Welcome

… to the Extra Curricular Activities booklet from Berlin Brandenburg International School 2018 Term 3.

We strongly encourage all students to participate in this program as it offers a unique opportunity to meet
new friends, be a risk-taker, and share and learn new passions whilst having fun! The program enables
students to learn new skills and fully become part of our international school community.

The ECA program aims to further open the minds and eyes of our students, to provide them with
something new and challenging to look forward to. We are therefore excited to be able to offer such
diverse activities as circus activity, international award, athletic activities, and many more new activities.

We are very fortunate with the generosity and commitment of the BBIS staff, as well as external and
volunteer instructors; however, it is sometimes impossible to offer activities all year round. This does
however, provide our students with a greater opportunity to try different activities throughout the year.

Sincerely yours,

Felipe Buitrago

                                                                                                            2

Important Dates & Registration

Term 3 = Monday, April 9th 2018 – Friday, June 15th 2018

ECAs will run during the above dates, unless otherwise stated. All students who would like to participate
in an ECA must be registered using the online form. There is an expectation of 90% attendance during
school in order to qualify for ECA external trips (e.g. GISST basketball tournaments, Maths Competitions,
etc.).

There is a two (2) week trial period where students ensure they will commit to an ECA. After the two (2)
week trial period, all students will be billed for the ECA, whether they decide to continue or not. Students
will not be able to attend an ECA if they haven’t registered online by the deadline.

Deadline for Term 3 afterschool activity registration and trial period is Friday 20th of April.

Please register via the online link below:

                                                                             PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

IMPORTANT: All Primary School students should meet in the Cafeteria at 15.00 on the day of their ECA.
Student attendance will be confirmed before the ECA Leader collects students and walks them to their
activity. ECA Leaders will then walk relevant students to the Late Bus upon finishing at 16.30.

                                                                       DRESS CODE – SPORT ACTIVITIES

All participants of sporting activities are expected to wear appropriate, functional clothing. Indoor
activities require non-marking, clean indoor shoes.

                                                                                                          5

COMMITMENT AND ABSENCES

There is an expectation that once signed up for an activity, students attend the activity for the entire
length of the term. If circumstances prevent students from continuing or coming to an activity, we ask you
to inform the ECA Coordinator and the activity leader in advance.

Please email your ECA activity leader and the ECA Coordinator if your child will not be at their scheduled
ECA due to sickness, absence, etc.

                                                                                                   Costs

The majority of ECAs will include a moderate contribution to partially cover the costs they generate. The
costs for most ECAs are split into three (3) categories, and will be as follows:

FREE: No up front charge – there may be some small costs involved, but it will be clearly stated in the
booklet. There are a number of activities such as lunchtime ECAs that are free.

PAID: Up front charge – all paid ECAs should be invoiced within the first three (3) weeks of them
commencing, (by the 9th of February 2018 for Term 2). Most ECAs fall under this category.

Term 1: 100 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week
60 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

Term 2: 90 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week
50 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

Term 3: 90 Euros for ECAs taking place 2 or 3 times per week
50 Euros for ECAs taking place once per week

EXTERNAL: Up front charge direct from the instructor (not the school). There is NO free period for this
category. If a student does not continue after the 2-week trial period, a payment for the 1st or 2nd week
will be required. External instructors will provide you with a contract to complete and inform you directly
of the payment details.

                                                                                         CANCELLATIONS

If your child started an ECA and does not want to continue beyond the first two weeks (20th of April.),
you can withdraw without costs. To withdraw, you need to send an email cancellation to the ECA
Coordinator before the 20th of April.

                                                                                                         6

Late Bus Information

There is no additional fee required for extra buses that run exclusively for ECAs that finish at 16.30.

The late bus is available to Early Education, Primary and Secondary School students. There are late buses
on Monday through to Friday.

bus rules, as printed in the school handbooks, also apply for the late bus. Early Education and Primary
School students will need to be collected from the relevant bus stop where appropriate. If no one is
there to meet the student, they will be returned to BBIS (unless stated), whereby the relevant person will
be contacted.

Please indicate online which stop your son/daughter will be getting off at.

Any students being picked up will need to do so from the Atrium of House 3 (unless other arrangements
are made by the instructor).

The students will learn to draw, illustrate and paint. Based on classical techniques, each student can
develop his own interests and follow his own artistic needs. The drawing activities will have its focus on
outlines, innerlines and tone creating shadows, surface, qualities, focal point using classical techniques
(range of graphite, charcoal, ink, lightening on coloured paper). Furthermore, we will explore illustration
and painting using basic colour based techniques and experience the importance of under painting. We
will apply our knowledge of how to use the colour wheel and the importance of grey values. It is also
possible to develop an abstract approach on paper and canvas.

This course is designed to meet the needs of students from various experiences and ability levels, and will
certainly enhance any artistic development needed in the upper grades and the IB Visual Arts program at
BBIS.

Dance
The course will be designed to meet the needs of beginner level and intermediate level dancers. The
Structure of the class will begin with an introductory Ballet class on January 16th, followed by 3 weeks of
amore classically influenced Ballet/Creative Dance classes, then switch to 4 weeks of funkier, high energy
Jazz/Creative Dance classes, leaving us with one week for the final, informal showing on March 20th.
Students will achieve coordination, balance and learn how to control their bodies in motion. As well as
learning ballet and jazz technique, the students will gain further understanding in discipline, patience, and
develop self-confidence as well as build a healthy, strong physique. Most importantly, the class is designed
to be a welcoming, fun loving environment for all types of movers! The students will work on two separate
dance routines (one Ballet and one Jazz) to then perform on stage in the 2018 BBIS
Summer Fest and/or in an informal performance during the class time at the end of the Term.
Attire is extremely important! It should consist of tight fitting fitness clothing to bring awareness to
alignment within the body. Jeans are not permitted. Footwear is open to ballet/jazz shoes (preferable) or
solid coloured socks. Hair should be tied back for each class. This course is open to both females and
males.
* All students are permitted one trial class. If they do not wish to continue or if the class is full, the parents
are still obligated to pay 16€ via bank transfer to the teacher directly.
* For students who have taken this ECA in previous Terms: Class structure stays the same with brand new
warm ups, music, learned material, and final dance.
* There will be no class held on May 1st and May 22nd. This is included in the price.

Design and Create
Future architects, designers, physics majors, bridge builders, artists and all creative children are invited to
come and explore their original abilities. We will work with cardboard, tape, string, glue, paper and
whatever else we can find to create anything we design ourselves! Children explore the limits and uses
of connecting material, structure supports, moving parts, cutting and estimating. All creations are valued.
Each session children share their pieces with peers, explaining the making process and discuss problems
and how they were overcome. Take home your project every week!

Creative Writing
Writing is one of the most important skills a student can learn. Although this course seeks to introduce
students in the basics of creative writing, the course is highly recommended to any student who seeks to
learn how to better communicate using the written form. The two main components of this cou rse are
reading comprehension and writing. This course aims at supporting the school’s curriculum by helping
students improve their close reading abilities, a fundamental skill for the IB program at the same time as
the students get a chance to discover the joy of creative writing. Small excerpts from important texts will
also be read in the session in order to show by matter of example what the elements that make up a good
story are, how to develop strong characters and construct a coherent storyline.

This course will provide a space for beginner writers to come together to exchange their work. This
practice of reading in front of others will help students not only improve their oral skills and self-
confidence but it also, by encountering first hand the reaction and opinions of their peers, participants
will learn to detect what elements do and don't work in a story. Throughout the course students will also
perform different kinds of writing exercises, aimed at gaining speed, helping with the usual writ er's block,
prompting ideas and finding one's own tone and voice.

Dance
Through a balance of high energy and soft, emotional movement research, students will gain a basic
understanding of one of the most socially influential styles falling under the umbrella of
ContemporaryDance. We will begin the first day with contemporary jazz, then the class will be structured
to move biweekly through 34 different genres of dance, to be decided amongst the group on the first day
based on interest. These options include contemporary ballet, lyrical, musical theater, classical jazz,
contemporary jazz, hiphop, and improvisation/choreography. Students will gain self confidence, body
awareness, musicality, and lead an active lifestyle. Through each genre, students will learn proper
techniques including extensions, isolations, balance, and strength as well as more advanced turns, leaps,
and jumps. The students will work on small dance routines for each genre studied and, if the class wishes,
these can later be showcased on a stage at the 2018 BBIS Summerfest and/or in an informal performance
during the class time at the end of the Term.

This course is aimed to address beginner/intermediate level students. Attire should be tight fitting and
should not be restricting. Jeans are not permitted. Footwear can include dance shoes (preferable) or solid
colored socks. Hair should be pulled back for each class. This course is open to females and males.
* All students are permitted one trial class. If they do not wish to continue or if the class is full, the parents
are still obligated to pay 16€ via bank transfer to the teacher directly.
* For students who have taken this ECA in previous Terms: Class structure stays the same with new warm
ups, music, learned material, and dance combinations.
* No class held on May 11th or on May 18th. This has already been included in the price.

Ever wonder how classic stories such as CS Lewis´ ´The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe` became a film?
Ever wonder what it´s like to simply make a film from scratch? Every week we will wonder, brainstorm,
and then make. Starting with short stories written by us in groups of 2-3 people, we will learn to turn
written prose into script format. In Class, we will read short scripts, watch short films, and then become
the maker ourselves. Every week a group will have turned their story into a short script and every other
week, other students in the class can take on other roles such as: producer, script consultant, aspiring
directors and filmmakers to help their colleagues complete their work. Beyond the practice of writing film,
students will learn to navigate and grow from collaboration. Let`s make movies!

challenging examinations for students. The key to essay-writing lays in the capacity of the student to
structure the text and coherently develop and discuss an argument. In this course, students will learn the
necessary skills to successfully draft and edit compelling IB essays. The course will discuss both, past IB
examination as well as some of the best essays written in the 19th and 20th century. By the end of the
course, students will have mastered the art of essay writing, a skill that will prove most necessary for the
writing of university applications and bachelor degrees.

Role Playing Games Club (RPG Club)
The BBIS Role Playing Games Club (RPG Club) meets once a week. It was founded by IB CAS students in
2012 and is organised by Mr Gregory, who supervises the club and runs some of the games. We offer
members a chance to draw upon their imaginations (rather than their computers) to play table top
strategic games like classic old school “pen & paper” role playing games, such as Dungeons and Dragons
(D&D), using dice and miniatures. Students are responsible for purchasing their own figures, dice, drinks
and snacks, although you will not initially need anything, other than snacks and drinks. Free hardcopies
and pdf’s will be available for all RPG gaming rules on Managebac, which we al so use for communicating
and tracking our adventures and character development. Gaming options for this year currently include:
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition & Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. The groups can also play:

Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Warhammer 40k, Dungeons and Dragons,
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st ed – 5th ed), Traveller, Mega Traveller, Mutant Futures and Shadowrun.
We are currently playing two groups who are playing Advanced Labyrinth Lord (AD&D 1e), which are being
run by Tim and Leo, a 5th Edition D&D group run by Andy, and the other group is playing Traveller, a Sci-
Fi setting, which is run by Mr. Gregory. The group currently has two members of staff, 23 members who
are girls and boys, from grades 6-12. Come along and join us for an afternoon of creativity, high fantasy
and science fiction. The sessions normally run from 15:00 until 17:30 and students who wish to stay
until 17:30 will be required to either be picked up or get home independently of the late bus. All
students under 16 years of age will require parental permission in order to do this. Preferential places
will be given to last terms members who wish to remain in the club, but new members are very welcome.
For more information, please contact either Mr. Gregory in room 3115 or via email
steven.gregory@bbis.de.

TED-Ed Club
The TED-Ed Club (https://ed.ted.com/clubs) is for students who are unabashedly curious about the world.
It helps students to develop presentation literacy and public speaking skills. Students will learn from
sample TED talks, research, develop and record their own TED-style talk on a chosen topic and upload
their video to YouTube. There will also be opportunities to connect with students from TED-Ed clubs in
other countries. Some examples of topics that TED-Ed students have explored: the effect of laughter on
someone who’s sad, the danger and excitement of dirt biking, the reason human beings need so much
sleep, the thought of infinity. The possibilities are endless and every student has an idea worth sharing!
