Message from the School Council Chair
New Strategic Plan for Samford State School Values
2020-2023 By now most of you would have already seen our new school
At the last School Council meeting for Term 2, the School Council values which are depicted in the colourful values wheel below:
voted to ratify the new 2020–2023 Strategic Plan for Samford State
School.
Over the last 12 months, the School Council has worked closely
with the school leadership team to finalise this new Strategic Plan.
We wish to thank the staff, parents, community members and most
importantly our students who contributed to create this new
strategic plan. Thank you – without your valuable input, we would
not have been able to create a new plan which is truly reflective of
the needs and aspirations of our students. Please click here to

Spell-a-thonStudent Leader Project - School Values
Student Leader Values Project
Every year, our Student Leaders lead a project across the
school year. This year the goal we have chosen is to build
our school culture through our 5 values.
One of the ways we are doing this is through a ’ticket
system’. Students can earn ’values tickets’ by being
spotted demonstrating one of the values. The tickets are
collected each week and we are working towards a goal of
earning 7000 tickets. When we have earnt 7000 tickets,
there will be a celebration event for everyone!
Take a look at the Student Leader Values Project in action here!

Values Wheel - Growth Mindset
Growth Mindset - Strength from Struggles
Nobody likes to struggle. To struggle with something feels uncomfortable and stressful. We
especially don’t like to watch our children struggle. As parents it can feel instinctive to want to
protect our children from suffering. We often want to jump in with a solution to their problems or
quickly distract them away from any feelings of uneasiness or distress. Yet allowing our children to
experience struggle and to help them accept that failure, disappointment and discomfort are all a
normal part of our lives and can help prepare them for life’s challenges.
Whenever we step in too quickly to give the answer or solve a problem, we rob our children of the
opportunity to build their own coping skills as well as a sense of self-competence in dealing with
challenges. After all, our most powerful learning happens when we are being challenged.
Challenges prompt us to strive harder to build our knowledge, skills and resilience.
Ideas on accepting struggle and taking on challenges
Let it be OK to not feel OK. Remind your child that it’s normal to feel uneasy or worried when faced with a problem. These
feelings don’t hurt us and in time they will pass.
Let them make mistakes. Allow your child to make their own mistakes. Ask yourself, ‘If I don’t help my child, what is the worst
that could happen?’ OR ‘If I step in and fix this, what learning will my child miss out on?’
Set challenges. Seek out opportunities for your child to have more independence and to stretch themselves. Set
appropriate challenges for your child like sending them to the bakery to place the order and pay or allowing them to walk to the park
down the road with their friends. If we are always hovering and supervising our children they won’t get the chance to think for
themselves.
Talk about failure. We often ask our children about their day at school and ask about what they learned or what they did at
play time. Try asking them what they failed at. Share your own failings with them too. This might feel difficult at first but the idea is
to help them accept that failure is a normal part of life and not something we have to hide away from or avoid.

Book Week
Theme: Curious Creatures, Wild Minds
Date: 7–11 September 2020 (Week 9) - the official Book Week celebrations have
been postponed to 17–23 October 2020 this year, however we will be celebrating
earlier.
The annual CBCA Book of the Year Awards aim to:
• promote quality literature for young Australians;
• support and encourage a wide range of Australian writers and illustrators of children’s books and;
• celebrate contributions to Australian children’s literature.
In the lead up to Book Week, students will be exploring the shortlisted books nominated in 4 of the Book of the Year categories.
In each newsletter, we will feature the shortlisted titles for each of the categories. Our first one being: Early Childhood
As the official Book Week celebrations have been postponed to 17–23 October 2020, there will be no formal announcement of
the winning books until Friday 16 October 2020. Instead we’ll announce our Samford winners during our Book Week
celebrations.
We have an exciting programme planned for Book Week 2020. Here’s a sample of what is on offer:
Family Competition - Students and their families are asked to create a curious creature using their “Wild Minds”. Full details
of this fabulous competition will be posted in the next issue of Iron Bark Press.
Read In/Book Character Dress-up Day - Buddy classes team up to read together on one afternoon during Book Week.
Dress up as your favourite book character and be inspired by the curious creatures that surround you.
Prize Packs - These are displayed in the Library from the end of Week 3. Children earn tickets leading up to and during
Book Week by participating in a variety of activities. The above activities are a great way for students to earn tickets.
Happy reading everyone!

Sunsets and Sunrises
If you haven’t heard, my time as Technologies Ambassador came to an end last term. I am back on class Thursdays and Fridays (Class
3D) and doing iPad management Wednesdays 12:30-3:00pm. The reason is to support pedagogical needs across the school, using
available funds.
As the sun sets on my time as Technologies Ambassador, I think back over the distance we’ve travelled as a school. I am proud of Us…of
the way we’ve come together and journeyed as a team.
Many, many things spring to mind; here’s a few of them: improving access to technologies to support learning (devices in classrooms),
organising devices so they update and work, creating the infrastructure for future growth, the iPad program (to enhance learning
opportunities and remove barriers to learning), and the co-teaching program.
I sincerely thank you for the part you’ve played (and continue to play) in our successes. I’m humbled from the opportunities we’ve had
working together.
This will affect Connected Learning newsletter articles.
iPad Program 2020
Last term, families nominated options regarding enabling the App Store on devices. This gives families greater options with devices
outside of school hours. We are trialling this with the Year 4 cohort.
This term, I am working on making these choices happen during my iPad management time (Wednesdays 12:30-3:00pm).
Minecraft Tournament 2020
Through a study of navigation, exploration and/or trade (sources), students come to learn about
Australia’s early colonisation and develop understandings about contact between societies
(continuity and change, cause and effect) and its effects on people and their environments
(perspectives, empathy) (ACARA).
Successful Year 4
applicants have started
working in pairs to depict
the Port Jackson
environments of the First Australians and British Colonists. They
build Minecraft creations, using accurate historical detail. This may
include First Fleet ships, buildings and tents in the colonial
settlement and the environment of the Gadigal people of the Eora
Nation, to mention a few examples.
This is an opportunity for students to learn about the impact
European settlement had on the First Australians. We can learn
from the past to develop Kindness, Respect, Citizenship, Curiosity
and a Growth Mindset.
Each student pair codes in the same Minecraft world. Qualifying
students work on their creations each Thursday in the Library
Seminar Room, supervised by myself, plus outside of school
hours. This is an extra-curricular tournament.
All the best and take care,
Justin Marchesi

Vacation Care Fun!
What an amazing Vacation Care we had!!! We happily stuffed our warm animal hats to keep our heads
warm this winter, we indulged in some pretty amazing foods cooked on MasterChef day and then we
experimented our way through Science Day.
Bikes and Wheels Day was a hit with two different courses running throughout the day; this day is always
a popular one here at OSHC. Freaky Friday brought us some crazy hair do’s, eyeball cookies and lots of
sticky slime!
As we try to become more environmentally aware, we delved into the world of bees wax wraps and each
child was able to create their own to take home and use. Even though it sprinkled with rain, we still went
ahead with our Connection to Country Day, where we yarned around the fire about caring for Country and we will use the children’s words
to create our own Acknowledgement to Country that we will use in nature space.
We also planted a grove of trees that were kindly donated by our families; these are part of our stage one re-vegetation project we are
conducting in this space.
