FROM YOUR MAYOR A Very Happy New Year! Bring on 2023 and goodbye to 2022, which marked another year of meteoric growth and success, both of which are no longer just celebrated, they are the expectation! Our success over the past several years, especially those in 2022, just go to show what many of us have known for years: Selma is a premier city and the pride of IH-35! I want to thank each of you for your continued faith in our outstanding City Council and dedicated City Staff as we continue to strive each day to make Selma a better place! In September 2022, City Council voted to once again lower the property tax rate to $0.1919 per $100 of valuation, marking the 11th straight year in which the property tax rate remained the same or decreased. As you will see, we have managed to keep this im- pressive streak while continuing to deliver exceptional services and numerous quality-of-life initiatives. While other cities are being forced to increase property taxes to deliver services, Selma is once again proving that it is possible to deliver more while charging less. During this streak, we have maintained the lowest tax rate of neighboring cities while also continuing our exciting growth, which is something we can all be proud of! Commercial Expansion The past year proved yet again that Selma is one of the premier locations for economic development in the Greater San Antonio Area! In August, Ulta Beauty opened its 10th San Antonio location at The Forum. Ulta has long sought a location in our area and we are excited to finally welcome them to Selma! Another business that was recently added is Skechers Foot- wear. Opening soon, Skechers Footwear will take the place of World Market in The Forum, adding yet another high-profile business to our retail sector. For those with a sweet tooth, Crumbl Cookies recently set up shop in The Forum to give you that sugar rush we all need this time of year! We are also excited to welcome two new custom vehicle businesses to Selma: Rolltechs Specialty Vehicles and Ultimate Top Drives. Rolltechs Special- ty Vehicles are one of the premier specialty vehicle manufacturers, with years of experience in building and customizing a variety of specialty vehicles includ- ing mobile command vehicles, food trucks, commu- nications trailers, and many more. Similarly, Ultimate Top Drives serves as the area’s leading builder of CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 ONLINE AT WWW.CI.SELMA.TX.US 3

FROM YOUR MAYOR DOT, will expand almost 20 miles of I-35 from N. Walters Street to FM 1103. The project will add two non-toll elevat- ed lanes between the frontage road and I-35 proper from AT&T Center Parkway to FM 3009. The elevated lanes will include one high occupancy vehicle lane and two gen- eral purpose lanes in each direction. Although this project may impact traffic across the region, once completed, these additions should help Selma and the surrounding region keep pace with the expected growth of the area. Quality of Life Throughout 2022, we continued our recent focus on quality-of-life initiatives. Along with the Cibolo Creek Recreational Trail and planning of future pedestrian improvements to Lookout Road, Selma broke ground on the highly-anticipated Heroes Memorial. The new Heroes Memorial will welcome visitors to City Hall and pay tribute to our past, present, and future military members and first responders. Construction on the Heroes Memorial began in September, with completion scheduled for Spring 2023. Speaking of annual events, 2022 saw the continued growth of a number of events that have become a staple of family fun in Selma and the surrounding area! This October, we once again served as host city for the RE/ MAX Skylight Balloon Fest! This event continues to grow each year, with more than 22,000 attendees in 2022. We look forward to an even more successful event in 2023! The city also saw a major upswing in attendance at a number of city-sponsored events. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk-or-Treat, and Christmas at the Harrison House events each saw an exponential increase in attendance! We cannot wait to see what 2023 holds for these special events and look forward to seeing even more of you as we gather to celebrate our fantastic city! Conclusion As you can see, 2022 was another great year for the City of Selma and 2023 is shaping up to be even more exciting! I am committed to working with City Council to continue our efforts in the new year. Together, we are excited to keep the momentum going when it comes to projects and events in the works. I am also very commit- ted to working with residents. I believe residents provide a wealth of ideas and perspectives. Working in collabora- tion with the community is a major priority for me and the Council as this year moves forward. Selma is a wonderful community because of the contributions of everyone who lives and works here, and I am very proud to represent this city we call home. As I look ahead to this exciting year, it’s my hope for all residents that 2023 is ultimately filled with opportunity and joy, and that we can celebrate another year together in this beautiful city. Thank you and Happy New Year! Mayor Tom Daly ONLINE AT WWW.CI.SELMA.TX.US 7
