be required to submit a personal statement of 1,000 words, split into two parts. The first part will relate to motivation and suitability for teaching. The second
part will relate to prior experiences with learning or leadership activities. You will be assessed in areas such as engagement with learning and willingness to learn, resilience, as well as
communication and planning skills.

Libby Macdonald received a scholarship from the Cooperative
Research Centre for Living with Autism (Autism CRC) to
undertake her studies with Griffith. She lived a long way from
a campus and said it was only possible due to good online
resources. ‘Studying through Griffith, mostly online, gave
me the flexibility I needed to complete my studies around
family commitments. My research was looking at strategies
to support students on the autism spectrum in mainstream
classrooms,’ she said. ‘There is evidence that all children can
