A more challenging outlook?

While there were more encouraging signs for the Indian economy in the last quarter
of 2013, with growth rebounding slightly, India’s growth rate remained below 5%
throughout the year – far below recent historic levels – and reached its lowest point
for four years in the previous quarter. With half of the country’s population
under 25, economists say the country must grow by at least 8% if it is to generate
enough jobs for the 13 million young people flooding the workforce every year.
At present, however, consistent quarter-on-quarter growth and
a strong economic recovery are far from guaranteed.
