A Message from Seminarian Stephen Rooney
My sisters and brothers,
Peace be with you!
I am writing this column today to thank you - to thank you for these past ten weeks. This
summer you welcomed me into your home. You loved me as one of your own. There was not a
day that went by that multiples of you did not take the time to speak with me and affirm me in
my vocation.
Before the summer began, as I was gr owing near er to diaconate or dination this upcoming fall, wher e I
would make my promises of celibacy and obedience. I knew this summer would be my last chance to back out.
Therefore, while in prayer, I told the Lord if you do not want me to be a priest, please make it very, very clear to
me this summer. My sisters and brothers, instead, our Lord continued to affirm His call to me to come and follow
Him and to be His priest. To the parishioners of Infant Jesus, I thank you for this. To be able to journey with you
this summer was a true gift and made me ever more excited to serve the Lord very soon as His priest.
To end this column, I want to shar e with you a r eflection I offer ed to our Som ething 4 Seniors group this
past week.
In the 1988 Summer Olympics, Der r ick Redmond was the finest spr inter of Gr eat Br itain, and held the
fastest time in the 400M. He trained his whole life to get to this point. But before his race began, he tore his
achilles. He was devastated. During those next four years, he had 8 surgeries, and trained for nearly 10 hours a day
to get back into Olympic shape. In 1992, Derrick Redmond not only made it back to the Olympics, but going into
the semi-finals, he had the fastest time in the world. Derrick Redmond was preparing to take home the Gold
Medal. And as the race began, he was off to a great start, after the first turn, half way into the first straight away,
he tore his hamstring, his body buckled up, and he fell to the ground, while all of the runners passed him. After all
that work, he failed again. But he got up and started hobbling. And then from the distance, you see a man running
from the stands, passing the security, onto the track. It's Derrick’s father. His father takes his son’s arm and puts it
around his shoulder and they walk together to the finish line. If you were one of the 65,000 people in that stadium
or have seen a clip of that race, you would see Derrick crying on his father’s shoulder. You would see the ushers
trying to escort them off the track, but his father won't allow it, waving them off, telling them we are going to
finish.
As Derrick’s father drew near to his son, our heavenly Father dr aws near to you. My sister s and br other s,
all our heavenly Father wants is to be with you. All He wants is to reveal to you how much He loves you. My
sisters and brothers, you have no idea how much He loves you, how much He cares for and cherishes you. My last
request from you is to open yourself up to the infinite love the Father has for YOU. If you are thinking to yourself
how the heck do I do this? I offer two very simple steps to take. First, spend some time in Eucharistic adoration. It
is there that you simply sit in front of our Eucharistic Lord - you look at Him and He looks at you. We recall our
Savior’s words, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” There you spend time with the One who loves you.
We have Eucharistic Adoration every Friday in the Chapel after the 12 PM Mass until 7 PM. Please try to spend
some quality time with the One who loves you infinitely.
Lastly, another way I have experienced the love the Father has for me is ever y time I go to the Sacr ament of
Reconciliation. Recently, I went to this sacrament and the priest, who is a friend of mine, told me that soon I will
be on the other side of the screen, so it is so important that I experience the love the Father has for me. He told me
so little of the sacrament is about about our sins, that is the minor part; the major part of the sacrament is allowing
the Father to love you, allowing His Son to forgive you, and to be reconciled with them. I came out of the
sacrament and went to the Chapel to pray, and I could not stop repeating these two words to the Father - thank
you; thank you; thank you.
My sisters and brothers, our heavenly Father desir es to love you. Let Him.

The staff and parishioners of Infant Jesus Parish wish to thank Fr. John I. Cervini for his pastoral spirit and
words of inspiration last weekend. Together with Deacon Mike Byrne, they spoke to us about the
Diocesan Mission to the Dominican Republic.
Thanks to the benevolence of our parish, more than
$7000 was raised to benefit this worthy cause!!!
GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
More than 30 years ago, Bishop John R. McGann responded to a call for help from Bishop Conners from the Diocese of San Juan de la
Maguana in the Dominican Republic. He committed the spiritual, personnel and financial resources of the
Diocese of Rockville Centre to a parish located in a remote part of the Dominican Republic. Why ?
Because thousands of people were unable to celebrate Mass and receive the sacraments. There was no priest to minister to them.
Unfortunately, the mission donations today have been frozen by the lawyers since the Diocese hass applied for bankruptcy in NY State.
The freeze has stopped funding for the great projects and support of Fr. Francisco de la Rosa, the pastor of San Pedro Apostol, and Joanne
Peterson, their community organizer. Parish administration bill are piling up along with health and education needs, and agriculture
struggles. The retreat center has be closed. Your support so critical, and the mission is desperate.
If you are in a position to help with a donation, now is the time!
How can you make a donation under these unusual circumstances? Make your check payable to: St. Paul the Apostle and designate
it for the El Cercado Mission in the DR. The pastor of St. Paul’s will cash it and send you a thank you for your US tax deduction. He will
convert monies collected to one check made to San Pedro Apostol in El Cercado. Each month, Deacon Ray D’Alessio of St. Paul’s will place
the donations in a Fedex International account envelope to be sent to Santo Domingo, and when received,
Joanne Peterson with deposit your donation in a parish account in Santo Domingo.
You can still send your donation to:

Article #88 by Phil Griffith
The Archdiocese for the Military Services was founded by His Holiness Pope Paul II on July 1, 1986. The present Pastor
is the Most Reverend Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio. There are 1.8 million Catholics in the military services. Twenty-
five percent of the armed forces are Catholic and 67% of the military chaplains are Catholic. The military also has four
Auxiliary Bishops. Their funding includes 59% from the general public, 28% from Clergy, their families and military
personnel and 13% from foundations like the Knights of Columbus.
Catholic Chaplains have served in war and peace beginning with the 1848 Mexican American War. All Chaplains served
honorably. There are some worthy of particular note. The first Chaplain, Fr. John McElroy SJ, founder of Boston
College, Emmeron M. Bliemel, first killed in action, Fr. Joseph T. Callahan, Medal of Honor winner, Fr. John P.
Washington, one of four Chaplains who gave up their life jackets on the sinking SS Dorchester, and Fr. William F.
Davitt, K of C member and the last American killed in WWI.
