for tonight’s Pitching-In Isthmian Premier League game between
Margate and Cheshunt.
The Gate are on a run of 4 league games unbeaten after Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Leatherhead. The pitch
was is good condition despite the weather, but with close efforts from Evans and Ufuah the points were
shared. That is a return of 6 points from our first 4 games.
Tonight’s opponents also have 6 points from their first 3 league games with wins against Horsham and
East Thurrock and defeat to Potters Bar. A win tonight for Cheshunt or Margate could see either team
break into the top 4 and the play-off places.
After tonight’s game we are next in League action away to Lewes, for anyone who wishes to travel on

From the Manager Good evening and hello everyone, Welcome to Craig Edwards and his team for what I’m sure will be a really tough game as it always seems to be against one of Craig's teams! Looking back on the last two games I am really split on how I feel; to be one nil down against a Hornchurch team that I expect to be right up there and show the character to come back I’m really pleased with but on the flip side we completely dominated the first half and should have been comfortably in front! There are so many positives to take from the performance and to think they are a team full of experience and players that have played at a higher level whereas our group are very young and are gaining experience each week at this level. I was especially pleased with their willingness to work for every ball right up until the final whistle. On Saturday it wasn’t a great game. I think after Leatherhead conceded 7 the week before they literally shut up shop for the first 45 minutes and it was very difficult for us to break them down. Second half we had a great opportunity when Conor Evans went 1 on 1 with the keeper but unfortunately he missed the target and the game finished goalless. I felt for Conor as he deserves a goal as his last few performances have been brilliant and I know once he gets one goal he is the sort of player that will go on a run and get plenty more! Enjoy the game tonight, please do cheer us on to hopefully our first home win of the season and have a great night at Hartsdown Park. Jay From the Chairman Good evening everybody, May I extend a warm welcome to our visitors tonight from Cheshunt and wish their Board, Management Team, Players and Supporters a pleasant and enjoyable visit to Hartsdown Park. We have now climbed to 7th position having not lost any of our first four matches in the league. Jay looks to be working his magic and getting a bonded team together with some very inspiring and attractive football, I`m sure as we progress through the season things will get even better. We are still living in troubled times and the joy of watching non-league football cannot be overlooked and we are incredibly lucky to have supporters watching our games; as always thank you for observing the safety announcements while enjoying the football at HDP. Our Ladies play Ramsgate on Sunday, we wish Evan and the Bluebirds the best of luck and a successful game. We had two successful games against them last year and we are all hoping for a repeat this weekend. SUPPORTERS CLUB OK, another Tuesday night football this time at home to Cheshunt, the third Tuesday night game in as many weeks in what is already a surreal season with limited crowds at the non league Steps 3 and 4, Isthmian, Northern and Southern Leagues, no spectators at Step 1, the EFL and Premiership, and no sign of any football at Step 2 in the National Leagues as it stands although the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was due to be played last Saturday so last minute changes could be on the cards. And so VAR is at it again with the number of late and very suspect deliberate handballs given. It is claimed by certain BBC football pundits that the directive issued to the Premiership is that FIFA want all top European Leagues to be the same, but these same pundits (or is it the Match of the Day Editor’s thoughts) feel that the Premiership should be different as it is unique. That view has got to be wrong as all football should be played under the same Laws of the Game and it is just down to the interpretation of those Laws by the match day officials between the countries. It is bad enough that VAR is sterilising our sport with referees and their assistants having decisions made in real time taken away from them by a group, although all qualified referees, watching games in slow motion and from different angles several times delaying the game and helping to add 10 minutes per match when it is not needed. They are indeed gloried TV viewers and it raises the question as to who has a financial interest in this use of technology. Matters are not helped by the likes of Jonathan Pierce and his poor match day commentating. Poor match management at the elite level just makes matters worse further down the football pyramid with officials at Margate’s level and below coming in for more scrutiny and abuse for every decision made. Certainly something the powers that be had not thought might happen, but must be considered before things escalate. I would like encourage all supporters to turn up at Hartsdown Park this coming Sunday, 11th October, to watch the Margate Ladies face the Ramsgate Ladies in the League derby. The Bluebirds are flying at the moment and in their last home fixture against Long Lane hit 13 goals in a clinical display putting them top of the table. So here is looking to a bumper crowd and see if we can beat the 275 fans that turned up to watch the Isthmian Reposs Cup tie between the two teams last October despite the rain. Just a quick well done to our grounds-man, Graham Ives, who was denied the chance to run the actual London Marathon, but ran a virtual one and still raised funds for his charity by holding an auction including a voucher for a tattoo, goal keepers gloves from the Crystal Palace shot stopper, and a Fulham players signed England shirt which was won fair and square whatever Terry Scott may feel. 6

Forty, Twenty, Ten—A look back in the MFC Archives
3rd October 1970 Another home fixture and Margate would have the 1201 fans in Hartsdown Park this
Saturday afternoon singing “The Wonder of You”, the song current sitting in the UK Chart number 3 for
Elvis, as we crushed Bedford Town 5 – 1 at home. The goals came from Hughie Cochrane, Dave
Jarman, Johnny Ray and Bill Swain meaning in the fourteen games played by the Blues (actually we
wore white that year) there have been 52 goals scored for and against us. Another thing that should be
noted that of the twenty two teams in this years Southern League Premier Division four clubs went on to
get into the Football League (two sadly came back down and one has gone bust). Of the remaining
eighteen clubs seven others also went bust and had to reform lower down the football pyramid. It might
be the sport for all but running a football club is still costly then as it is today.

4th October 1995 Another cup competition tonight as we meet Sittingbourne in the first leg of the First
Round of the Southern League Cup. The first leg is away up the north Kent coast as we return with a
3 – 1 victory in front of 467 fans. A brace from goal machine Martin Buglione and one from skipper Paul
Manning got us home. Manning must like cup competitions having previously been a FA Youth Cup
winner with Millwall.

4th October 2005. Another Margate match and yet another draw for the Blues. Today watched by 807
supporters we entertained Billericay from Essex and added them to our list of shared points opposition.
Our goal scorer was Gavin McGowan who held the record as the youngest Premiership player for
Arsenal until Cesc Fabregas took the honour. We have now reached the 10 game point in the season
where you can have a good idea of who will be fighting for the title and who will be struggling with
relegation. (So the bookies who have already paid out on Fulham’s relegation from the 2020/1
Premiership League after 3 matches ARE jumping the gun........not that I am bitter and twisted towards
them, being a Fulham fan) Back to Margate and with the current playing record I feel we are heading for
mid-table safety already.

Since 2011, Cheshunt FC has been Cheshunt Sports & Leisure Ltd, with
Dean Williamson, our chairman, guiding our club and premises’
development. Major investment on and off the pitch has been a major
feature of the past few years, with extensive refurbishment of our stadium
and entertainment facilities and the construction of new grass pitches and
the amazing new 3G surface.
Our vision is to produce a Conference standard football club and
academy, together with first-class sports, leisure and business facilities
that will support Cheshunt Football Club’s desire to become a centre of
sporting excellence.
Cheshunt Football Club has a rich history, which has made if a part of the
town’s heritage and culture. Below we look over the club’s history
throughout the decades.
1880s – 1930s – The Original Cheshunt Football Club
The original Cheshunt Football Club was formed in around 1880, just 17
years after the FA codified the laws of football. They played at Cheshunt
Cricket Club’s Recreation ground on Albury Ride and wore a black and FORM GUIDE
white striped kit.
Their main achievements include winning the Herts Senior Cup in 1924

and the Herts Charity Cup in 1900/01, 1903/04 and 1905/06. They
reached the FA Amateur Cup semi-final in 1903/04 and joined the v Potters Bar Town
Athenian league after the Great War.

After finishing bottom four seasons on the trot and heavily in debt, they
disbanded in 1931 when the cricket club raised the rent. At the time they
were the oldest amateur club in Hertfordshire.

1940s – The ‘New’ Cheshunt Football Club
In July 1946, at a public meeting in the Co-op Hall in Waltham Cross, a
group of local businessmen decided to resurrect the club, using local junior
side Crossbrook Sports as the basis for the new team, retaining their
amber and black colours and with Roy Bailey as their manager.
The new club applied for and were accepted into the London League,
playing in division one for the 1946-47 season. They finished runners-up
and won the League Cup and Herts Charity Shield.

Initially, home games were played at the Gothic sports ground, off Theobalds Lane, east of the Great Cambridge Road,
before moving to College Road the following season.
Cheshunt then won the division one title in 1947/48 and again in 1948/49 season and reached the Herts Senior Cup final
for the first time. The 1949/50 season saw us in the London League Premier division and playing at our newly opened
Cheshunt Stadium on Theobalds Lane. We won the championship – beating Tilbury on the last day of the season to clinch
the title from them – and reached the 3rd round of the Amateur Cup, defeating holders Bromley in front of 5,000 spectators
(still the ground record) along the way.
1950s – Searching for Success
Drainage problems forced the club to abandon Cheshunt Stadium and move to a new ground on Brookfield Lane. We
returned to ‘The Stadium’ (as it is often referred to) in 1952/53 but a poor playing surface meant a return to Brookfield
Lane, this time as the tenants of Tottenham Hotspur, as Spurs were now using it as their training ground. At the end of the
1957/58 season Cheshunt were asked to leave and so returned to Cheshunt Stadium where we have played to this
present day.
The side that won the London League in 1950 included many talented players, including Arthur Ault, Fred Pointing and
Dudley Sapsford, but most notable were Ralph Wetton, who went on to play for Tottenham Hotspur, and George
Ferguson, who was selected to play for Scotland’s Amateur side twice in 1950 – the only man to play in an international
whilst a Cheshunt player.
Apart from moving grounds, Cheshunt also moved around various leagues. We were members of the Delphian League
from 1951/52 and 1954/55, rejoined the London League between 1955/56 and 1958/59 and then left to become founder
members of the Aetolian League between 1959/60 and 1961/2… all without achieving any notable success. In 1957/58 our
team reached the FA Cup 4th qualifying round for the first time. It’s an achievement the club has matched three times
since, but never bettered.
1960s – Ambitions Achieved
Cheshunt joined the Spartan League for the 1962/63 season and won the title at the first attempt. The following season the
team won the Spartan League Cup.
For the 1964/65 season, Cheshunt joined the Athenian League, playing in division two. The following season we finished
runners-up under the management of Terry Medwin, the former Spurs and Wales international. That same year, we lifted
the Herts Charity Shield.
The division one title was won in 1967/68, beating Wembley in another head-to-head championship decider. We joined the
Premier Division in the 1968/69 season and achieved respectable positions right through to winning the Athenian
Championship in the 1975/76 season, guided by the club’s most successful manager, John Drabwell.
1970s – The Golden Years
Cheshunt’s time in the Premier Division saw the Club’s most successful period since the 1940s. We won the Mithras Cup
in 1969/70, the London Charity Cup in 1973/74, the Athenian League Cup and East Anglian Cup in 1974/75 and the
Athenian League Cup again in 1975/76. We also reached four Herts Senior Cup finals, two Mithras Cup finals as well as
another East Anglian Cup and Herts Charity Cup finals.
It was during this period that Cheshunt saw Eddie Sedgwick chalk up the club record for goals (148) and John Poole
began his run of record appearances (512). The team also welcomed former Spurs player Mike Dillon in the mid-1970s.
1980s – Highs and Lows
Cheshunt joined the Isthmian League Division Two in 1977/78. We found little success until the 1981/82 season, when we
finished runners-up to Worthing and were promoted to division one. We also reached the last eight of the FA Vase, going
out to Wearside Club Blue Star in the quarter-final, Cheshunt’s best performance in any national competition.
Cheshunt were relegated from division one at the end of 1983/84 season. However, this was the time when a young Iain
Dowie first appeared for the Ambers, before leaving to play for Luton, West Ham, Southampton and Northern Ireland and
then going on to manage Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic and Coventry City. Paul Fairclough, once manager of Barnet,
also played a few games for the Ambers in the early 80s.
In 1986/87 Cheshunt were relegated into the Spartan League and spent the next six seasons in a state of persistent
frustration, unable to achieve the consistency needed for promotion. We did, however, pick up the Herts Centenary Trophy
in 1991/92 and finally finished in a top three place in 1992/93, along with the Spartan League Cup, which was a good
enough performance to go back up into the Isthmian League.

1990s – Hovering on the Brink
Cheshunt rejoined division three of the Isthmian League for the 1993/94 season and achieved promotion to division two at
the first attempt.
The club was relegated to division three in 1997/98, but bounced back immediately the following season. We consolidated
with mid-table positions until being effectively relegated to the new division two at the end of the 2001/02 season due to
League restructuring and ground improvements not meeting League deadlines.
2000s- Silverware and Security
In season 2002/03, Cheshunt won the division two title (our first league title for 27 years), reached three cup finals and
also achieved the necessary ground-grading to play at a higher level. Success continued in the 2003/04 season, finishing
third in division one north and reaching the final of the Herts Charity Cup.
During this season, striker Darrell Cox was selected for Grenada’s squad in their World Cup qualifying tie with Guyana.
Sadly, Cox spent the match on the substitutes’ bench and was not brought on. This is the nearest Cheshunt have come to
producing a full international while still an active player for our club side.
With the FA restructuring of the non-league pyramid taking effect for the following season, Cheshunt were promoted to the
Isthmian Premier division for 2004/05. We found ourselves relegated on the final day of the season by the narrowest of
margins (identical points and goal difference with Wealdstone meant that they stayed above Cheshunt by virtue of having
scored two more goals), only to then find we were saved due to the disbandment of Hornchurch that summer.
However, the Ambers were moved across into the Southern League, where we spent a memorable 2005/06 season
(finishing two places above the relegation zone) and lifting the Herts Charity Cup for the first time in the club’s history
During this season, Cheshunt signed Lloyd Opara from Redbridge, one of the best players in the Southern League. There
were many rumours speculating about Opara, with tabloids reporting that he was on the verge of being snapped up by
Chelsea for a cool £1 million. In reality, the club sold him to Peterborough United for an estimated £22,000. He went on to
make 8 appearances in League Two and scored just 1 goal. Lloyd came back to Cheshunt on a free transfer in the latter
stages of the 2006/07 season. We also re-signed striker Darrell Cox for a record transfer fee in the 2006/07 season.
2007/08 saw the club break plenty of records for all the wrong reasons. Five managers took up residence in the hot-seat:
Tom Loizou (sacked in November), Paul McGiven (resigned in December), Justin Moseley (caretaker), Martin Grainger
(resigned after 1 game in charge) and finally Gordon Boateng. Months of turmoil saw most of the senior players leave for
pastures greener.
Relegation was all but assured by the time Boateng took charge of the team and the inevitable became a certainty at
Easter when a 2-1 defeat at Banbury Utd sealed our fate. There was some cheer for Ambers fans when we beat local
rivals Ware in the Herts Charity Cup Final by a Liam Farrell goal to put some silverware in the cabinet and give the club
some hope for the future.
Cheshunt were placed in the Ryman Division 1 North for the 2008/09 season, finishing 14th and narrowly losing to
Stevenage Borough in the Herts Senior Cup Final. The 2009/10 season saw a new squad, a new management team of
Bob Dearie and Barry Green, and a more stable, supportive environment.
2010s – A Bright Future.
In 2011 Cheshunt Sports & Leisure Ltd took over the Club with Dean Williamson installed as Chairman. Ensuring stability
was the first priority along with investment in the facilities to build a solid foundation from which the club could grow. In
2013, the club were granted planning permission to overhaul 16 acres of land to provide high quality playing surfaces,
install a sustainable irrigation system and a full size floodlit artificial pitch. The permission gained national coverage in the
BBC2 documentary “Permission Impossible”. The following year, Dean Williamson secured £150,000 of funding from the
Football Stadium Improvement fund to extensively refurbish the club’s stadium.
In 2015, he secured a further £300,000 of Sport England funding to install the new 3G floodlit artificial pitch. The stadium
and adjoining 3G pitch were completed in 2015, and the youth section now have a selection of eleven, nine and six/seven
a side pitches with new drainage, a reservoir to collect water and a pump to maintain the surfaces. 2011 to 2018 saw the
Ambers work with a succession of managers with varying degrees of success, but only the Herts FA Charity Cup to show,
despite some promising periods there was a missing link the Committee sought to resolve.
In 2018 Craig Edwards joined the Ambers just in time to steer them clear of a relegation battle, promising promotion the
following season. 2018/19 saw Edwards work with existing players and recruit skilfully in the newly formed Isthmian South
Central division. A late run of ten wins and two draws from the last dozen games saw Cheshunt make third place and the
play offs. Wins against Marlow at home 2-1 and relieving Bracknell Town of their two year old unbeaten home record 3-0 in
the final saw Cheshunt back at Premier League level for season 2019/20. Off the pitch the club remain optimistic plans
submitted to further develop the Theobalds Lane ground will progress, to provide the club with a stable financial future and
the community a first class sporting environment.

13Cheshunt FC First Team Craig Edwards: Manager – A former professional boxer, Craig has managed multiple teams at steps 2, 3 and 4. He joined Cheshunt at the end season 17/18 in time to steer them clear of trouble, and set promotion as his target for 18/19 and met it with a fine unbeaten run at the business end of the season culminating in a ply off final win. Former clubs include Barkingside, Barking, Southend Utd Youth, Grays Athletic, Redbridge, Chelmsford City, Dulwich Hamlet, Billericay and Kingstonian. Craig was inducted into the Isthmian League Radio Show Hall of Fame in 2017. Peter Russell: Goalkeeping Coach – Peter has been overseeing the goalkeeping activities at Cheshunt for 6 years and has a wealth of knowledge at non league level and contacts at high levels in the professional game to consult for the latest tools and techniques employed in the higher leagues. Ricky Sappleton: Coach – Jamaican born Ricky ‘Sapps’ Sappleton is still registered as a player but is currently engaged at Cheshunt passing on his experience in a coaching capacity. He first emerged from the QPR academy, having trials at Liverpool before joining Leicester City, catching the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson at one time. A striker who can also slot in at the back, his quick feet and vision will often light up a match. Sapps joined Cheshunt with manager Craig Edwards. Mark Hughes: Player /Coach – Northern Ireland International and product of Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, Mark played professionally for Northampton Town, Chester, Stevenage, Oldham & Barnet, famous for scoring the goal that kept Barnet in the football league on the last day of season 2011/12. He joined from Bishop Stortford at the start of 2018/19 season, and captained the Ambers to promotion. He continues to add his experience on the pitch as a player, whilst taking charge of 1st team coaching sessions in the week. Harry Girling – Goalkeeper – 21 year old goalkeeper picked up from Millwall FC, Girling has caught the eye with some spectacular saves in the three seasons he has been with Cheshunt, he has had plenty of competition for the keeper’s position between the sticks, thrived on the challenge and come out on top each time, look out for his distribution setting the Ambers onto the front foot & his ability to launch a dead ball kick into the final third. Ibs Diallo – Defender – Joined the Ambers at the start of this season having previously played at Burgess Hill, Billericay, & Wealdstone. A product of the Parisian Banlieue, Bondy, famous for producing footballers, Ibs plays a rightback/ wingback role but can switch as cover as required. He requires no invite to venture forward and has contributed important goals drifting into the box to place low drives into the far corner. Jamie Reynolds – Defender – Joined the Ambers recently, Jamie is another product Tottenham Hotspur Academy, a left back/wing back, noted as a tidy player who rarely wastes a pass. Joe Re – Midfield – A Hertfordshire player who made it through the youth set ups locally to secure a place in the Nottingham Forest Academy. Joe joined Cheshunt in 2018 and was a regular starter in the promotion winning team last season, Joe keeps the ball moving with his passing and will always look for a shooting opportunity when in range. Taylor McKenzie – Defender – Has played professionally for Notts County, after a youth career with Spurs , Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday, Taylor has played at this level for Chesham Utd and was signed from Enfield Town. Ola Williams – Defender – Ola was signed at the beginning of this season from league rivals Wingate & Finchley, a versatile player who can play on both sides of the pitch and at full back or further forward as a wide midfield.Ola has a wide experience at step 3 having played at Bromley & Harrow Boro previously. 12
Mo Camara – Utility – Mo is the big guy the opposition appear to bounce off with alarming regularity. He is equally at
home at Centre Half or Centre Mid, and can contribute goals regularly winning headers with late runs. Mo is another
Parisian, starting his career in Les Pavillions – sous-Bois, in the Ile de France region near to Ibs.
Ash Nzala – Forward – Signed as a striker to compete with Jason Hallett in 2018, Ash showed a lot of promise and
contributed some important goals towards the end of last season. Ash has been desperately unlucky this season,
breaking his ankle in the last pre season warm up game, back doing some light running now, we look forward to seeing
him back competing for a starting place late in the season.
Fabion Simms – Midfield – A Harlow Town favourite signed at the beginning of 2019/20 season, Fabz is another injury
casualty, starting just three games before rupturing an Achilles tendon. He has played for Potters Bar & Wingate Finchley
and was forming a promising partnership with Mo Camara before his season was cut short, currently doing some light
training with a view to making a start before the season closes.
Tanasheh Abrahams – 25 year left sided player with plenty of Isthmian Premier experience with Dulwich Hamlet, Staines,
Wingate Finchley, and has also played abroad with Ferroviarro and Mamelodi Sundowns on loan from Barnet.
Ryan Moss – Striker – An experienced striker starting to find the net regularly as he settles into the side, having joined in
November 19. Experience has taken Ryan to multiple clubs including Dorchester, Bashley, AFC Totton Havant &
Waterlooville, Kingstonian, Margate, Dulwich Hamlet. Hampton & Richmond, and Harrow Borough.
Norman Wabo – Norman joined Southend United at the age of 15, after being scouted playing in an Essex county game
and signed his first professional deal with Southend, he has since played at League 2, Conference and Isthmian Premier
levels, and scored on his debut v Barking recently. Norman is on loan to Cheshunt from Dartford.
Sean Cronin – Defender – Sean is another signing from Wingate & Finchley, who has also played at Grays Athletic &
Wealdstone. Welsh born & not afraid to tell you, having started at Cardiff City, and has also played in the Welsh Premier
league for Neath FC, Sean also has international credentials having played for Wales at under 18, 19 and 23 level. He is
a lifelong Swansea City fan.
Ethan Nelson Roberts – Midfield – Another AFC Wimbledon Youth player, captain of the academy, Ethan is energetic and
combative in midfield, He joined during 2019/20 season. He made one appearance for Wimbledon in the EFL trophy,
before seeking first team football elsewhere.
Zack Newton – Forward – Zack has experience at this level having represented both Welling & Worthing, Cheshunt
signed Zack from Horsham this season. Strong on the ball with a low centre of gravity, once in possession he is difficult
to move off the ball , and can open up defences with his fast feet. He also contributes goals cutting inside and is another
prepared to shoot on sight.
Amadou Kassarate – Midfield A – Senegal u20 International, Amadou has played professional football in
Scotland (Dumbarton & Stanraer) & Greece (Thesprotos, winning the Greek play offs) and has a wealth of experience.
This is his second spell at Cheshunt having made appearances at the end of the 17/18 season helping the club ease
clear of relegation concerns.
Shane Cojacarel – Forward – A youth player at QPR & Barnet, moving into the professional ranks while at Barnet, Shane
has played for multiple teams at this level and was instrumental in the Ambers winning the play off in season 18/19 with
two goals in the final, having averaged a goal a game in the run up to the final. Looking to force his way back into
contention after picking up an injury at Bognor Regis when he was targeted and taken out of the game.
Reece Beckles Richards – Striker – A former Cheshunt youth player (aged 8) When Paolo Fletcher first spotted him
playing up 2 age groups. Reece is an international having represented Antigua & Barbuda , and is on loan from
Wealdstone FC until February. Reece had clocked up over 100 appearances for Wingate & Finchley before his transfer to
Wealdstone.
Tommie Hession Harris – Midfield – Signed from Tonbridge Angels this season, Tommie has added an extra level of
energy to central midfield and is the chief spoiler, breaking up opposition build ups before they get to the final
third. Tommie learnt his trade via the Spurs and Southend academies, before travelling to California to study and play on
the US West Coast.
Khalifa Jabbie – Midfield – A Sierra Leone international, made his full international debut for Sierra Leone on March 27,
2011, against Niger in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match. He has played at pro level in Sweden, Turkey
and Sierra Leone, joining Cheshunt in November 2019.

The Gate remain unbeaten in first 4 league games as a goalless draw in Surrey secures our 6th point of the
season.
After a spell of miserable autumn weather, the pitch at Fetcham Grove looked in great nick as the players
completed their pre-match warm-ups and got ready to fight for the points in the Pitching-In Isthmian
Premier League.
The opening exchanges were scrappy with little chances of note for either side until in the 17th minute John
Ufuah was put through on goal by Conor Evans and upended in the box but the referee waved way the
penalty appeal from a number of Gate players!
Richards (23’) and Leslie (30’) exchanged shots that were both comfortably saved by the keepers before
Bancroft troubled Oualah with a rasping shot in the 35th minute but the tanners goalie kept the ball out with
another smart save. There was little else to report on in the next 15 minutes and the half ended with the
sides all square at 0-0.
Leatherhead started the second half the brighter and on the front foot they created several half chances;
Hester Cook came the closest dragging his
effort wide in the 57th minute. The Gate’s
best chance of the half fell to Conor Evans
(66’) who found himself though on goal but
with only the keeper to beat he pushed his
shot wide of the goal.
There was an injury to Chris Sessegnon in
the 74th minute and he was replaced by
Luke Carey. Noel Leighton (81’) also came
on, replacing Toby Bancroft, for his first
competitive minutes after returning from
injury but he was unable to force a
breakthrough in the closing ten minutes.
In a frantic last 3 minutes Carey and Evans
had fierce shots cleared and blocked away
from goal and Ben Swift went close with a
header but all were thwarted and the points
were shared as the referee blew his whistle
with the final score 0-0.

IT’S DIFFICULT to know what to write about sometimes in these programme columns we send out each week.
Do people want to hear views on the big issues around the game? Are you flicking through a programme for
some light-hearted reading at half-time?
It feels like everything has been a bit serious recently. And rightfully so. Clubs up and down are worried about
the future. What makes it harder, in this COVID pandemic, is a lot of the things we are worrying about when it
comes to Non-League football are largely out of everyone’s control.
While clubs can put the right protocols in place, if the government suddenly decide no fans then there’s not much
that can be done about it.
It’s a frustrating time for all, perhaps summed up by the situation this weekend in the FA Cup where Step 2 fans
aren’t allowed to watch their team play live, be it home or away.
At the time of writing, there is still great uncertainty for National League clubs about their kick-off. They will be
behind closed doors but with almost no exceptions, that will only work if there is sufficient support from the
Government or the Premier League.
All we really want is to watch our teams play again. That goes for every club throughout the pyramid. Those who
already have fans in want to make sure the gates stay open.
Perhaps this tricky period reminds us why we started watching Non-League football in the first place.
The thought sprung to mind from last week’s NLP where our new columnist Tony Incenzo – talkSPORT’s
journalist and Non-League expert – about the importance of getting young fans through the doors.
Tony recounts how his mum used to drop him and a friend at the gates of Hendon and would return at 4.45pm to
pick them up knowing they will have had an enjoyable, and safe, afternoon watching their local side.
From their Tony’s passion for these levels of the game soared and, anyone who follows him on twitter, will know
just how many grounds he has visited over the years.
It got me to thinking about my own involvement in the game. My Dad is the on to blame, Heavily involved in
Non-League football, I probably had no choice.
But I loved going down to a ground, smelling the liniment waft from the changing rooms before standing so close
to the action soaking it all in. I enjoyed watching Premier League football, like any other kid, but really
Non-League was the place to be.
That then morphed into regularly watching Farnborough Town with friends before, in our teenage years, that
transformed into away games as well.
We’d hop on the train early in the morning and headed off to far flung destinations like Hitchin, Carshalton and
St Albans.
It’s only a few years later when you start driving that you realise these places are not that far away at all.
But that was our Saturdays. Stopping at McDonalds on the way to the ground. Stopping there again on the way
back to the station. Navigating our way through Clapham Junction and eventually arriving back home tired but
fulfilled.
That’s what COVID has shown me, anyway. How much I enjoy being at a game with other people and soaking it
all in. How I enjoy going to a game with my Dad, who kick-started my love affair with Non-League in the first
place. And, with that, I’m off tonight to see a game with him.
