THE PASTURE PROFIT INDEX (PPI) The PPI assigns economic values to differing grass seed varieties based on their: 1. Seasonal Dry Matter (DM) production, a. Spring DM Yield b. Summer DM Yield c. Autumn DM Yield 2. Grass Quality 3. Silage Dry Matter production 4. Varietal persistency All agronomic trial data on which these tables are based comes from official DAFM trials. GRAZING UTILISATION - THIS IS A PROVISIONAL TRAIT ON THE RECOMMENDED LIST FOR 2022 The utilisation “star” figure is not part of the PPI but it’s a visual illustration highlighting the varieties that have displayed improved ability to be grazed by dairy cows. Variety grazing assessments have been conducted at Teagasc Moorepark in plot grazing studies since 2017. Variety grazing efficiency differences are expressed as Residual Grazed Height. UTILISATION STAR FIGURE STAR RATING * ** *** **** ***** GOLD ASSURE QUALITY GRASS SEED MIXTURES FOR 2022 In 2022 we will again have a comprehensive range of mixes available. Our grazing mixes are available with: 1. 0 clover. 2. Standard clover. Enough to satisfy the new nitrates regulation. 3. High clover. Designed to achieve 20% clover in paddock. 8 POINT GUIDE TO ACHIEVING OPTIMAL RESULTS WHEN RESEEDING 01 Identify fields most in need of reseeding. Fields not reseeded in over 10 years should take priority. Take a soil sample from the ploughed seed bed for Lime, P & K 02 levels. If minimum cultivation techniques are being used the sample should be taken from the top 10 cm of soil. Contact your ASM or local Dairygold store for soil sampling prices and advice. 03 Spray off the field with a glyphosate product. Leave for two weeks before cultivating. Carry out land drainage if needed. 04 Choose the most suitable seed mixture for your silage or grazing needs. Your ASM is available to offer advice on seed mixtures. 05 Create a firm and fine seedbed whether you are ploughing or using a minimum cultivation technique and consolidate by rolling properly to improve soil seed contact. 06 Sow the seed once a suitable seedbed has been established. Lime and fertilise the field as per your soil sample recommendation. 07 Use a suitable spray after establishment to control common grassland weeds in new leys. Your local store or ASM is also available to offer you advice. 08 Graze the sward at a low cover for the first grazing. This supports tillering of the plant in order to promote establishment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLOVER ...we can avoid 69 THOUSAND Within their analysis of the abatement potential of differing agricultural measures, Teagasc calculate that if 25% of beef TONNES of CO2 farmers and 15% of dairy farms broadcast clover seeds over equivalent per year existing grass swards that we can avoid 69 thousand tonnes (2021-2030). of CO2 equivalent per year (2021-2030). DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLOVER AND PERENNIAL RYE GRASS (PRG) Clover Grass Fixes atmospheric N Yes No Temperature it starts growing 8c 5c Clover is generally better quality across the main grazing season. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CLOVER TO MY SYSTEM? 1. MULTISPECIES SWARDS A sward with more than two species can be termed a multispecies sward but the current interest is in swards with 4 or more species, and using mixtures of grasses, legumes, and herbs. The target is to pick species that complement each other; where the performance of the mixture is greater than the sum of the individual parts. SPECIES DESCRIPTION Persistence Nitrogen Drought Species Comment under grazing fixing tolerance Perennial Ryegrass Very Good No Moderate Tried and tested. High yielding, digestible and persistent under fre- quent tight grazing. Responds to good soil nutrition. Timothy Very Good No Moderate Grows well in cold soils. Persists better than PRG in waterlogged soils. Meadow Fescue Good No Good Can tolerate lower fertility soils better than PRG. White Clover Good Yes Good Persistent under tight grazing and can spread into gaps in swards. Maintains feed quality and palatability during summer and autumn. Works best with pH above 6.2 Red Clover Moderate/ Yes Good Grows more erect, with deeper tap root and can produce more nitrogen poor than white clover. Sainfoin Unproven Yes Very good Unproven in Ireland – not certain if it will tolerate the level of rainfall we offer. Contains condensed tannins which may help reduce bloat risk. Ribwort Plantain Moderate No Very good Potential to reduce nitrate leaching due to diuretic effect. Deep rooting structure. High mineral content. Chicory Poor No Very good Deep rooting. Antiparasitic properties. What are the potential benefits? THIS IS DEPENDENT ON THE SPECIES YOU INCLUDE IN THE MIX: ◆ Nitrogen fixation, due to the clover, don’t over use fertiliser as clover can get lazy when fertiliser N is applied. ◆ Reduced leaching of Nitrogen, due to the plantain. Good New Zealand research; Irish trials are ongoing. ◆ High palatability - clovers and herbs are highly palatable and high forage intakes are achieved. ◆ Higher protein silage with a red clover silage sward. ◆ Drought resistance - Plantain and Chicory have deep roots that allow greater tolerance of drought conditions. Clovers and Meadow Fescue are also better than Perennial Ryegrass in drought. ◆ Mine nutrients from depth, species like Plantain and Chicory with deep root systems will collect nutrients at depth for growth and present them to the animal in their foliage for a more balanced diet. ◆ Weed suppression - with varied species types and shapes in the sward there is more potential to outcompete weeds and not allow them to establish and thrive in the sward. What are the potential challenges? Essential for success ◆ Lack of research ◆ Good establishment of the sward ◆ Reseeding & Over-seeding costs ◆ Apply Lime as required to maintain the ◆ Weed Control soil pH at 6.2-7.0 ongoing ◆ Slower Spring Growth ◆ Soil P and K must be at Index 3 ◆ Bloat
