*NEW CHANGES AT EXTRATIME*
As you are aware, we are commi ed to the con nua on of the a(er school club. Unfortunately we did not
receive the uptake we had expected from both the local schools. Therefore we have had to reconsider the
number of days that Extra me will run during the term me week. We want to ensure the provision con nues
to be a fun, social and exci ng environment for children to enjoy with their friends. We have reviewed all the
consulta on feedback and worked closely with Herons Dale School and West Sussex County Council to make
an informed decision about which days the club will run. Based on parent/carer feedback we have made the
decision to run the a)er school club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from January 2018.
Extra me always want your feedback, so please let us know your thoughts about the upcoming changes. I
would also love to hear if you have any other ques ons or comments about the a(er school club or holiday
schemes. You can reach us either at the club, by phone on 01273 420580, or by email at

Children in Recep on, Year 1 and Year 2 are en tled to a free lunch.
All other years will be the above price.
Why Choose a School Lunch?
There is moun#ng evidence in support of school meals, as they are more nutri#onally complete than a
packed lunch and provide just the right amount of energy for children.
Children having a school lunch are:
Encouraged to eat and enjoy a wider variety of foods.
More likely to eat fruit and vegetables every day.
Less likely to drink sweet drinks and have water instead.
Able to develop their social skills, siXng at the lunch table chaXng with friends and ea ng with
cutlery.
Served balanced meals that are more likely to reach the guideline amounts of vitamins and
minerals.
Able to enjoy food which has been freshly prepared.
Are you claiming your free school meals?
If you are in receipt of certain benefits your child may be en#tled to Free School Meals (FSM). Even if
your child does not wish to eat these meals, this will raise income for the school so please sign up.
For more informa#on contact the school office
All enquiries will be dealt with confiden#ally.
SNOW PLAN
We are approaching that me of year when the fluffy white stuff may fall from the
heavens above. Closing the school is never an easy decision to make and not one I take
lightly. I have to take several factors in to account; we have many children travelling
from a large area on a variety of transport, also that staff have to travel from a wide area as well and I
need to be sure that we will have enough staff on site to ensure that the children are kept safe.
Just to clarify with you the arrangements for closing the school, should the need arise.
I will endeavour to make the decision at approximately 7:00am having spoken to key school personnel
including one of our co-chairs, Rebecca Dunne or Ian Porri , however, due to deteriora ng weather
condi ons some mes it may be later
If the decision to close the school is made, I will inform West Sussex County Council and the following
radio sta ons; Heart FM (102.4 & 103.5) & Splash FM (107.7)
A text will be sent to those parents who have registered with our tex ng service and an announcement
will also appear on our website www.heronsdale.co.ukDates for the Diary

much for your engagement!

Teachers have started sending out good news about achievements your child has made and will
con nue to do so. If you have not yet signed up or have lost your code, please contact the school
and we will re-send to you.
It would be really fantas c if 100% of parents could sign up to this app, as this would make the sharing
of good news so much more enjoyable.Islands and Oceans
Stunning Start
At the start of term, we kicked off our new topic,
Islands and Oceans, with a wonderful Pirate Day! The
children and staff came in dressed as pirates and each
class spent the morning building a vessel from junk
modelling materials. These
are now on display in the
corridor, as you
walk down to the
classrooms and
they are amazing!
In the a(ernoon,
each class had to
'row' their vessel
to the Hall and
were met by
Pirate Pearl who gave each class a challenge.
These were either sensory-based explora on or a team-building exercise
depending on the needs of each class.
Staff worked really hard to set up the dinner hall as a forest, complete
with Christmas Trees, leaves, a campfire circle and a shelter. The light
room was transformed into an ocean with blue material, so( toys, ocean
drums, water beads and an ocean-projected floor. Maracas playground
became an island with sand, noisy seagulls, palm tree, treasure chest and
a walk the plank! When the challenges were complete, each class
collected their treasure (chocolate gold coins) and a cer ficate. It was a
brilliant day, made all the be er by the fantas c costumes. Thank you so
much to parents / carers for your support with this and for the junk
modelling materials and thank you to all the staff who made a huge
effort to make this so successful.Group Triple P (Children Under 10) - Takes the guesswork out of paren#ng!

07540 672009Shoreham Beach Clean There will be a beach clean on Sunday 4th March in Shoreham (from 10-12 noon) – The World's Biggest Beach Clean - and they are hoping to break a world record (in terms of numbers of volunteers a ending). Given the heightened awareness of the issue just now we are very excited about this! The beach clean is being run in conjunc on with the launch of a children's picture book, Finn the Fortunate Tiger Shark and his Fantas c Friends, wri en by a local author Georgina Stevens, which raises awareness of the issue of ocean plas c and its terrible impact on our marine life. It should be really fun with lots of other ac vi es for the children such as a treasure hunt, some monitoring of seaweed species and goody bags for the children a ending (with lots of items that save / reduce the use of plas c). They will also have talks from the local council on what happens to plas c once it's recycled / how we can ensure that what we do use does get recycled, and from Kids Against Plas c - two amazing teenage girls who are brilliant about geXng young people engaged on the issue. The book is beau fully wri en and illustrated (see h p://www.bethechangebooks.org/) and accompanied by the audiobook narrated by Jeremy Irons and featuring Joss Stone's song Oceans. 100% of the profits from the book will be split between Greenpeace UK and the Social Plas c Founda on. We've had some wonderful endorsements for the book so are hoping for a number of celebri es also to be a ending the beach clean! They would love as many of the children from the local area to be involved as possible – and help us set a new record! Please could the parents let us know (via the email address on the website) if they are hoping to a end so we can plan numbers of bags etc required! We will also be circula ng the informa on on Facebook (h ps://www.facebook.com/bethechangebooks/) Management Committee Update The Management Commi ee have made visits to the school to observe ‘What goes on’. Rebecca Dunne, Co-chair of the Management Commi ee, would like to congratulate everyone for a fantas c Ofsted result. “The commitment and hard work really shone through. Well done everyone”

Strategy Section—Colourful Semantics What is Colourful Seman cs? Colourful seman cs is an approach aimed at helping children to develop their grammar but it is rooted in the meaning of words (seman cs). Colourful seman cs reassembles sentences by cuXng them up into their thema c roles and then colour codes them. The approach has 4 key colour coded stages. There are further stages for adverbs, adjec ves, conjunc ons and nega ves. 1. WHO – Orange 2. WHAT DOING – Yellow 3. WHAT – Green 4. WHERE – Blue The approach helps children to organise their sentences into key levels. The approach is used in stages and helps children develop language and vocabulary in addi on to gramma cal structure. It can be used to help children who are star ng to develop language and have limited vocabulary to confident talkers who struggle to organise the gramma cal content of their sentences. Who can use Colourful Seman cs? The approach can be used with children with a range of Speech, Language and Communica on Needs including: • Specific Language Impairment • Developmental Delay or Disorder • Au s c Spectrum Condi on • Downs Syndrome • Literacy difficul es Why use Colourful Seman cs? There are a range of benefits to using this approach, including but not limited to; • Encouraging wider vocabulary • Making sentences longer • Helps children to answer ques ons or generate responses to ques ons • Developing use of nouns, verbs, preposi ons and adjec ves • Improves story telling skills • Can be transferred to wri en sentences and wri en language comprehension • Can be carried out individually or in small groups Many of our pupils use this strategy and it also supports our delivery of Literacy to all learners.
