now a renewed interest in medicine as a social process. A doctor can do as much harm
to a patient with the slip of a word as with the slip of a knife.
The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient
who has the disease.
-William Osler.
Have you ever wondered what patients want from an encounter with a doctor?
v Patients want to be able to trust the competence and efficacy of their
caregivers.
v Patients want to be able to negotiate the health care system effectively and to
be treated with dignity and respect.
v Patients want to understand how their sickness or treatment will affect their
lives, and they often fear that their doctors are not telling them everything
they want to know.
v Patients want to discuss the effect their illness will have on their family,
friends and finances.
v Patients worry about the future.
v Patients worry about and want to learn how to care for themselves away
from the clinical settings.
v Patients want physicians to focus on their pain, physical discomfort and
functional disabilities.
The DPR is an important determinant of quality health care. Until not very long
ago, it was common for people to regard doctors as members of their families and the
trust reposed in them extended to matters even beyond the medical needs of the
family. Anecdotal information, however suggests that the DPR is becoming strained.
The commercialization and specialization of the practice of medicine has placed a
heavy reliance on technology at the cost of a meaningful interaction between health-
care seekers and providers at a human level. The pressing demands on the Doctor's
time and the heavy dependence on technology for diagnostic and therapeutic
practices has perhaps diluted the personal touch that is so necessary for a conductive
doctor-patient relationship. In addition, the DPR is affected by a multitude of
sociocultural, economic, political and health system related determinants. Nowadays
practices like corruption in the health management industry, inequality in the health
care delivery and mushrooming of health insurance have altered the relationship
between the Doctor and the Patient. The DPR is a key driver of clinical outcomes –
both in promoting desired results and in preventing adverse outcomes.

The film Munna Bhai MBBS, remake of the film Patch Adams needs a mention here.
It has been shown of-late on TV quite a number of times and many of us have seen it
now. The film had nothing to do with morality of doctors; It was just a reminder to
each one of us that the purpose of a doctor or any human in general should not be to
simply delay the death of the patient, but to increase the person's quality of life. The
role of a clown and a physician are the same – it's to elevate the possible and to relieve
suffering.
“Men, who are occupied in the restoration of health to other men, by the joint
exertion of skill and humanity, are above all the great of the earth.”
-Volatire
Finally before I conclude, I would like to remind you to observe the Calendar of
events World Population Day on 11th July, World Plastic Surgery Day on 15th
July and World Breast Feeding Week during first week of August. Wish you all a
safe and peaceful professional environment. The theme of this year Doctors' Day is
“Lessen the mortality of COVID-19”. It includes awareness about asymptomatic
hypoxia and early aggressive therapy. We have to learn to live with Corona. So my dear
colleagues, Stay safe and take care.
Long live IMA. - Dr Anita N Rao

President’s Message
Dear esteemed members,
Hiring the technical method for communication will
be the norm in the coming days. Keeping this in view we
conducted the 847th State Working Committee meeting
on 14.06.2020 at Benagaluru in Hybrid manner in which
members attended through both virtually and through
video conferencing.
Amidst the fear of Covid 19 the Doctors day was successfully celebrated at IMA
House Benagaluru on 01-07-2020 in the same Hybrid manner in which
Dr.Sudhakar.K. Minister for Medical Education of Government of Karnataka was the
Chief guest who assured to easy the KPME registration & renewal process.
We had online webinar on the preparedness for the future to face the Covid 19. The
response was overwhelming. I thank the speakers for sharing their wonderful
experience.
The elections for the various posts of IMA KSB are on roll. I request all the braches
to participate in this democratic festival.
The coronavirus pandemic is a test. It’s a test of medical capacity and political will.
It’s a test of endurance and forbearance. It’s a test, too, of a different kind of faith, in
the strength of the ideas humans choose to help them form moral judgments and
guide personal and social behavior. It’s a test of where all humans stand.
What is right and what is wrong? What can individuals expect from society, and
what can society expect of us as medical professionals ? Should others make sacrifices
for me, and vice versa? I hope the lessons we take from our country’s experience with
Covid-19 aren’t about food or avoiding the spread of germs, but about how we treat
the most vulnerable among us. A pandemic is no time to turn our eyes away from the
sanctity of human life. In this regard I request all the district branches to take the
responsibility to establish Corana Care Centers for the health care workers in their
districts. I appreciate IMA branches like Tumakuru and Sirasi who have taken a lead in
this regard.
Long Live IMA - Dr. Madhusudana Kariganur

Celebrating Doctors' Day –
A Tribute to the Healers
Happy Doctors day to all the doctors across Karnataka. 1st
July of every year is celebrated as Doctors' day in the honor of Dr.
B.C. Roy. On this day Doctors are honoured and remembered for their relentless service to
humanity. Doctors day is tribute to all medical professionals who have ethically treated
patients and served the society.
Doctors day was established in India in the year 1991 by Govt. of India. Doctors day is
being celebrated on different dates in different countries. For e.g. in USA it is observed on
March 30th,3rd Dec in Cuba and 23rd August in Iran. In India, it is celebrated on 1st July in
memory of late Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy, the 2nd chief minister of west Bengal, who was a
legendary physician by profession.
He was born on July 1st 1882 and died on same date in 1962, aged 80 years. He was one of
the few people in history, who has obtained FRCS and MRCP degrees simultaneously. The
service he rendered to the society was commendable, and he continued to treat patients in
spite of being Chief Minister. He was honoured with the country's highest civilian award,
Bharath Ratna on Feb 4th 1961 for his selfless and relentless service to the Society.
This year, i.e. 2020, Doctors day carries more importance and relevance because of the
Corona pandemic. Today Doctors are frontline warriors in the war against corona. Our
profession is in cross roads. We are caught in a dilemma about how to manage the situation.
The Novel Corona Virus is on a killing spree all over the world. Many Doctors have been
infected, and a significant number have lost their lives while treating these patients.
Doctors and health care workers are working laboriously for the welfare of the patients to
minimize the damage to society. They not only have to treat the patients but also manage the
nerves and pressures of families and friends. To fulfil this, they are attending the patients in
person and staying connected with the relatives through phone and video calls.
The threat of them catching the disease and infecting their own families also looms large
over them, due to which most of the doctors are staying away from their families. Some of the
young professionals are working 15-19 hours a day.
Day by day, guidelines are changing, treatments are changing and newer modalities are
being introduced. The Medical fraternity faces the challenge of staying up to date. Many of
them are under severe stress and state of depression.
After completing his graduation in Mathematics, B.C.Roy applied for admission in both engineering and
medical colleges. He chose to pursue medical studies in Calcutta Medical College.June - 2020, IMA - FOCUS Page No. 9
In this hot and humid conditions wearing the PPE for more than 6 hours is a nightmare.
They cannot go to toilet, cannot drink water nor eat anything. Communication is a problem.
Some of them have developed blisters over their faces due to the pressure of N95 masks and
protective goggles. Moreover, they have to be very cautious all the time to avoid exposure to
the virus.
If Doctors become positive, they will be sent for isolation. Even otherwise, they have to go
for self-quarantine for 14 days. There is an acute shortage of medical professionals
everywhere. On this Doctors' day we need to appreciate and applaud the frontline Corona
Warriors and give them due recognition for all the work they do against all odds. It is really
hard for them to fight a prolonged battle against this deadly virus, which is highly contagious,
and has no known cure. It is like a war with an invisible enemy who can attack you anywhere
and anytime.
The celebration of Doctors day is an attempt to emphasize the value of Doctors in the
society and to offer them respect for all the things they do to save the lives.
Hope we do get the due recognition in our society and people will stop criticizing,
illtreating, assaulting the doctors and the health care workers in the days to come.
Long live the medical profession,
Long live IMA.

Sword of uncertainty
As the sword of uncertainty dangles over our heads
Holding the pearls of lives in the delicate threads
Each of us transformed into Heroes and Knights
The outlook of the people has changed overnight.
An unseen enemy, and the target uncertain
Tired of numbers growing, and shattered relations.
The sick are attended to without a word uttered
Where the kin won't touch the body at burial either.
Getting miserably exhausted with a new agreement
Accepting to work under a banner of a 'New Normal'
Drowned in our own sweat, that drips relentlessly
And exhaustion shuns our confidence painfully
Applauds and diyas did perform a trivial trick,
It upgraded our image that was already sick.
It hurts us all when the rightful earning is denied
A hungry stomach growled and a pained heart cried.
It is time to recognise the services rendered
As money from pockets goes to the hospital vender
Pray for health of the healer in this time so difficult
You have a soldier waiting to fight the enemy occult
