Supporting Actor, Best Actress, Best Featured Actress, Best
Featured Actor, Best Ensemble, Best Scenic Design, Best Tech
Execution, and over $20,000 in fine arts scholarships through
      this program.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS
 RISD provides the more expensive band and orchestra
instruments (cello, string bass, oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet,
tenor and baritone saxophone, tuba, baritone, and
percussion). Students pay a $100 fee to cover maintenance
and repairs. The fee is payable in installments over the year
and waived for students who show a true need.
 RISD Fine Arts has consistently utilized bond funds to
purchase quality used instruments that RISD students typically
buy themselves – flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, and
trombones. These instruments are used as rental instruments
across RISD for students in need.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS
 Beginning in Fall 2008, RISD established an instrument rental
plan from a local vendor that does not require a credit check,
as many of these parents operate exclusively in cash.
 Fine Arts performance attire (uniforms, etc.) is provided by
RISD bond money. For the first time ever, all students in
grades 7-12 who are in band/choir/orchestra will be provided
proper formal concert attire to look their very best.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS
 All RISD fine arts programs are no-cut; however, we do
place students in ability-grouped classes at the secondary
level. This facilitates individual and group achievement in
  a team environment.
 Many aspects of our secondary fine arts programs have
participation by all students together – marching band,
select choir performances, and select orchestra
  performances.
ADDITIONAL EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCESS

 All RISD music booster clubs offer a private lesson
scholarship program to economically disadvantaged students.
 All RISD fine arts booster clubs provide payment plans for
  families in need.
 All programs are allowed opportunities to evaluate family
needs and make informed decisions to benefit the child.

 Developing our teachers to grow themselves and to prepare
our students for the rigorous world

updates to the current foot print at all 8 JH campuses. That
could have included carpet, paint, furniture, and/or teaching
       resources.

Challenges
TEACHING SPACE CHALLENGES
  Secondary
 Ensuring that we can add or expand space as our programs
     grow
 We want to work with our campus administrators to
identify true needs and look at creative ways to solve these
within the current footprint of the building
  Elementary
 Elementary music classes sometimes share space
 Band/Orchestra areas need to be consistent, quality learning
     environments
 RISD is unique in dealing with 6th grade space for
     instrumental music
RETENTION

 To remain competitive in the marketplace, we will benchmark
stipends and staff allocations against neighboring districts and
make recommendations for the 2017-2018 budget.
RISD Fine Arts
 Recommendations
PRIORITY #1 - STAFFING

 Continue to attract and retain the very best Fine Arts staff by:
 Providing them the resources they need to engage, educate,
and retain students and to help those students achieve at the
highest level possible both individually and collectively.
 Remain competitive with our benchmark districts.
 Continue to grow the JH band, choir, and orchestra staffing as
   enrollment grows.
 Continue to evaluate work loads of all staff so that they feel
like they are able to serve their kids at the highest level
   possible.
PRIORITY #2 - TEACHING SPACES
 Continue to evaluate all campuses and maximize space
  available.
 Continue looking at long term solutions for elementary spaces
that need attention (elementary music/6th grade band/
  orchestra)

PRIORITY #3 – PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS
 Evaluate and assess needs as they come up:
    Ex: Visual arts supplies/repairs
 Continue to support professional development opportunities
for staff travel and increase staff members out of pocket
  expenses
 Evaluate and plan for inflation of expenses:
 Ex: Contest entry fees, repairs for equipment
