Starting scholarships for international doctoral
candidates
The Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE) awards 20 starting scholarships for
international doctoral candidates at Goethe University. The scholarships are funded by the Franz Adickes
Stiftungsfonds. They are open for international doctoral candidates right at the start and in the early phase
of their doctoral project at the university.
International doctoral candidates face special challenges at the start of their doctorate in Frankfurt, namely
considerable costs for mobility, furnishing an apartment, fees at public authorities etc. The scholarships are
intended to facilitate the start of the doctoral project and to provide funding for the first few months in
Frankfurt. The scholarship amounts to 1000,- € per month for a period of three months. Only persons with
an international background in the first 12 months of their doctoral project can apply. Grantees of a
starting scholarship cannot have a full-time or substantial employment – at Goethe University or with
another employer – during the period of the scholarship.1
Applications are possible until March 31, 2021 by submission of the following documents:
• Completed application form (German Version / English Version)
• CV and a copy of the last academic degree (with grades)
• Documents on your doctoral project at Goethe University:
o either faculty letter of admission as doctoral candidate at Goethe University Frankfurt
o or specific declaration by supervisor that she / he will supervise your doctoral project
• Short proposal of your doctoral project (two DIN A4 pages maximum)
• Preliminary funding plan for the entire doctoral project

Who will decide on my application?
The applications are screened and summarized by members of the central GRADE support unit. The
GRADE Board of Directors makes the final decision based on the supplied summary material and the
original applications. The Board of Directors includes faculty members from different academic fields
and also PhD and postdoc representatives.
When will I get feedback about my application?
The deadline for submission is March 31, 2021. We will try to process the applications as quickly as
possible. The selection is made by the GRADE Board of Directors (see above). Therefore, it might take 4-
5 weeks until a final decision is reached.
What are the criteria for the evaluation? What should I emphasize in my application?
The main criteria for the evaluation are
• the scientific potential of the candidate,
• the scientific quality, feasibility and careful planning of the dissertation project and
• realistic prospects for the establishment of the doctoral project at Goethe University.
Thus, you should carefully consider the following points when preparing your application:
• Explain your potential as a promising young researcher in your CV (e.g. mention scholarships,
honors and awards, if applicable: publications and conference contributions).
• Explain your research project clearly and succinctly in the proposal (research question, scientific
methods, working plan and timetable).
• Prepare a preliminary plan for funding the whole duration of you doctoral research, together
with your supervisor (including possible financing options and a timetable for next steps to make
use of them, like applications for long-term scholarships).
If applications are comparable in terms of their academic merits, social aspects and the financial
situation can be considered as an additional selection criterion.Goethe Research Academy

Why do I have to specify my current contract situation and details about other scholarships?
To a certain extent, starting scholarships can co-exist with other types of funding. But for legal reasons,
you cannot receive a scholarship and have a full-time-employment or have a second scholarship at the
same time. Permitted forms of employment during a scholarship include:
• An employment of up to 16 hours / month with an income of no more than 6.000 € / year, if the
content and purpose of the employment are clearly different from the scholarship
• Teaching assignments at the university
• An employment as a scientific assistant at the university of no more than 42 hours / month
Detailed guidelines can be found in the „Guidelines of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main on
awarding stipends to doctoral candidates and post-doctoral candidates“. We are required to check for
and take into consideration any double financing.
What if my contract situation changes after the submission of my application?
The starting scholarships can be combined with other types of support under certain conditions. Since
we need to find a specific solution for each single case, it is important that you inform us about any
changes concerning your positions, scholarships, and contracts after your application has been
submitted. Otherwise, we cannot ensure that the starting scholarship can be disbursed.
What are the prerequisites for an application?
• Either faculty letter of admission as doctoral candidate at Goethe University Frankfurt or a specific
declaration by your supervisor that she / he will supervise your doctoral project
• Start of doctoral project within the last year counting from application deadline
• Degree qualifying you as a doctoral candidate awarded by institution outside of Germany
• No German citizenship (applications by binational candidates are possible)Goethe Research Academy

Start-Stipendien für internationale Promovierende
Die Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE) vergibt aus Mitteln des Franz Adickes
Stiftungsfonds insgesamt 20 Start-Stipendien an internationale Promovierende der Goethe-Universität
Frankfurt bzw. an Personen, die dabei sind, an der Goethe-Universität ein Promotionsprojekt zu beginnen.
Internationale Promovierende stehen beim Start in Frankfurt vor besonderen Herausforderungen und
müssen bspw. Kosten für die Einrichtung von Wohnungen, Meldebehörden, Reisen zur Wohnungssuche
etc. finanzieren. Die Stipendien sollen ihnen den Start des Promotionsprojekts erleichtern und die
Finanzierung der ersten Monate in Frankfurt ermöglichen. Das Stipendium beträgt 1000,- Euro / Monat
über einen Zeitraum von 3 Monaten. Es werden ausschließlich Bewerbungen von Personen mit
internationalem Hintergrund berücksichtigt. Bewerbungsvoraussetzungen sind ferner, dass der Zeitpunkt
des Promotionsbeginns höchstens ein Jahr zurückliegt und die Personen während des Stipendiums nicht in
erheblichem Umfang an der Goethe-Universität oder anderweitig beschäftigt sind. 2
Bewerben können Sie sich bis zum 31. März 2021 mit folgenden Unterlagen:
• Vollständig ausgefülltes Bewerbungsformular (dt. Version / engl. Version)
• Lebenslauf und das letzte akademische Zeugnis (mit Noten)
• Belege zum Promotionsprojekt an der Goethe-Universität:
o entweder Bescheid zur Annahme als Doktorand*in am Fachbereich
o oder konkrete Zusage der / des Betreuer*in zur Betreuung der Promotion
• Kurzexposee, das das Dissertationsprojekt auf maximal zwei DIN A4-Seiten vorstellt
• vorläufiger Finanzierungsplan für den gesamten Zeitraum des Promotionsprojekts

Wer wird über meine Bewerbung entscheiden?
Die Bewerbungen werden von der GRADE-Geschäftsstelle bearbeitet und zusammengefasst. Die
Entscheidung trifft der GRADE-Vorstand auf Basis der Zusammenfassung und der Original-
Bewerbungen. Der Vorstand setzt sich aus Fachbereichsmitgliedern verschiedener Fächer und auch
Vertreter*innen der Promovierenden und Postdocs zusammen.
Wann werde ich einen Bescheid bezüglich meiner Bewerbung erhalten?
Die Bewerbungsfrist endet am 31. März 2021. Wir werden die Bewerbungen so schnell wie möglich
bearbeiten. Die Auswahl wird durch den GRADE-Vorstand getroffen (siehe oben). Es könnte deshalb 4-5
Wochen dauern, bis wir eine endgültige Entscheidung mitteilen können.
Was sind die genauen Auswahlkriterien? Was sollte in meiner Bewerbung betont werden?
Die Auswahl basiert auf
• der wissenschaftlichen Exzellenz der Bewerber*innen,
• der fachlichen Qualität, praktischen Durchführbarkeit und guten Vorbereitung des
Dissertationsprojekts und
• den Aussichten für die dauerhafte Verankerung des Promotionsprojekts an der Goethe-
Universität.
Deshalb sollten Sie folgende Punkte in Ihrer Bewerbung besonders beachten:
• Stellen Sie ihre wissenschaftliche Qualifikation im Lebenslauf dar (nennen Sie bspw. Stipendien,
Auszeichnungen, ggf. Publikationen und Konferenzbeiträge).
• Erklären Sie das Dissertationsprojekt im Exposee kurz und prägnant. Erläutern Sie neben
Forschungsfrage und fachlichen Methoden auch Vorgehen und Zeitplan.
• Erarbeiten Sie in Abstimmung mit Ihrer / Ihrem Betreuer*in einen vorläufigen Plan für die
Finanzierung des gesamten Zeitraums der Promotion (Finanzierungsoptionen, Zeitplan für
Stipendienbewerbungen…).
Wenn Bewerbungen vergleichbar sind in Bezug auf die akademischen Leistungen, dann können auch
soziale Aspekte und die finanzielle Situation zusätzlich berücksichtigt werden.Goethe Research Academy

Warum muss ich Angaben zu meiner Beschäftigungssituation und sonstigen Stipendien machen?
In einem gewissen Rahmen sind die Startstipendien mit anderen Finanzierungen kombinierbar.
Allerdings können Sie aus rechtlichen Gründen nicht gleichzeitig ein Stipendium erhalten und in Vollzeit
erwerbstätig sein oder ein weiteres Stipendium beziehen. Möglich sind aber bspw.
• eine Erwerbstätigkeit von zu 16 Stunden monatlich mit einem Einkommen von bis zu 6.000 €
jährlich, die sich in Inhalt und Zweck nicht mit dem Stipendium überschneidet,
• Lehraufträge oder
• eine Tätigkeit als wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft mit Abschluss mit Arbeitszeit von nicht mehr als 42
Stunden pro Monat.
Details finden Sie in der „Richtlinie der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main zur Vergabe von
Stipendien an Doktoranden/Doktorandinnen und Postdoktoranden/ Postdoktorandinnen“.
Wir sind verpflichtet, etwaige Doppelfinanzierungen zu überprüfen und zu berücksichtigen.
Was ist, wenn meine Beschäftigungssituation sich nach dem Abschicken der Bewerbung ändert?
Die Startstipendien können u. U. mit anderen Formen der finanziellen Unterstützung kombiniert werden
(s. o.). Da für jeden Fall eine spezifische Lösung gefunden werden muss, ist es wichtig, dass Sie uns über
Änderungen der Situation informieren. Andernfalls können wir eine Auszahlung des Startstipendiums
nicht garantieren.
Was sind die Voraussetzungen für eine Bewerbung?
• Annahme zur Promotion an einem Fachbereich der Goethe-Universität oder alternative Belege für
ein Promotionsprojekt an der Goethe-Universität (Betreuungszusage)
• Beginn der Promotion liegt nicht länger als ein Jahr zurück (Stichtag: Bewerbungsschluss)
• zur Promotion qualifizierender Studienabschluss wurde im Ausland erworben (keine
Bildungsinländer)
• keine deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft (Personen mit doppelter Staatsbürgerschaft können sich
