Bonus Day 5
YES PLEASE!!
There is an optional bonus 5th day you can add to your Leopard
Trail hike. The magnificent Cedar Falls Day Hike really should not
be missed. Getaway Magazine described the Cedar Falls Day Hike
as “One of those moments of extremely beautiful life!” This hike
leaves from the Cedar Falls Base Camp (where you start and finish
The Leopard Trail). Book yourself into one of the accommodation
options at Cedar Falls either before or after your Leopard Trail
hike, and enjoy the magic of Cedar Falls!

When to Hike and the Weather
The Leopard Trail is a great hike at any time of year. Summer is hot with the daily average
in December, January and February at 26 degrees Celsius. Days can get up to the high 30s, so be
prepared to walk in the early mornings and late afternoons, spending your midday hours at the
lunchtime mountain pools. Autumn and Spring (March, April, May, September, October and
November) can provide great fair weather hiking, with average temperatures in the early 20s. As winter
approaches, an occasional cold front will blow through, dropping temperatures considerably. Winter
days in June, July and August are often perfect for a long days hiking if you don’t like the heat, with
temperatures averaging around 16 degrees Celsius. Nights drop to zero though, so make sure you
have a warm sleeping bag, hot water bottle and camping mattress. Rain in the Baviaanskloof is an
unpredictable affair. All months of the year have only around 4 days of rain so, statistically, your
chances of dry weather are pretty good. Like all mountain areas, the Baviaanskloof can experience a
range of weather conditions over any 4-day period. You are advised to prepare for rain, wind, cold and
heat.

AN EVOCATIVE MOUNTAIN RETREAT
Thabaphaswa conceals, in its magnificent natural setting, one of South Africa's best-kept architectural and leisure

secrets - an evocative mountain retreat. Designed by the inimitable Heinrich Kammeyer, the retreat's camps fit into

their specific sites as though custom-made - which they were, of course.

The owners' wish to blend nature and the use of natural materials were perfectly executed. Kammeyer understood

that the very special quality of the setting demanded a unique architectural vision. Thabaphaswa provides a wide

range of accommodation. (Rates apply for reservations of 2 nights or more. Reservations one night only (e.g

Saturday night) @ 1.5 of accommodation rate applicable). Good bushveld firewood and ice are available at the

farmhouse.

Stamvrug Hiking Trial
      SV*

Warmbath, Limpopo
Stamvrug hiking trails, which first opened in May 1992, was designed with the
assistance of the Centre for Eco Tourism of the University of Pretoria. Since then,
thousands of nature lovers have wound their way around and across the rim of a
basin which constitutes one of the few unspoilt, unique Waterberg ecosystems. Nine
years later, in 2001, the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve was granted international
status by UNESCO. It now forms part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves
and is the first Reserve of this kind registered in Southern Africa.

The network of 10 different hiking trails, ranging from about 4 km to about 12 km
with various grades of difficulty, caters for hikers with different levels of fitness and
experience. The routes wind through a wide variety of landscapes ranging from
grassy plains, ravines, hills, streams and woods to plateaus with stunning views.
There are two base camps, namely Kloof, which is situated at the edge of a ravine,

are equipped with bunk beds and braai utensils but bring your own bedding and

        L* Hiking Trail

Fouriesburg, Eastern Fee State
Lesoba is situated in one of the most picturesque areas of South Africa. The
Sandstone Mountains with their eroded kranses make for a photographic dream.
Hidden away among these mountains, rock pools glisten in the sun and the streams
that feed them, trickle out of crevices in the rock like tears. Rock overhangs that
have given shelter to human and animal alike over centuries abound in the
sometimes-inhospitable environment that forms the border with the mountain
Kingdom of Lesotho. There are two-day trails of 11 and 7 km each from the central
base camp plus a short nature trail that follows a stream for about 2.5km through
riverine bush. The first trail takes the hiker up a steep cleft in the rock to the top of
the mountain. A detour from here takes one to a vantage point with panoramic
views across the Caledon River to Lesotho.

5km trail. Starting out at the Lodge, you will hike along the stream,
through grasslands and dongas. The 9km trail goes into the dongas
and up the mountain and has surprises around each bend with the
rock cliffs and rock formations. Climb to the rock overhangs and
admire the amazing views. There are ladders and chains to help you
negotiate the steep mountain section of the hike, which passes ancient

Hartbeespoort Dam / Pretoria / JHB
Hidden among the bushveld of the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains, B’sorah

is situated near the Hartbeespoort Dam. Despite being so close, you will find

yourself in a totally different world – Africa at its bets. The 1600-hectare

farm consists of dense bush, open grassland and riverine vegetation which

runs along streams flowing into the Skeerpoort river. Game includes kudu,

nyala, waterbuck, impala and blesbuck, as well as warthogs, baboons and

nocturnal species such as brown hyena and jackal. Here you can relax in a

natural environment where the twitter of birds, the presence of roaming

game and the trickle of a gentle stream is all that surrounds you.

4 & 7 km:
All the trails start on the same route and then the 4km and 7km turn off onto

a shorter trail back to the finish. Both the 4km and 7km trail are easy and

does not require much fitness. The trails start through a beautiful forest

area, before the 4km and 7km split from the 12km and flow through some

rocky outcrops/koppies and then back to the finish.

12 km:
The 12km trail runs along the Skeerpoort river and a very old canal still in use

today, which also includes a designated swimming area in the river. At the

point where the Skeerpoort river passes our

farm, it is still very clean and safe to enjoy a nice cool down in the river. The

trail then continues to its highest point (1420m), before descending back

down to join up with the 7km trail before reaching the koppies.
