From Our Pastor Desk/Desde el escritorio de nuestro párroco
Good People of Holy Cross,
Autumn has arrived, school buses frequent every roadway, and we continue to be
challenged by a virus that kills us, and racial disparity that chokes our hearts. The power of prayer
is a gift that allows us to continue to do something during these days of anxiety and worry. Wild
fires that carry smoke from one side of our country to the other, violence and protests in cities in
between give us a longer list of prayer requests. I invite you to pray this prayer if you cannot find
any words of your own.
God of our hearts,
We ask for your wisdom and love as you surround us with the mysteries of the
universe. Teach us by your word and example that true wisdom comes from you
alone. Send your Spirit upon all of us as we pray for all of those who are affected by global
pandemic, the disastrous fires in the west, for those suffering from the ravages of hurricane Sally
and for the unrest in our country. Reassure all of us, make us calm and open, and always generous
in reaching out to one another. Help us to be a listener and a good friend. Enlarge our vision;
lesson our fears; instill confidence. Bring us peaceful hearts, hearts that know Someone greater
than ourselves sends us forth. Amen

Llegó el otoño, los autobuses escolares frecuentan todas las carreteras y seguimos siendo
desafiados por un virus que nos mata y la disparidad racial que nos ahoga el corazón. El poder de
la oración es un don que nos permite seguir haciendo algo durante estos días de ansiedad y

4Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15, the Anniversary of the
independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The celebration lasts until October 15,
during which time Mexico, Chile and Belize will also celebrate their
independence days.
According to the recent U.S. Census, 55 million people, or 17% of the
American population, are of Hispanic or Latino origin. More than two-thirds
consider themselves Roman Catholic.
The Catholic Church in the United States boasts two archbishops, 12 bishops,
and 14 auxiliary bishops of Hispanic origin. About one third of all Catholics in
the United States are Hispanic, and that percentage is expected to grow.
Indeed, the future of the Catholic Church in the United States rests with the
Hispanic Catholic community.
Here are five things Hispanic Catholics can do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
1. Pray a Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe On December 9, 1531, the Blessed Mother appeared to Juan
Diego on Tepayac Hill and instructed him to build her a church. After several trips to the local bishop, he was finally able to
convince him of the apparition when Mary left her own miraculous image on Juan Diego’s tilma. Though the garment should
have disintegrated within decades, it still hangs today in the Basilica in Mexico City, a pilgrimage site for millions upon
millions of Catholics. Pope Pius XII decreed Our Lady of Guadalupe to be Patroness of the Americas. Our Lady of Guadalupe
remains the most popular devotion in the Hispanic Catholic community.
2. Learn about the life and writings of Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope Pope Francis is
the pride and joy of the Latino Catholic community! The former Archbishop of Buenos Aries is known for his simplicity of
life, love for the poor, and concern for the care of creation. His experience in Argentina formed his faith and colors his
papacy.
3.Connect with a National Hispanic Catholic organization Hispanic Catholics have been coming together
for decades to serve the needs of the growing community in the United States. A sample of these organizations includes:
the National Catholic Council for Hispanic Ministry, the Instituto Fe Y Vida, the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders, and
the Federation of Pastoral Institutes. Investigate the work of these organizations and find out how to get involved.
4. Prepare for the V Encuentro The I Encuentro was held in 1972 in Washington, DC, to facilitate participation of
the Spanish speaking Catholic community in leadership within the Catholic Church in the United States. Future meetings
focused on evangelization, integral education, and social justice issues, as well as youth and leadership formation. The V
Encuentro will meet in Fall 2018 to discern ways the Church can better respond to the Hispanic presence, and to assist the
Latino Catholic community in responding to the call to the New Evangelization as missionary disciples serving the entire
Church. Preparations for V Encuentro are happening now in local dioceses and in lay ecclesial movements.
5. Get Educated in Hispanic Ministry The next generation of Latino Catholic leaders will need some formal
theological and pastoral training. Saint Joseph’s College online Theology programs offer a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry to
Latino Catholics, a seven-course program that grounds pastoral ministry in solid Catholic theology. Courses include
Foundations in Catholic Theology, the New Testament, Catholic Moral Theology, Theology of the Sacraments, Ministry in
the Intercultural Church in America, the History of Latino Catholics in the Church, and Pastoral Leadership among Latino
Catholics. The certificate can be earned at the undergraduate or graduate level and can serve as a stepping-stone to a
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to take pride in the accomplishments of Hispanic Americans in all segments of
society – politics, entertainment, sports, the arts, and academia. There is pride as well in the accomplishments of the
Hispanic Catholic community in serving the needs of others, both physical and spiritual, by living the Gospel. A celebration
of heritage is a celebration of the faith!
5Mes de la Herencia Hispana Septiembre 15-Octubre 15
El Mes de la Herencia Hispana comienza el 15 de septiembre, aniversario de
la independencia de cinco países latinoamericanos: Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. La celebración dura hasta el 15 de oc-
tubre, tiempo durante el cual México, Chile y Belice también celebrarán sus
días de independencia. Según el censo reciente de EE. UU., 55 millones de
personas, o el 17% de la población estadounidense, son de origen hispano o
latino. Más de dos tercios se consideran católicos romanos. La Iglesia Católica
en los Estados Unidos cuenta con dos arzobispos, 12 obispos y 14 obispos
auxiliares de origen hispano. Aproximadamente un tercio de todos los católi-
cos en los Estados Unidos son hispanos y se espera que ese porcentaje crezca.
De hecho, el futuro de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos depende de la
comunidad católica hispana.
Aquí hay cinco cosas que los católicos hispanos pueden hacer para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana.

su sencillez de vida, amor por los pobres y preocupación por el cuidado de la creación. Su experiencia en Argentina formó su
fe y colorea su papado.
3. Conectarte con una organización Católica Hispana Nacional.
Los católicos hispanos se han unido durante décadas para atender las necesidades de la creciente comunidad en los Estados
Unidos. Una muestra de estas organizaciones incluye: el Consejo Nacional Católico para el Ministerio Hispano, el Instituto Fe
Y Vida, la Asociación Católica de Líderes Latinos y la Federación de Institutos Pastorales. Investigue el trabajo de estas organ-
izaciones y descubra cómo participar.
4. Prepárate para el V Encuentro.

La próxima generación de líderes latinos católicos necesitará una formación teológica y pastoral formal. Los programas de
teología en línea del Colegio Saint Joseph ofrecen un Certificado en Ministerio Pastoral para Católicos Latinos, un programa
de siete cursos que fundamenta el ministerio pastoral en una sólida teología católica. Los cursos incluyen Fundamentos en
Teología Católica, Nuevo Testamento, Teología Moral Católica, Teología de los Sacramentos, Ministerio en la Iglesia Intercul-
tural en América, Historia de los Católicos Latinos en la Iglesia y Liderazgo Pastoral entre los Católicos Latinos. El certificado
puede obtenerse a nivel de pregrado o posgrado y puede servir como un trampolín hacia una licenciatura o maestría. El Mes

The mission of the Knights of Columbus is to provide members and their families
with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities’
families, and young people.
In Service to the Church
The Knights organized the traffic flow for the drive-through confession and, with the Woman’s Club,
began the organizing of volunteers to usher at the outdoor masses.
In Serving the Community
We held an evening “Call to Prayer to end Racism, Violence and Injustice.” The Knights made
significant financial contributions to aid in parishioner financial relief and to St. Vincent de Paul.
For the Good of the Council
We have reached out to our brother Knights during quarantine to help, especially the elderly and
those living alone. We continue to hold virtual Council meetings to find ways to generates funds. We
are proud to announce our first ever – Pork Butt BBQ Dinner Fund Raiser November 7th. Details coming
soon!
For the Family
The Knights will be doing the, “Keep Christ in Christmas and The Consecration of the Family” again
this year, as well, we will be having On-Line Monastery Baked Goods and Christmas Card sales.

Consejo para encontrar formas de generar fondos. Estamos orgullosos de anunciar nuestra primera

What have you been doing during Covid?
“We've been making masks. I sew cloth masks with help
from our children, my husband makes unique 3D printed
masks. Mostly for healthcare workers, foster care, places that
do food distribution to the needy, but also for family, friends,
and neighbors. Not as many as some, but we have made over
500 so far.”

¿Qué has estado haciendo durante Covid?
“Hemos estado haciendo máscaras. Coso máscaras de tela con la ayuda de nuestros hijos, mi esposo hace máscaras
únicas impresas en 3D principalmente para trabajadores de la salud, hogares de acogida, lugares que distribuyen
alimentos a los necesitados, pero también para familiares, amigos y vecinos. No hemos hecho tantos como algunos,
pero hasta ahora hemos ganado más de 500.”
