IGNITE DAVIE is a place-based last dollar scholarship for
students in Davie County and through the opportunities it
provides, it is making a difference in the lives of the
students in our community. IGNITE DAVIE will pay tuition,
required fees and a stipend for books for students to attend
Davidson-Davie Community College full-time.

In 2021, over 80 students joined the IGNITE DAVIE program and
are benefiting from the opportunities it provides— students
like Josh Pilcher.

Josh was born and raised in Davie County, graduated from Davie
High in 2021 and is attending Davidson-Davie Community College
through the IGNITE DAVIE College Promise Program.
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
Davidson-Davie Community College offers a wide variety of
classes and degree programs for its students to pursue. This
allows students to find their passions, no matter what the
field. DDCC offers programs ranging from business, accounting
& computers to engineering and education as well as others
like zoo & aquarium science and sustainable agriculture.

“It’s not your daddy’s community college,” said Carolyn
McManamy, Director of Davie CONNECT when referring to the wide
array of classes available to students.

Pilcher is studying to be a machinist, taking classes in
industrial safety, machining calculation and a machining class
in and of itself. “I’ve wanted to be a machinist since I was
in the 9th grade,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to do it, and
this worked out perfectly.”

After going through the college application process and
entering his first semester at DDCC Josh encourages other
students to “power through and get it done because it’s really
worth it after you do it.”

IGNITE DAVIE is playing an instrumental role in preparing
students for their future careers and at the same time is
saving these students and their parents thousands of dollars
in tuition and fees.

This college promise program is not just a promise for today
but it’s also a promise for generations to come. The $3
Million endowment ensures that today’s kindergarteners will
have these same opportunities when they become seniors in high
school and are looking toward higher education.

Scott Bader to Invest $16
Million in New Production
Site in Mocksville

Global chemical company, Scott Bader, has acquired a new
facility in Mocksville as it strives to meet growing domestic
and global demand for its market-leading structural adhesives
and gelcoats.

The company has invested $16 million to purchase a 110,000
square foot industrial building on a 15-acre site in the
SouthPoint Business Park on Hwy 601 N. With further
investment, the site will be developed into a state-of-the-art
gelcoat and structural adhesives manufacturing facility. This
will be the company’s second North American manufacturing
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
site; the new development is expected to create 27 new jobs
locally, with 21 in manufacturing and the other roles shared
across HR, R&D, commercial support and applications.

Mocksville Expansion Will Help Meet
Global Demand
The site was specifically selected to tap into North
Carolina’s growing advanced manufacturing sector. The facility
will be built with modern design principles and operate to GMP
conditions, manufacturing a range of innovative Scott Bader
products. The plant aims to be fully operational by Q1 2023.

“We’re delighted a company with the pedigree of Scott Bader
has chosen our county to invest in and expand their offering
nationally and overseas,” said Terry Bralley, president of the
Davie County Economic Development Commission. “The new
infrastructure will be a great addition to the area and the
creation of 27 immediate new jobs is a real economic boost. I
hope Scott Bader and our region mutually benefit from one
another for many years to come.”

Scott Bader is the sixth manufacturer to select Davie County
over the past four months. Last week, DFA USA, which designs
and manufactures sound deadening and insulation materials for
the automotive industry, announced its expansion and
relocation to Mocksville. Since June, Sportsfield Specialties,
the industry-leading manufacturer of athletic field equipment;
Carolina Shutters & Blinds, which manufactures custom
plantation blinds; Liberty Storage, which designs and
constructs custom storage buildings; and Hayward Holdings, a
global designer and manufacturer of pool equipment and
associated automation systems, have established facilities in
Mocksville.

Davie County is Part of Global
Growth Strategy
Commenting on the latest expansion plans, Art Murphy, sales
director for Scott Bader North America said, “This latest
investment makes clear our commitment to the North American
market, as well as to our global growth strategy.” He
continued, “It comes as we also invest $2 million in Canada.
We now have the additional capacity we need to be more
responsive to customer needs and leverage the interest in our
primer-less structural adhesives – amplifying the success
we’ve already had with the portfolio.”

Scott Bader’s international presence now totals seven
manufacturing sites, 17 offices, and two joint ventures
worldwide, with future expansion plans firmly focused on
establishing its innovative composite and adhesive products in
North America and Asia.
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
According to a statement by the company, in keeping with its
2036 vision to steer towards sustainable growth, while
increasing its global footprint, environmental impact has been
a key consideration throughout the North Carolina development
and will remain central to the investments in its new site.
Investing in people and technology to ensure both the build
and ongoing operations are as efficient as possible.

IGNITE DAVIE Launches Inve$t
in our Kids Capital Campaign!
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
The signs tell the story. Gildan is hiring, Comfort Built is
hiring, Ashley Furniture is hiring… and the list goes on.

Over the past several years, business and industry have
struggled to find a skilled workforce to meet their needs. The
2020 pandemic only worsened the challenges, and the lack of
skilled workers to fill open positions is even greater today.

Estimates for residents 25-years-old and older in 2019 showed
that 42.2% have a high school diploma or less and 21.3% have
some college but no degree. In total, 63.5% do not have an
Associate or higher degree. We can reasonably extend that to
say that potentially 63.5% of Davie’s workforce does not have
the training and education necessary for the jobs available.

Just as companies invest in high-quality tools and equipment
for their business, we need to invest in Davie’s workforce.
Education and training beyond high school impact the
individual and the community!

IGNITE DAVIE College Promise has the potential to impact our
current reality and improve the educational attainment of our
county, but we must ensure the Promise will be sustainable for
current and future generations!
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
What is IGNITE DAVIE College
Promise?

Cassidy Webb, 2013 Davie High graduate and now an attorney
in Washington, D.C., is one of the youngest contributors to
  IGNITE DAVIE.
IGNITE DAVIE is a College Promise Program that invests in the
students of Davie County! IGNITE DAVIE is a place-based last-
dollar scholarship, which means students must live in and
attend school in Davie County. Beginning with the Class of
2020, IGNITE DAVIE pays tuition and fees for students to
attend either campus of Davidson-Davie Community College full-
time. A stipend of up to $250 per semester is also included
for books. Students may pursue a Certificate, Diploma, or
Associate/Transfer Program.

IGNITE DAVIE is a place-based last-dollar scholarship. It is
applied after all other funding sources. It is NOT based on
academic merit or financial need. It is for all residents.
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
How will we pay for the IGNITE
DAVIE College Promise?
Early estimates projected that a $3 Million endowment would
successfully pay the last dollar scholarships and fund the
program into the future. In fall 2021, IGNITE DAVIE has
commitments of $2 Million of the $3 Million goal! The Inve$t
in our Kids Capital Campaign is designed to raise the
remaining $1 Million needed to reach the goal and secure the
Promise!

Once the fundraising goal is reached, IGNITE DAVIE College
Promise will truly be a promise to all Davie students who
choose to pursue additional education after high school at
Davidson-Davie Community College!

“One of the many things I am proud to participate in through
the Davie Community Foundation is helping with IGNITE DAVIE so
that all future Davie graduates can have the opportunity to
attend community college for free,” said Davin Brown,
foundation board member.

Who is Investing in IGNITE DAVIE?
In 2019, community partners collaborated to make the initial
$925,000 investment in IGNITE DAVIE. These partners made five-
year commitments toward the $3 million goal: County of Davie,
Davidson County Community College Foundation, Davie Community
Foundation, Davie County Chamber of Commerce, Davie County
Economic Development Commission, Phillip and Darlene Fuller,
United Way of Davie County, and Zachary Wright.

In addition to the partners, Davie County is full of generous
people who seem to rise to the occasion when there is a need
or a program that is important for children or the community!
More than three hundred generous donors have contributed
amounts ranging from $20 to $125,000!
IGNITE DAVIE Student Profile: Josh Pilcher
“While serving on the Davie Community Foundation Board I have
become keenly aware of the generosity of our community,” said
Candy Poplin. “Participating in the kickoff for IGNITE DAVIE
has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my tenure
with the board.”

Peggy Wallace, pictured with her grandchildren and great-
grandchildren, has supported IGNITE DAVIE from the beginning
and is including the program as a beneficiary in her will.
Peggy Wallace of Mocksville is one of the early contributors
to the program. Peggy has eighteen great-grandchildren,
thirteen of which live in Davie County right now and could
benefit from IGNITE DAVIE!

“I think this is the best thing Davie County has done for
Education EVER!” said Peggy. “I just think it’s a wonderful
program. A lot of kids wouldn’t be able to go to college
without it because they just don’t have the ability to pay. I
am so happy the fundraising has gone as well as it has. Our
kids deserve the chance to better themselves.”
Peggy has already given generously to IGNITE DAVIE and she has
instructed her family to add to IGNITE DAVIE from her estate
when she dies. She is truly committed to educating Davie’s
children!

Gladys Scott is proud to support a program that could help her
grandchildren further their education.
Gladys and Clyde Scott were also early contributors to IGNITE
DAVIE, and have grandchildren in the county who may one day
benefit from the program. “Our family is a proud supporter of
IGNITE DAVIE. We hope that Davie High students will seek out
opportunities like IGNITE DAVIE College Promise for post-high
school assistance. This program is a wonderful way to prepare
local young adults with a college education and skills to
enter the workplace,” said Clyde and Gladys.

Although she doesn’t have children or grandchildren who will
benefit from the program, Ruth Hoyle, a retired librarian, was
moved to give because she believes that IGNITE DAVIE is good
for the entire community. “Anything we can do to improve the
lives of young people is worthwhile. IGNITE DAVIE is an
investment in our future.”

The importance of IGNITE DAVIE doesn’t just resonate with
seasoned adults. Young couples and singles are giving to the
Promise too. Rebekah Powers, a teacher at Mocksville
Elementary School, made a direct commitment to the Promise
through payroll deduction. In talking with her class about
IGNITE DAVIE, Rebekah pointed out that not only would her
students be eligible when they are high school seniors, her
two-year-old and the baby she is carrying will also be
eligible for the Promise!

William R. Davie Elementary Assistant Principal Sam Brown has
a personal and professional understanding of the importance of
IGNITE DAVIE. As a young person, going to a four-year school
right out of high school wasn’t an option due to finances. Sam
got his start at Surry Community College where he discovered
his passion for education.

“Community college gave me time to grow and mature, and I had
great professors at Surry, especially in English,” said Sam.
“After graduation, I transferred to UNC Greensboro where I
majored in English and got my teaching license.”

Sam taught English at Stokes Early College for his first seven
years in education. “I was blessed to teach in an environment
where I could see the impact community college had on kids.
They got the support they needed, and some are graduating from
four-year schools now,” said Brown. “I definitely want our 3-
year-old daughter to have the opportunity to be part of IGNITE
DAVIE. Hopefully, by giving now, I can help make sure the
Promise is available when she is ready.”

Cassidy Webb, who graduated from Davie High in 2013, the
University of South Carolina in 2017, and law school at Wake
Forest in 2020, is the youngest IGNITE DAVIE donor to date.
Now a practicing attorney in Washington, DC, Cassidy
recognizes the valuable role education has played in her life
and wants to pay it forward.

“As soon as I heard about IGNITE DAVIE, I knew that it was a
program I wanted to support. While there are so many valid
paths to pursue after high school, I firmly believe that if
someone wants to continue their education, tuition costs
should never be a deterrent. I’m so proud of Davie County for
prioritizing this initiative and am excited to see how it
continues to change lives!”

IGNITE DAVIE is an investment in
the future, but it will take ALL of
us to make it a success!
We invite and encourage YOU to get involved in helping IGNITE
DAVIE reach the $3 Million goal! Commitments may be made over
two years, giving many the ability to give more.

Inve$t in our Kids! It truly will be an investment in Davie
County!

SPORTSFIELD SPECIALTIES IS
MAKING MOVES IN NORTH
CAROLINA: Industry-Leading
Sports Equipment Manufacturer
Announces a Move & Expansion
to Mockville

Sportsfield installers are installing Ultra Cross(r) Baseball
Netting at Yankee Stadium.
The next time local baseball star Whit Merrifield crashes into
the wall catching a flyball, the pads protecting him may have
been made by a company that also calls Davie County home.

For over 20 years, Sportsfield Specialties, whose central
headquarters is based in Upstate NY, has been the industry-
leading manufacturer of athletic field equipment for all
levels of play. Their soft goods operation, which produces
netting systems, padding, and mats, will move from its current
location in Salisbury, NC, to a new facility in Mocksville
(Davie County). The impetus for the move is the increased
demand for products like large-scale barrier netting systems
and sweeping graphic wall pad displays.

Sportsfield has been at the forefront of MLB’s protective
netting expansions since 2015 when the league’s commissioner,
Rob Manfred, recommended clubs expand safety barriers down the
foul line. Its product can be found in 23 MLB stadiums and
countless practice facilities.

Josh Hicks installs a netting system at Palisades Park.
The company’s equipment can be found in schools, parks, and
universities across North America and the stadiums of high-
profile teams like MLB’s Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees;
NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins; and Major League
Soccer’s DC United and St. Louis City SC. In the Tarheel
State, Sportsfield has proudly outfitted the Bank of America
Stadium in Charlotte used by the Carolina Panthers, Wake
Forest and Duke Universities, and the ballparks of MiLB teams
the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, High Point Rockers, Charlotte
Knights, and Durham Bulls to name a few.

Matt Schwirtz, North Carolina operations manager, explained
that Sportsfield’s success comes from the company’s innovative
contributions to the athletic field equipment industry. “We’re
manufacturing products that solve problems and clients know
they can trust. Our success has led to more demand, and as a
result, we’ve grown out of our Salisbury plant.”

Matt Schwirtz, North Carolina operations manager, is proud of
Sportsfield’s new facility in Mocksville.
Schwirtz said the new 77,000 square foot facility at 155 Boyce
Drive increases Sportsfield’s production space by
approximately 11,000 square feet and the offices by 7,000
square feet. In addition, the company announced a $2.3 million
building expansion project, which will add another 30,000
square feet to the plant. The move is slated to add
approximately 20 new jobs over the next two years in
production, operations, engineering, and administration. “Most
of our current employees will make the move to Mocksville and
are looking forward to working at the new facility,” Schwirtz
said.

Critical upgrades to the operation include doubling the pad
and netting system sewing capacity; netting system work-area
tripled in size; increased number of loading docks—from 3 to
11; easy interstate access; climate-controlled digital
printing production area; increased warehouse capacity;
enhanced shop flow with increased square footage and modern
amenities; contemporary office space for sales, design, and
administrative staff; and state-of-the-art conference room
technology.

Sportsfield President Sean Clark said, “This initiative
provides our operations and production team with the necessary
space, resources, and working environment to perform at the
highest level possible.” He added the move and expansion will
further Sportsfield’s ability to “deliver a standard of
product quality and service that clients depend on while
supporting the company’s commitment to growth and market
innovation.”

The team at Sportsfield isn’t only excited by the new
facility, they are looking forward to joining the Davie County
community. “We’ve enjoyed getting to know fellow business
leaders and local officials, who’ve all made us feel welcomed
in Mocksville. We’re proud to be joining this community and
look forward to becoming a contributing member,” Clark said.
Danny Srisomphaeng aligns the graphics for a visually
        seamless wall pad display.

Terry Bralley, president of the Davie County Economic
Development Commission, says Sportsfield is a welcome addition
to the community. He explained that the Town of Mocksville and
Davie County are home to numerous well-known manufacturers
producing items such as textiles, furniture, and commercial
airline components, but until now, hasn’t included a sports
equipment manufacturer.

“Economic diversity is essential for growing a healthy and
sustainable economy,” said Bralley. “It opens the doors for
providing the goods and services a growing community needs. We
are pleased to have hit another home run and stepped into the
major leagues as we welcome Sportsfield Specialties to
Mocksville.”

About Sportsfield Specialties
Since 1998, Delhi, NY-based Sportsfield Specialties, Inc.
(SSI) has been the innovative industry leader in the
manufacture and sale of sports construction equipment for the
high school, college, and professional levels of competition.

Davie County 4-H and
Cognition Davie to Offer Life
Skills Workshop Series

We’ve all been there. We wish that we had a better hold of our
finances. We wish we knew how to change the oil in our car. We
wish we knew how to meal plan for the week and stick with it.
Let’s face it, adulting is hard, especially for young people
just starting out.

“Many of the young adults in our community are lacking the
knowledge of basic life skills,” said Danny Lough, Davie
County 4-H extension agent, as he shared the following
statistics. According to a study by FINRA Investor Education
Foundation, 60% of adults in the US do not have a strict
budget and/or have some type of credit card debt. Indeed, the
online job search engine, Indeed, found that 25% of adults
didn’t know what to include on a resume. A study done in 2018
by Tufts University found that 28% of adults didn’t know how
to cook.

“These are skills that adults need for long term success ,”
says Lough. “However, skills like financial literacy, basic
auto maintenance, and interview skills are not being taught to
most of our youth through the school system and are often left
to be taught at home by parents that may or may not be
knowledgeable themselves.”

To gauge the need and interest in a life skills series, Davie
County 4-H and Cognition Davie created a community survey last
spring that reached over 3,000 residents. The survey found
that 88% of participants believed youth needed to be taught
critical life skills. The survey also highlighted the top six
life skills needed by Davie young people: college applications
& financial aid, resume & interview skills, financial
literacy, basic auto mechanics, basic home repair, and cooking
& meal planning. These six life skills will be the main focus
of the “Adulting 101: Life Skills workshop series. Through
this series, youth will learn from experts in the field about
these skills and how best to apply them.

“This isn’t going to be a two-hour lecture about how you
should save money or how you should present yourself during an
interview. That’s not what 4-H and Cognition are about and
that’s not how teenagers learn. Each workshop will have some
lecture, an interactive activity, and then a discussion,”
explains Lough.

“Youth are going to learn these skills from someone
experienced in the field that uses these skills every day.
They’re going to learn how to change a tire from a mechanic.
They are going to create a budget with a banker. They are
going to learn interview skills from real business owners here
in Davie County.”
Cognition Site Coordinator Jessica Huyett, who is two years
out of college, agrees that these life skills are essential
and wishes that she’d had the opportunity to take these types
of classes during her teens. “Even though I’ve been ‘adulting’
for a few years now, there are plenty of these things that I
am looking forward to learning through this series. This is a
great FREE opportunity that I hope plenty of high school
students will take advantage of.”

Her message to high schoolers? “Adulthood will hit you sooner
than you realize. When it does, you won’t have your parents
there to rely on, and you will wish that you had these
skills.”

The Adulting 101: Life Skills workshops are FREE and open to
all Davie County youth ages 14-18. Each workshop will be
presented by an expert(s) in the field and will have a
presentation, activity, and discussion portion. All workshops
will be held at Cognition’s Makerspace from 6-8 p.m. unless
otherwise specified.
