Morningside STEM Elementary School

                                      February 2020

"Morningside STEM Elementary School is changing the future
                         by encouraging creativity, independent thinking,
                                   and unlimited possibilities”

Message from the Principal
Technology Infusion at Morningside STEM Elementary:

As we enter into the month of February there are many noticeable
changes taking place throughout the building. However, the most
obvious change in classrooms has been a recent shift to 1:1. This means
that as a building, we now have one device per student enrolled.
Students in kindergarten through rst grade will be utilizing iPads, while
students in second through fth grade will have laptops. This change
provides students with access to many quality learning programs to further support the creativity and
critical thinking of students. Many students have already started the process of creating reports
through Minecraft, utilizing green screen applications to bring projects to life, and writing code to
complete complex tasks.
Eagle News - Sioux City ...
In addition to the changes in technology, grade levels are also continuing to participate in their
interdisciplinary STEM units as outlined by the building’s STEM Blueprint. Most recently some of these
learning opportunities have included kindergarten students checking the building and making
recommendations to Troy Windeshausen (Building Engineer) on locations of existing air drafts to
conserve energy, fourth grade students constructing and improving retaining walls to prevent soil
erosion, and rst grade students designing their own legends related to constellations. The results of
unit projects can be seen in the grade level display cases when entering the building.

In addition to technology and STEM learning opportunities taking place, parent-student-teacher
conferences are fast approaching and will take place on Monday, February 24, and Tuesday, February
25. Due to conferences, there will be no classes held on Monday, February 24, and Friday, February 28.
Please follow the directions on the letter that was sent home with your student to sign up for
conferences by going to www.myconferencetime.com/morningside. We are looking forward to seeing
you at conferences and for the opportunity to visit with you about your child’s progress. If you have
any questions or concerns related to parent-student-teacher conferences, or additional information
contained in this newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact us at (712)274-4048.

Mrs. Fox's First Grade
The rst grade has been learning about constellations and legends in Literacy and Science. Our class
learned about the legend of Orion and the stars that make up the constellation. Our class
brainstormed and came up with some ideas for our own legend and created Jack the Alligator. Our
legend included his name, where he lived, what Jack did and how he looked as a constellation. Our unit
ended with a visit from the Science Center of Iowa with a planetarium. We were able to go into the
dome and see constellations and how they look at night along with some of the names of many
constellations. What a great way to come back to school after winter break!

What we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.

I love teaching about Martin Luther King, Jr. He believed in equality for all
no matter the color of your skin. I love that kids today, especially in
kindergarten, do not see this difference in each other. My students were
so sad when they learned how kids with “brown skin” were treated so
many years ago. Here is what they learned:

Jackson-“To be nice to each other.”
Benson-“We need to treat others the way we want to be treated!”
Emma-“He wanted everybody to be treated the same way no matter the color of skin.”
Katt-“He wanted everyone to go to the same movie theatres.”
Korbyn-“I like that he changed the world!”
Jonathan-“I learned about being nice.”
Kyan-“People could use the same fountains.”
Sophie-“Black people and white people could go to the same movies.”
Gabriel-“Use words to solve problems, like that’s not cool!”
Angel-“We need to be nice to white people and black people.”
Esmeralda-“I learned to be really, really nice and use my words when someone is mean to me.”
Harper-“Be nice and helpful to others.”
Jose-“Be nice to everyone!”
Sharla-“Don’t hurt kids.”
Wyatt-“Be nice so everyone can learn in the same schools.”
Huy-“Be nice to people.”
Susie-“He wanted everyone to be treated the same at movies, restaurants, and schools!”
Dallas-“That he wants us to eat at the same restaurants.”
Averie-“Treat all the people the same.”
Brooklyn-“Everybody treated the same and be nice.”
Eagle News - Sioux City ...
Julian-“He wanted everyone to be treated the same. Be nice to brown people, let everyone go to the
same schools and use the same drinking fountains.”
Marco-“Be nice to the brown people.”
Alazar-“He said white people and brown people can sit anywhere on the bus.”

to have peace in the world. A lot of people get hurt from not helping others. I think that we all should
work together. I have a dream that there would be peace in the world."

to stop people from littering, because it hurts animals. Garbage in the ocean gets caught on the
animals. Plastic bags, shing line, and trash get in the water. People need to stop littering, because
animals deserve better."
Lela

to stop people from using alcohol and drugs. If you have drugs you could be acting strangely every
day. If you have alcohol, you could be bouncing off the walls. If you drive a car you could go out of
control, you could have to go to the hospital. Please stay away from alcohol and drugs!"

to have no tobacco. It is bad for you. It can kill you. It can give you lung cancer. Smoke can get into
your lungs. You could be put in the hospital for a long time. It can give you a heart attack. Smoke gets
into your lungs and your veins harden. Don't smoke!"

District and School Climate Survey: Coming Soon
Every voice matters in Sioux City Community Schools. That’s why we need to hear from all parents and
guardians. Provide feedback using our District and School Climate Survey, which is open February 4 -
March 13. The survey is available in English or Spanish.

How to take the survey:
· A link will be sent to parents/guardians by email, text message, and voicemail.
· If you do not receive a link, please contact 712-224-7471 to request a link.
· Paper surveys are available for pick up at your child’s school.
· Take the survey online at your child’s school while at conferences.

The survey asks for feedback on student and academic support, safety and behavior, school
leadership, and family involvement. We will use the results to better understand our students’ needs,
determine our strengths, and identify opportunities for improvement.

All survey responses are strictly con dential. The District has partnered with an independent research
and communications rm, K12 Insight, to administer the survey and compile the results. District
employees will not know who participates or see individual responses.

If you have questions, please contact Mandie Mayo, Director of Communications, at
mayoa@live.siouxcityschools.com.
