BIRDS: THE MASTERS OF ADAPTATION
Birds are masters at adaptation. We can learn a lot by looking at their beaks and feet.
Learn how you can determine what type of habitat a bird lives in and what food it eats
through a fun hands-on activity using tools to mimic beak sizes and shapes. We’ll

MARSH UNDER THE MOON
You’ve seen Cheyenne Bottoms in the daytime, but what happens when the sun goes
down, and the moon rises over our marsh? Register with an adult to come out to the
Kansas Wetlands Education Center for an evening of spider sniffing, bat detection,
and checking out the eye shine of various wetland animals. Fluorescence (emission of
light) occurs frequently in nature in some minerals and in many biological forms. We’ll
check out some examples and play some of our own glow-in-the-dark games! Par-
ticipants will roast hot dogs and enjoy smores in the KWEC fire pit. We’ll spend much
of the program outdoors, so dress for the weather and wear closed toed shoes. This
program will be held at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
The program is open to children ages 6–12 accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration
is required and is due by Tuesday, October 12th. No scholarships are available for this
program.

AIRPLANES AND STEM KIDS’ DAY OUT
The morning will start out at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center. Then after a few ac-
tivities, we’re going to load up on a bus and head out to Barton Community College. At
the college, kids are going to explore physics of flight with a paper airplane challenge.
We will learn about lift, drag, and gravity by folding paper airplanes from templates,
then we will build and test our own designs to see which plane can stay in the air lon-
gest, farthest, and is most accurate. Participants will be required to bring a lunch and
beverage in a cooler (with ice if needed). After lunch, we’re off to the Kansas Wetlands
Education Center for some STEM activities. Invertebrates play an important role in
the wetland ecosystem and are numerous at Cheyenne Bottoms. Come discover the
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math behind these critters through a variety of
hands-on, interactive activities. After the KWEC, we’ll head back to the Activity Center
where we’ll spend the rest of the day doing crafts and organized activities. Students
will be bused by USD 428, so please make sure you fill out a transportation form when
you register your child. Participants will be required to wear mask while being trans-
ported by USD 428.
Partial scholarships are available.
