WELCOME
Dear researcher,
Welcome to GKA VISUAL 2019 (the 5th International Congress of Visual
Culture) at Inter American University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Congress is a forum of academics focused on the crucial challenges
audiovisual communication, the world of image and cultural and crea-
tive industries are facing nowadays, bringing together local and global
perspectives. This event contributes to the exchange of ideas and good
practices by promoting disciplinary, national, cultural, ethnic, and linguis-
tic diversity. The International Congress of Visual Culture is itinerant and
is held annually in universities of the main cities all over the world. In the
last years, the congress has been held at Freie Universität Berlin (Berlin,
Germany), in 2014; at University of California in Berkeley (Berkeley, USA),
in 2015, at Universitat Abat Oliba CEU (Barcelona, Spain), in 2017, and
at Pontificia Università della Santa Croce (Roma, Italy) in 2018.
Besides the organization of the International Congress of Visual Cultu-
re, we also publish congress attendees’ selected papers in http://journals.
epistemopolis.org/, and that is why we encourage all participants to sub-
mit a paper based on their presentation so it can be peer reviewed and, in
case of being accepted, it will be published in the corresponding journal.
We also organize congresses and publish journals in other areas of main
knowledge to the intellectual sphere, such as Social sciences, Technology,
Human Sciences, and Education, to name but a few. Our goal is to create
new ways of interaction between these communities of knowledge where
researchers can meet face to face and, later on, stay virtually in touch ma-
king the most out of the digital media access. We are also committed to
creating a more inclusive, open, and reliable review process.
We want to thank the rector and the rest of the academic authorities
at Inter American University of Puerto Rico for giving us access to the
university facilities and all their help to make this congress an oppor-
tunity to boost the values of investigation, cooperation, and knowledge
dissemination.
We also thank everyone who has worked in the organization of Con-
gress on Visual Culture, especially to Sandra Fernández, Marcos Gonzá-
lez, Raquel Jiménez, Breixo Lousada, Larissa Nogueira, Ana Quintana,
Rosario Sáez, Laura Sousa, as well as the rest of the administration and

INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
This community of knowledge gathers around a common interest to discuss
the role played by visual culture in today´s society. The community inte-
racts through an innovative congress, which gives its members the oppor-
tunity to meet face to face on a yearly basis, or to communicate virtually
through the journals, videos, and news that we make available thanks to
the possibilities offered nowadays by the digital media. This community of
knowledge consists of academics, educators, political authorities, public
administrators, researchers, and other professionals in the cultural and
artistic field.

THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL COLLECTION
The International Visual Culture Review raises questions about the nature
of image and the purpose of the creation of images. This interdisciplinary
and transdisciplinary journal brings together the perspectives of resear-
chers, theorists, professionals, and professors from different fields, such
as architecture, art, cognitive science, telecommunications, information te-
chnology, cultural studies, design, education, film studies, history, linguis-
tics, management, marketing, commercialization and distribution, media,
museography, philosophy, semiotics, photography, psychology, religious
studies, etc.
The journal publishes papers written in an accurate academic format,
from both theoretical and practical points of view, with a prescriptive and
descriptive approach, including texts of evaluative practices and the after-
math of those practices. We welcome, particularly, papers that present the
state of the art of this specialization as well as papers that propose metho-
dological prescriptions. The journal is peer reviewed and accepts papers
written in English.
The journal is issued once a year. However, to give an easier access
to the content, papers are constantly published online on our platform:

Here you will find step-by-step instruc- tions to submit your paper: 1. SUBMIT YOUR PAPER. Choose the journal you want to submit to. The software platform (OJS) will prompt you for some details, and then you will be able to submit your paper. 2. VALIDATION. Once your paper has been received, the Editorial Board will have to assess the content and check that it meets the publishing guidelines. Remember that the article must be sent in an editable format; hence pdf format is not accepted. 3. SUBMISSION TO REFEREES. Once validated in the initial selection, your paper will be sent to two referees. Should a discrepancy occur, we may request the assistance of a third referee. You will be informed of the evaluation result by email. 4. PEER-REVIEW OUTCOME. Your paper may be accepted, rejected, or you may be asked to make some changes to improve it and resubmit it. Evaluation reports will be available for you in the platform. However, the identity of the referees will not be disclosed. 5. PROOFREADING OF ORIGINALS. The layout phase begins once the fee has been paid. The editorial team will search for possible errors and will ask you to review them. After this step, no further text will be added. 6. PAPER LAYOUT. We will proceed to format your paper and send it for your final approval before publication. We may highlight in yellow some parts of the text that will need special attention on your part. 7. FINAL PROOFREADING. You will be asked to review the pdf file in order to check that no mistake has been made during the layout process. We kindly ask you to check thoroughly since this last version will be the one published in the journal. 16

8. ONLINE PUBLICATION.
Once the proofreading is finished, we will page and index it in order to
publish it in the online journal.
JOURNAL SUBSCRIPTION
There are two kinds of subscriptions: Individual or institutional. You can
find more information in our website: http://onvisualculture.com/jour-
nals/subscription/
OPEN ACCESS
Our journals offer the authors a delayed open access. Two years after the
publication the articles will be available in the different journals websites,
but the journals will keep the copyright of the papers. Any person or institu-
tion that wants to upload or use any article on their website or institutional
repository must contact us first.
However, in order to foster the free flow of knowledge and help authors
spread their ideas, we offer them the possibility of releasing their paper
under a Creative Commons open license. This will allow them to circulate
the article wherever they wish (personal website, institutional repository,
etc.) after paying an $85 fee. We will be glad to provide free advice to help
authors choose the license that suits their case best.

CONGRESS VENUE
The Inter American University of Puerto Rico is a private, non-profit institution
of higher education. For over 100 years, it has been dedicated to preparing
students in all branches of humanistic, social and scientific work; And has
served as a cultural bridge between North America and Latin America. The
University offers academic programs in its eleven teaching units, namely: the
precincts of Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barranquitas, Bayamón, Fajardo, Guayama,
Metropolitano, Ponce and San Germán; And its two professional schools, the
School of Optometry and the Faculty of Law. Currently, the UIPR maintains
an enrollment of over 40,000 students, representing 21% of the university
student population and 35% of students enrolled in private institutions in
Puerto Rico.

HIGHLIGHTED THEMES
LATIN AMERICA FROM THE IMAGE:
THE HISTORICAL NARRATIVE AND VISUAL CULTURE
Although in historical narration it is very easy to recognize the use of the
written document, with the purpose of reconstructing the past, there are
efforts aimed at experimenting with visual resources. There has been an
interest in analyzing these sources as productions elaborated and dissemi-
nated with intentionality, in certain periods and spaces. Studies on visual
culture, by the way, have provided theoretical and methodological basis, to
experiment with material artifacts with symbolic, aesthetic, political-ideolo-
gical, ritualistic purposes, which seek, precisely, to attract the gaze. Without
being limited to them, this is why research on cartography, photography,
film, television, cyberspace, surrealist and conceptual art and architecture,
among others, takes priority.
In this way, this congress proposes a dialogue between history and visual
culture, in order to reflect “visually” issues applicable to that great reality
called Latin America, such as political propaganda, the configuration of
collective memories, the construction of the nation, the articulation of iden-
tities and subjectivities, among others, using the principle of scrutinizing
the image from production to reception and consumption. This effort will
have three central goals:
1. reflect on the possibilities of the image to give visibility both to the
generalities and to the particular aspects of human actions
2. provide disciplinary insights that are not restricted to the interpreta-
tion of the historian and
3. demonstrate the relationship between the historical relevance of the
image, the pertinence of visual culture and the revisionist nature of
historical studies.

Prof. Rafael L Cabrera Collazo, PhD

When tourism becomes a videographic:
visual representations of contemporary
Puerto Rican marginality
Rafael L. Cabrera Collazo has a PhD in History from the University of
Puerto Rico, in Río Piedras. He has realized postdoctoral studies in the
universities of Oxford, in England, and in Bologna, in Italy. Currently, he is
in charge of the position of Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at
the Inter American University of Puerto Rico and holds the rank of Profes-
sor of History at the same institution. Cabrera is dedicated to work about
visual semiology and the effect of the mass media on daily life. It also re-
searches aspects related to social and economic history at the conjuncture
of the Spanish-American War, especially in the areas of microhistory and
regional history. His research work has been published inside and outside
of Puerto Rico, standing out his book Los dibujos del progreso: el mundo
caricaturesco de Filardi y la crítica al desarrollismo muñocista, 1950-1960
(The drawings of progress: the caricature world of Filardi and the critique
of muñocista developmentalism, 1950-1960). He has published several
essays about culture of music video in the 1980s. He has given lectu-
res and has offered seminars about visual image studies in universities
in Mexico, Spain and Colombia, highlighting the National Autonomous
University of Mexico, Complutense University of Madrid and the University
of Antioquia in Medellín, Colombia.

Sight and contemporary visual culture:
the experience beyond the eyes
Aileen Estrada Fernández is a Professor at the Ferré Rangel School of
Communication at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, where she
has also served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, Director of the
Academic Research Center (from where she headed the Institute for the
Study of Violence in the Media and a Critical Media Reading Program)
and Director of the former Communication Department. Teaches research
methods and communication theories. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy
in Communication from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and
her master’s degree from the School of Public Communication of the Uni-
versity of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras, where she has been recognized as a
former Distinguished student. His bachelor’s degree in Psychology is from
the Faculty of Social Sciences also from the UPR-Río Piedras. She has been
a Scholar-in Residence at the New York University and the Communication
Department of the University of New Hampshire in Durham, and has been
a guest speaker at the Menéndez Pelayo International University and the
Queen Sofia Center for the Study of Violence, both in Valencia, Spain. She
has published two books on violence in the media and critical reading of
media and published in local and international magazines.

From the Pre-Hispanic to the Nationalist
Vanguards of the 20th Century in the
Visual Texts of Latin America: Identities
of Singularity and Diversity
Gustavo Norberto Duperré graduated in Arts and History Management
from the University of El Salvador in Argentina, degree accredited by the
Universidad Complutense of Madrid, Spain. He also holds a teacher tra-
ining degree in Geography oriented to Social Sciences and for fourteen
years he has been working as Head Instructor at the General Management
of Culture and Education in the jurisdiction of Buenos Aires. He is a can-
didate for the UNESCO Chairs Programme on Cultural Tourism UNTREF/
AAMNBA and Heritage and Sustainable Tourism: International Postgra-
duate Degree from the National University of Tres de Febrero and the Fine
Arts Museum Friends Association, Argentina. He has worked in different
activities in the field of culture: in research, as a curator, and also in ma-
nagement. He has contributed with various international congresses in
Madrid, Roma, Paris, Ottawa and Cuba. Among his lines of research the
following are to be highlighted: digital workflows for Heritage conserva-
tion, public image of the museum and its social projection, Jules Verne
literature, and links between environmental sciences and contemporary
art, some of which topics have been published in the following websites:
Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the National Archaeolo-
gical Museum of Spain, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and
the Jules Verne Hispanic Society.

Prof. Ana Sánchez-Muñoz, PhD

inclusion in Hollywood stays at the surface.
Dr. Sánchez-Muñoz has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Sou-
thern California, Los Angeles, and a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics form the
University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Currently, Dr. Sánchez-Mu-
ñoz is a Full Professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies at California
State University, Northridge (Los Angeles, California), and recently served
as Chair of the Linguistics Department. She regularly teaches Language
and Linguistics courses including Ethnolinguistics, Language and Gender,
Language Acquisition and Language Development in ethnic and minority
students. Sánchez-Muñoz’ research examines issues related to language in
U.S. Latina/o communities, such bilingualism and multilingualism, langua-

YOUNG RESEARCHERS SCHOLARSHIP
On each congress, we offer a number of Scholarships for Young Resear-
chers that are granted to outstanding doctoral students who have an active
interest in the academic area of the congress. These doctoral students play a
critical role in congress, attending the parallel sessions, providing technical
assistance in the sessions, participating in informal sessions and the pre-
sentation of their own research. The grant, together with its responsibilities,
offers a professional development opportunity for the students, at this stage
of their academic careers. Meet with experts in the field, interact with co-
lleagues from other parts of the world, create contacts and friendships with
other participants, are some of the additional benefits of this scholarship.

Estimado/a investigador/a:
Bienvenido al GKA VISUAL 2019 (V Congreso Internacional de Cultura
Visual) en la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, San Juan,
Puerto Rico.
El Congreso es un foro de académicos orientado a los desafíos cruciales
a los que se enfrentan la comunicación audiovisual, el mundo de la ima-
gen y las industrias culturales y creativas en el panorama actual, aunando
las perspectivas locales y globales. Se trata de un evento que contribuye
al intercambio de ideas y de buenas prácticas mediante el fomento de la
diversidad disciplinar, nacional, cultural, étnica y lingüística. El Congreso
Internacional de Cultura Visual es itinerante y se celebra anualmente en
universidades de las principales ciudades del mundo, en los cinco conti-
nentes. En los últimos años el congreso se ha celebrado en la Freie Uni-
versität Berlin (Berlín, Alemania), en 2014; en la University of California
en Berkeley (Berkeley, EE.UU.), en 2015, en la Uiversitat Abat Oliba CEU
(Barcelona, España), en 2017 y en la Pontificia Università della Santa Cro-
ce, Roma, Italia, en 2018.
Además de la organización del Congreso Internacional de Cultura Vi-
sual, publicamos artículos seleccionados de los asistentes al congreso
en http://journals.epistemopolis.org/, por lo que animamos a todos los
participantes del congreso a presentar un artículo con base en su pre-
sentación para que sea revisado por pares y, en caso de ser aceptado,
se publique en las revistas asociadas.
También organizamos congresos y publicamos revistas en otras áreas
de conocimiento de interés para la esfera intelectual humana, como las
ciencias sociales, la tecnología, las ciencias humanas y la educación,
por nombrar solo unos pocos. Nuestro objetivo es crear nuevas formas
de interacción en estas comunidades de conocimiento, donde los in-
vestigadores pueden reunirse presencialmente y también permanecer
conectados virtualmente, aprovechando al máximo el acceso a través de
medios digitales. También estamos comprometidos en crear un proceso
de revisión más inclusivo, abierto y fiable.
Deseamos agradecer al rector y al resto de autoridades académicas
de la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico la cesión de las instala-
ciones y la colaboración prestada para facilitar y estimular al máximo

Esta comunidad de conocimiento se reúne en torno a un interés común
para debatir el papel que juega la cultura visual en la sociedad. La co-
munidad interactúa a través de un congreso innovador, reuniéndose sus
miembros presencialmente una vez al año, o bien comunicándose virtual-
mente a través de revistas, vídeos y noticias, que ponemos a su alcance

REVISTA INTERNACIONAL
La Revista Internacional de Cultura Visual se plantea preguntas sobre la
naturaleza de la imagen y sobre las funciones de creación de imágenes.
Esta revista interdisciplinar y transdisciplinar pone en común las perspecti-
vas de investigadores, teóricos, profesionales y profesores provenientes de
diferentes campos, tales como la arquitectura, el arte, la ciencia cognitiva,
las telecomunicaciones, la informática, los estudios culturales, el diseño,
la educación, los estudios de cine, la historia, la lingüística, la gestión, el
marketing, la comercialización y distribución, los medios de comunica-
ción, la museografía, la filosofía, la semiótica, la fotografía, la psicología,
los estudios religiosos, etc.
La revista publica artículos redactados en riguroso formato académico,
textos de orientación tanto teórica como práctica, con una aproximación
prescriptiva y descriptiva, incluyendo las narrativas de prácticas evaluati-
vas y los efectos de dichas prácticas. Son especialmente bienvenidos los
artículos que presenten el estado del arte de esta especialidad, así como
los textos que propongan prescripciones metodológicas.
La Revista Internacional de Cultura Visual es revisada por expertos y res-
paldada por un proceso de publicación basado en el rigor y en criterios
de calidad académica, asegurando así que solo los trabajos intelectuales
significativos sean publicados. El sistema de arbitraje recurre a evalua-
dores externos a esta editorial. Solo se aceptan para publicación textos
originales.
Las revistas tienen una frecuencia de publicación semestral, es decir,
publicamos dos números por volumen. Sin embargo, para facilitar la difu-
sión de los contenidos, los artículos son publicados online continuamente
en nuestra plataforma: http://journals.epistemopolis.org/.

A continuación, en- contrará las instrucciones paso a paso sobre el proceso de envío. 1. ENVÍE SU ARTÍCULO. Elija la revista en la que desea publicar su artículo. La plataforma informá- tica OJS le solicitará algunos de sus datos y posteriormente podrá realizar el envío de su artículo. 2. VALIDACIÓN. Tras recibir su artículo, el Consejo Editorial deberá validar el contenido y comprobar que se han seguido las directrices de publicación. Recuerde que debe enviar su artículo en un formato editable, es decir, no se acepta en pdf. 3. ENVÍO A EVALUADORES. Una vez validado en la selección preliminar, su artículo será enviado a dos revisores. En caso de discrepancia podrá ser solicitada la intervención de un tercer revisor. Recibirá un email informándole del resultado de la evaluación. 4. RESULTADO DE LA EVALUACIÓN. Su artículo podrá ser aceptado, rechazado, o podría solicitarse un reenvío con mejoras. Podrá tener acceso a los informes de evaluación en la plataforma informática. Sin embargo, la identidad de los evaluadores no será revelada. 5. PAGO DE LOS GASTOS DE GESTIÓN. La gestión de la evaluación por pares es gratuita si el artículo es rechaza- do. Si el artículo es aceptado, el coste de publicación asciende a 125 USD. 6. CORRECCIÓN DE ORIGINALES. Una vez abonada la cuota, comienza la fase de maquetación. El equipo editorial revisará posibles erratas y le solicitará que revise los párrafos afectados. A partir de este punto, no se podrán realizar añadidos al texto entregado. 7. MAQUETACIÓN DEL ARTÍCULO. Su artículo será maquetado y las pruebas se le enviarán para la aproba- ción final antes de su publicación. En esta fase, es posible que resaltemos en color amarillo algún extracto del texto consideramos que debe prestar especial atención. 48

8. CORRECCIÓN DE PRUEBAS.
Se le solicitará que revise el pdf para comprobar que no se ha producido
ningún error en el proceso de maquetación. Le rogamos que realice una
comprobación minuciosa y completa puesto que esta será la versión que
aparecerá publicada en la revista.
9. PUBLICACIÓN DEL ARTÍCULO ONLINE.
Finalizada la corrección de pruebas, el artículo está casi listo para ser
publicado. Solo falta paginarlo e indexarlo. Realizadas ambas tareas, el
artículo será publicado en la web de la revista correspondiente.

Nuestras revistas ofrecen un modelo de acceso abierto diferido a los auto-
res de los artículos. Transcurridos 2 años desde su publicación, los artícu-

pero las revistas mantendrán el copyright de la obra. Cualquier persona
o institución que desee subir o hacer circular libremente la versión del
editor del artículo en su página web o en un repositorio institucional debe
ponerse en contacto con nosotros.
Sin embargo, con el fin de facilitar el libre flujo de conocimiento y ayu-
dar a los autores a difundir sus ideas, nos complace ofrecer a los autores
la posibilidad de que asignen una licencia abierta Creative Commons a

COLECCIÓN DE LIBROS
Los libros de la comunidad de Cultura Visual abarcan temáticas muy di-
versas: desde las más generales como la semiótica, la historia del arte, los
medios de comunicación y las políticas culturales; hasta temas relaciona-
dos directamente con el Aprendizaje visual, la propiedad intelectual, las
nuevas tecnologías y la innovación.
Los libros son coordinados por un editor invitado o coordinador. Esta
figura, un miembro de la comunidad académica que ha destacado en su
colaboración con nuestra editorial, revisará que los textos que nos envíen
se adaptan a las directrices, decidirá si son aptos para publicarse y los
aglutinará en un libro de acuerdo con una selección temática específica
elegida por el propio editor (temática revisada por el comité científico) y
adecuada a temas de especial interés dentro de la comunidad. Los parti-
cipantes en los congresos tienen derecho a enviar sus textos de forma gra-
tuita, pero no es necesario haber participado en el congreso para poder
publicar en nuestros libros. Las personas que no vayan a participar en los
congresos también pueden enviar sus textos.
Los contenidos de los libros estarán disponibles en acceso abierto desde
el momento de su publicación, es decir, estarán disponibles para descarga
y lectura online gratuita. Les asignaremos la licencia Creative Commons CC
BY-NC-ND, que permite compartir el libro siempre que se indique la fuente
original y no se hagan derivados ni se haga un uso comercial del mismo. El
autor también tendrá derecho a recibir su artículo aislado para facilitar su

SEDE DEL CONGRESO
La Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico es una institución privada de
educación superior, sin fines de lucro. Por más de 100 años, se ha dedicado
a preparar estudiantes en todas las ramas del quehacer humanístico, social
y científico; y ha servido como puente cultural entre Norteamérica e Hispa-
noamérica. La Universidad ofrece programas académicos en sus once unida-
des docentes, a saber: los recintos de Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barranquitas, Ba-
yamón, Fajardo, Guayama, Metropolitano, Ponce y San Germán; y sus dos
escuelas profesionales, la Escuela de Optometría y la Facultad de Derecho.
Actualmente, la UIPR mantiene una matrícula de sobre 40,000 estudiantes, lo
cual representa el 21% de la población estudiantil universitaria y el 35% de los
estudiantes matriculados en instituciones privadas en Puerto Rico.
