While Clark Laidlaw is no stranger to rugby in New Zealand, he
is the first foreign coach to lead a national team. He talks about
his time playing on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the

Running out onto FMG Stadium Waikato in a black jersey will be a special
moment for All Blacks Sevens co-captain Tim Mikkelson.
While he’s played there countless times for his provincial union Waikato,
it will be the first time he has played there for the All Blacks Sevens.
It’s a smaller group than the 15s so you get to know
the guys a lot better and the team is really close. I’ve
been to some amazing countries and experienced
different cultures that I never thought I would do with
rugby.”
In the lead up to the Rio Olympics Mikkelson had to
make the decision to focus solely on sevens, finishing
up a long association with Waikato.
“When the Olympics came into it there were a few of
us who were playing ITM Cup that had the opportunity
to foucs on sevens fulltime. Being able to play on the
biggest sporting stage in the world was too good to
turn down.”
The next step in that sole focus has seen Mikkelson
and his team mates recently centralise in Mt
Maunganui.
