Our Paschal Journey Together
My Dear Friends,
It seems that whenever we are talking about climate change, or the corona virus, or today’s
society the prevailing mantra seems to have become ‘the new normal’, even when it seems to
call us to difficult changes. However, for us as Catholic Christians this should not cause
great concern for this has always been our reality. Afterall our Sunday Liturgical celebration follow a three-year cycle
of readings, each focusing on one of the synoptic Gospels, so that we hear the same readings every three years. But,
even though the Gospel never changes, our lives have, and we hear the Scriptures in a new light inviting us to an on-
going transformation. Even more significantly, the most significant celebration of the Christian life, the Paschal
mystery, is a moveable feast, with its dates changing each year. All of this occurs because, since the earliest days of the
Church, Easter has been defined as the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox, April 17th this
year. Once the date of Easter is determined count back 46 days to determine the beginning of the period of preparation,
Ash Wednesday (March 2 this year), then, from Easter, count forward 50 days to find the end of the Season, Pentecost
(June 5)
Every year, then, we enter a new normal, particularly in this nearly 100 days of what amounts to a communal Paschal
retreat, living more of the Gospel of John. This retreat, a journey for those adults preparing to enter the Church, the
Catechumen, toward their Baptism and those Baptized the opportunity to walk back to that first encounter with God, by
our receiving ashes calling us to turn away from sin and live the Gospels. On the First Sunday of Lent the Catechumen
are chosen for Baptism, becoming the Elect of God, and the Baptized remember their own election. As a community
we will then journey through the Transfiguration, experiencing the divinity of Jesus, answer the question about who
Jesus is to us, and strengthen ourselves to carry the Cross. Along the way the Elect will experience a series of Scrutiny
(3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent) in which Jesus will offer the living water (Jn 4:5-42); have their blindness removed
(Jn 9:1-45); and be given the offer of new life (Jn 11:1-45) and be presented the Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. Although
these Scrutiny focus on the Elect they are an opportunity for each of us to deepen our own personal relationship with
the person of Jesus.
On the 6th Sunday of Lent, The Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we enter the final part of our baptismal journey
joyously welcoming Jesus to his final entrance into Jerusalem to fulfill his Paschal journey and begin our Holy Week
celebrations. On Thursday we end our Lenten journey and begin the Triduum, being invited to the upper room with
Jesus and having our feet washed for service (Jn 13:1-15), commemorating the Passion on Good Friday (Jn 18), and
arriving at the empty tomb after the Resurrection of Easter (Lk 24:1-12). At the Easter Vigil the Elect enter the Church,
receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. It is then that we can as a Church live the mystery
of our own baptisms in the mystagogia of Easter, our new personal experience of the sacraments and the community,
and yes enter a new normal to be lived after receiving the Spirit offered on Pentecost.
As a Synodal Church our period of preparation begins on Ash Wednesday and is lived through Lent. Besides receiving
ashes and committing to embracing the Gospels we usually make a commitment to prayer, fasting, and alms giving as a
way of helping us to fulfill our commitment. We take time to reflect upon our lives and reconcile for the things we
have done which have caused us to break our relationship with God and others so that we might more fully love God
and others. Finally, we also try to take the time to sit quietly with God, listening to his Word in our lives.
To enter this new normal in our relationship with God and others we must live this Lenten/Easter Season to its fullest. If
you haven’t already thought about it maybe you could think about the person you find the hardest to love. Begin to
pray for that person, don’t pray to change then, don’t pray to take away the things you may not like about them, but
pray for them. Pray for their happiness, pray for their success, pray for their health. What are the things that keep you
for entering into a deeper relationship with others; social media, personal activities, other distractions, whatever it might
be; begin Fasting from one of those things. Take time to sit with the Lord to determine which one of your gifts (time,
talent, treasures) which God has given you should be used for others in the Community.
Spending the time of Lent/Easter praying, fasting, and alms giving in this way will really prepare you to live a new
normal with God and others.
May we journey together through this Lent/Easter season welcoming our new brothers and sisters and living the
ministry of the Church together.
Have a Holy Lent/Easter,
Dcn. EdPage 4

Nuestra Jornada Pascual Juntos
Pascua a plenitud.
