n December 2011, the findings of an
independent review by Mary Portas into the
future of High Streets were published. The
report included a number of recommendations,
many of which are now being taken up by the
Government and are providing the funding and
impetus needed to bring local authorities, retailers
and Town Centre users together to help improve
the nation’s High Streets.
Gosport’s High Street is no exception, and
having received a Government grant of £100,000
from the High Street Innovation Fund, to help
bring empty units back into use, the Council has
been working with local businesses and residents
to set up a Town Team to take things forward.
In June, an open meeting for all interested parties
was held at the Discovery Centre, which generated some lively debate and a range
of suggestions to help improve the Town Centre. The meeting also provided the
opportunity for nominations to be made for a ‘Town Team’. Over 20 local business
people and residents put themselves forward to work in partnership with the Council
as part of the new ‘Town Team’. The group now meet regularly to generate and
develop ideas that will not only help to increase the number of people using the High
Street, but to encourage them to stay in the Town Centre for longer. They also want
to broaden the retail mix and alternative uses, as well as increase the take-up of
empty units and improve marketing and promotion.
Further information and notes of the meetings can be found on the web at 3

and contribute your ideas, please contact us using details above.

Thirteen communal kitchens have also been provided, each fitted with hob, oven

Register now and have your saySUNDAY 15 JULY 2012 - G
n Sunday 15 July, the residents of
O Gosport showed they had
community spirit in abundance as
they turned out in their tens of thousands to
welcome the Olympic Torch, en route to the
opening of the London 2012 Olympic
Games.
Despite previous wet and very unsettled
weather, the sun finally shone clear and bright
as torchbearers carried the flame aloft through
the streets of Gosport.
Travelling along the A32 from Fareham, the
torch was met by residents from Bridgmary
and the neighbouring areas that, not only lined
the route, but in places filled the road. At
Fleetlands, the Going for Gold team had done
an excellent job of entertaining the crowds
with sing songs, free face painting and hat
making as they waited to greet the torch. The
huge crowds continued along the A32 to
Camp Road, where the flame was then
transferred to a lantern for transportation by
convoy to Privett Road.
As it pulled up near the Cocked Hat, cheers
from the waiting crowd were deafening and,
with the flame released, the torchbearer set
6 off once more along Privett Road.
Torchbearers continued their relay along
Stoke Road, Walpole Road and the High
Street, each met by huge crowds and a
tumultuous welcome.
“Wherever you looked there was just a sea
of people - five, six, seven deep in places,
literally tens of thousands,” said Ian Lycett,
Chief Executive of Gosport Borough Council.
“People not only lined the route, but filled the
roads in places; all just wanting to soak in the
atmosphere and cheer and applaud the
torchbearers on their way. Everyone involved
said what a brilliant day it had been, and how
great the crowds were, all determined to
make the most of this once in a lifetime
event.”
Those enjoying the Council organised
activities in the Timespace and Falkland
Gardens, swelled the crowds further, as they
came to see the final torchbearer make his
way to the Ferry pontoon where he was met
by the Mayor and Mayoress. To huge
applause and a flash of cameras, the flame was
again transferred to the lantern before being
loaded onto the ferry for its onward journey.
The Council would like to thank and
congratulate the people of Gosport for their
wonderful community spirit which made the
day so special.GOSPORT ’S DAY TO SHINE

estling between Lee-on-the-Solent and Gosport, you’ll find the Alver Valley, a
N two hundred hectare green space which is home to a diverse range of flora and
fauna.
The area is carefully managed by Gosport Borough Council’s Countryside Section, who
together with a lot of dedicated conservation volunteers, work tirelessly to maintain the
area.
Coppicing, scrub clearing and tree felling are carried out to open up glades and allow
sunlight in so that flowers, butterflies, reptiles and other small animals can flourish. Hedge
planting is also carried out to provide food and shelter for a range of species and, a large
area of reed bed is cut and removed annually to ensure a fresh growth is ready for nesting
birds come the summer.
Over recent years, pathways have been laid, and bridges and viewpoints built, making
access to some areas far easier. This has encouraged more people to use the park and
now they can often be seen walking their dogs, jogging, exploring or picnicking with their
children. Meanwhile groups of ornithologists and entomologists often visit from
further afield for the diverse range of birds and insects found living there. As well as
the day job, the Countryside Team also organise events at Grange Farm to
promote the local natural environment to young and old alike.
Yes, the Alver Valley really is the peace and quiet of the countryside that we all
crave, but without the long journey and costly fuel to get there. In future editions
we hope to tell you more about the treasures that make up the Alver Valley, but
for now, why not put on comfy shoes, pack a picnic and explore. Access is available
via a series of pathways but routes where parking is available are at: Carters Copse
(off Grange Road), Cherque Way (Lee) or, over Apple Dumpling Bridge (off Alver
Meadow, Grange Road).
A fantastic signpost and seat carved by Andy Frost, a local artist welcomes you at

years.
Other highlights included a visit by the delegation and their hosts
to the historic and beautiful 14th century town of Saint Jean

morning’s Civic Church Service was followed by a friendly

s part of Recycle Week 2012, authorities in Hampshire
A worked in partnership to organise almost 100 events to
promote the reuse or recycling of small electrical items
such as toasters, kettles and hairdryers. Fourteen sites across
Gosport took part in accepting collections, including schools,
community centres and libraries. Young and old brought along
items to give them a new lease of life, amongst them a 1974
hairdryer - in its original packaging!
Elson Infant School won the schools competition for the
greatest weight of items collected per pupil, receiving their super
prize, a laptop from Councillor Derek Kimber (see right).
The recycling roadshow at Gosport Ferry also gave out
information and competition cards, with winner, Terry Rhodes
from Elson, receiving a new TV from The Mayor, Councillor
Richard Dickson. Both competition prizes were donated by
sponsors Weeecare,
The Council’s Swap Day held at St Thomas’ Church Hall, Elson,
was a huge success. Local residents brought along unwanted items
and displayed them so if anyone liked or could make use of it, they
could take it home - for free. Anything left at the end of the day was then collected by Jacobs Well, thereby helping that charity. One
visitor said: “It was great. I took along some surplus household items and managed to pick up some really useful things to take home
myself. It was nice to see smiling people leaving with things I’d donated, proving the old saying that one man’s junk is another man’s
treasure. What a great idea.”
Textiles and shoes were collected for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity plus a whole van load of electrical
items including mobile phones, kettles, lamps, microwaves and vacuum cleaners were donated for Recycle Week.
The next Community Swap Day is on Saturday 29 September from 10am - 1pm at St Faith’s Church, Lee-on-the-Solent, so why
not have a clear out and come along. You don’t even have to bring an item to take one away, but every item helps!
10 If you missed Recycle Week and have electrical items to dispose of, they can be recycled all year round at the Gosport Household
Waste Recycling Centre, Grange Road. Alternatively, if your items are reusable why not offer them to charity? For more information
