 1 WHAT IS
         PROFUTURO?

ProFuturo is an education program launched in 2016 by Telefónica Foundation and "La Caixa"
Banking Foundation, whose mission is to narrow the education gap in the world by providing quality
digital education for children in vulnerable environments in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and
Asia. In line with Goal 4 of the United Nations' 2030 sustainable development agenda on access to
equitable and inclusive quality education for all, ProFuturo aspires to become a world reference for
transformation and innovation in education, improving the education of millions of children through
technology.

The hallmarks of ProFuturo, one of the largest digital education initiatives in the world, are quality,
sustainability over time, and access to all corners of the world, whether in urban, rural or remote
areas or conflict zones. To achieve this, its education solution can be adapted to any environment
and context both with and without an Internet connection. The ultimate aim is to deliver the best
education to 10 million children in vulnerable areas by 2020, and to 25 million by 2030.

                                                                                                     3

This proposal has a universal vocation and incorporates, in an interrelated way, technologies,
educational resources and teaching-learning methodologies designed to empower teachers and
provide students with training in skills and competences for their personal and professional future.

ProFuturo has been an educational laboratory from the start, offering an innovative, personalized
and flexible education proposal based on the accumulated experience of Fundación Telefónica,
which for over ten years has been working on social intervention programs with children in
vulnerable environments in Latin America. Since 2012, 3.8 million children have benefited from the
Telefónica Foundation's projects, mainly in Latin America. ProFuturo, in collaboration with "La Caixa"
Banking Foundation, reached a total of 5.8 million child beneficiaries by the end of 2017.

ProFuturo is a universal education program built on robust partnerships. ProFuturo seeks
agreements with local agents to implement the program in each country, as well as with international
companies, institutions and agents who support the initiative on a grand scale. ProFuturo opens the
door to institutions, organizations or companies –public or private– who want to join the initiative,
with the aim of recruiting the cooperation of an ever greater number of entities each year to work
toward improving education in vulnerable areas.

ProFuturo has signed partnership agreements with over 60 local, national and international partners.

                                                                                                    4

1.1 ProFuturo's vision
This ambitious initiative is underpinned by two major institutions, Telefónica Foundation and "La
Caixa" Banking Foundation, who decided to join forces and pool their experience in the world of
education to give children from vulnerable environments access to a quality educational experience
and to work to offer equality of opportunity to every child.

Both institutions are leaders known for their social work in the education sector, and collaborate to
improve education around the world, guided by the absolute conviction that digital education has
the power to narrow the education gap, reduce poverty and improve people's lives.

Providing access to quality education is a worldwide challenge, and is
enshrined in the fourth sustainable development goal (SDG 4):
The need for expanding education is now more necessary than ever before,
which is why, with their work through ProFuturo, Telefónica Foundation and
"La Caixa" Banking Foundation devote all their experience to transforming
education in the most vulnerable environments. They are doing this through
digital education. Technology offers the opportunity to reach more people in
less time, and to adapt and personalize the teaching to each learning
             environment.

The vulnerability associated with the digital divide increases the risk of
exclusion. The latest UNICEF report on the "2017 State of the World's
Children" alerts to the risk of the digital divide in childhood:
“If leveraged in the right way and made universally accessible, digital
technology can be a game changer for children being left behind – whether
because of poverty, race, ethnicity, gender, disability, displacement or
geographic isolation – connecting them to a world of opportunity and
providing them with the skills they need to succeed in a digital world. But
unless we expand access, digital technology may create new divides that
prevent children from fulfilling their potential”. The work of ProFuturo in
Latin America, Africa and Asia since July 2016 has focused on combating this
             educational and digital divide.

                                                                                                   5

Telefónica Foundation and "La Caixa" Banking Foundation, committed to education

   Telefónica Foundation
Telefónica Foundation is one of the world's leading investors in digital education. It has been
working in Latin America for over 12 years to offer better opportunities to children through
quality digital education. In 2005, it launched the Proniño initiative in order to eradicate
poverty in the most vulnerable areas. This initiative provided education to half a million child
laborers and collaborated with their families, schools and communities to improve their
    situation.

Telefónica Foundation and Telefónica have extensive experience in the field of education and
over 600 education experts. They have developed numerous projects to contribute to training
students, teachers and families and to encourage entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation
in education. Some of these recent projects include Aulas Fundación Telefónica, Entre Profes,
Escuelas Creativas and Transformación de Escuelas in Latin America. Thanks to this
experience, contents, methodologies and good practices have been incorporated into the
ProFuturo program so that they can be rolled out in schools in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

   “La Caixa” Banking Foundation
"La Caixa" Banking Foundation is the leading Spanish foundation in social investment and one
of the major foundations worldwide. Through its Obra Social program, it dedicates a large part
of its overall budget to helping the most vulnerable groups, particularly children, placing a big
focus on education. It has active international projects in Latin America and Africa in countries
like Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Egypt, Burundi and Kenya.

Its commitment to education is developed through different lines: socio-educational actions,
promotion of young talent and educational actions. In the socio-educational sphere, it has
carried out programs such as CaixaProinfancia since 2007, aimed at households with children
from 0 to 16 years of age in vulnerable situations. The objective of this program is to break
the cycle of poverty through pro-education and health services. In 2016, 63,600 children were
served. In addition, since 1982, with the aim of promoting young talent, "la Caixa" Banking
Foundation annually announces a scholarship program aimed at students who wish to extend
their training by completing postgraduate studies. Since its inception, 4,350 scholarships have
been granted to complete PhDs in Spain, in research centers of excellence, and abroad
(Europe, North America or Asia). Finally, through EduCaixa it promotes rigorous and quality
educational actions aimed at the holistic development of students, teachers and principals in
order to promote the transformation and improvement of education; in line with Goal 4 of
the United Nations' 2030 sustainable development agenda to ensure inclusive and equitable
quality education for all. In 2017, EduCaixa’s initiative benefited more than 2.3 million children
and around 10,000 educational centers participated in the project.

Annually, "la Caixa" Banking Foundation promotes more than 50,000 initiatives, of which close
   to 11 million people benefit.

                                                                                                        6

 2 PROFUTURO'S
         EDUCATION PROPOSAL

2.1 What is our education proposal?
We live in an increasingly digital world where most of the jobs of the future do not even exist today,
and where the two keys to a country's development are innovation and education. Aware of this
reality, ProFuturo has launched a digital education program so teachers can develop their skills and
be capable of providing the best education to the children in their classroom.

The teaching model is personalized, modular and flexible, can be implemented in any vulnerable
environment (conflict zones, or in remote, poor or rural areas) –regardless of whether they have an
Internet connection– and can be adapted to each school and country.

The key to the program is teacher training. ProFuturo trains teachers in the use of digital tools, helps
them improve their 21st Century skills and invites them to promote collaborative work so as to
create a vast international network of schools that teach, learn and share knowledge, thus breaking
down the “classroom walls”.

ProFuturo's proposal involves all the educational agents: school principals and teachers, students
and families, as well as other social, educational and institutional agents, to ensure the program is
sustainable over time, has the broadest possible scope and is accessible to everyone. It has also
established various processes to measure and assess the impacts of continuous improvement so it
can be effectively adapted and replicated in different schools.

                                                                                                      9
INFORMATION DOSSIER

2.2 Aspects of the education proposal
The hallmarks of ProFuturo's proposal, one of the largest digital education initiatives today are:
quality, sustainability over time, and access to all corners of the world, whether in urban, rural or
remote areas or conflict zones. To achieve this, its education solution is modular and can be adapted
to any context regardless of Internet connectivity.

ProFuturo's education proposal is defined as:

   A. An Integrated Solution for Digital Education:
ProFuturo is an all-round solution that integrates a series of digital learning experiences for
elementary-school aged children, itineraries for teachers' professional development and a
system for continuous assessment and impact measurement.

Its main focus is to improve the quality of education in vulnerable environments through the
digital factor, with a twofold objective: to improve teachers' expertise at the techno-pedagogical
level and to promote meaningful learning in students, based on increasing their motivation
   through digital learning experiences.

The program also considers the school to be an environment that facilitates inclusive learning,
with the aim of overcoming the challenges facing education in the 21st century.

   B. Based on continuous assessment, personalized learning, and impact evaluation:
ProFuturo has developed learning analytics tools using algorithms and Big Data to collect results
on the use of the solution and measure its impact. This system for analyzing and measuring results
means decisions can be made on how best to develop the solution in terms of contents,
methodologies and operational deployment, and to predict new scenarios. The system also offers
continuous feedback on students’ learning and allows teachers to personalize their students'
   education through specific applications.

ProFuturo has launched a “Teacher Assistant” app, which uses prescriptive analytics to detect on
a daily basis whether a child is falling behind so lessons can be adapted to meet their needs.
Similarly, more challenges can be given to children who are ahead to keep them engaged and
   interested in learning.

   C. Online and offline:
The solution works in all types of environments, and provides the same learning experience
whether it is online or offline.

                                                                                                  10
INFORMATION DOSSIER

D. Adaptable to the local context:
Its excellent flexibility allows it to be adapted to the local context and to each teacher's profile,
enabling them to follow their own personalized training itineraries and encouraging them to
create their own contents.

It also promotes agreements with governments and relevant educational institutions in each
country to ensure the convergence between the national curricula and ProFuturo's digital
content.

E. Modular:
ProFuturo assesses the resources available at the school then offers a solution that is specially
tailored to the school's needs. The program can thus be deployed in:

 Schools without equipment or Internet connection: ProFuturo sends a mobile digital
           classroom with equipment and software.

 Schools with equipment and Internet connection: ProFuturo uses the existing
equipment to install its software: a teaching platform and digital resources for
           students.

 Schools with some components: ProFuturo provides the necessary software and
equipment complementing the material that is already available in the school.

F. Local service
ProFuturo's deployment model includes: diagnostics, in-person training, local resources for
implementation and technical support.

                                                                                                  11
INFORMATION DOSSIER

2.3. What does the Digital Education Solution consist of?
ProFuturo offers a series of digital experiences for the classroom focused on the skills, values and
capabilities that are part of a well-rounded education. The aim is to offer teachers the opportunity
to incorporate digital resources into their teaching programs. All this takes place through a single
interface that can be accessed from any environment and device.

The solution includes:

   A. A set of digital experiences for the classroom that enable:

 The development of knowledge and skills linked to the 21st Century curriculum: with
particular attention to the areas of linguistics and STEAM (science, technology, arts and
mathematics) and to life skills (learning how to learn, citizenship, etc.).

 The development of 21st Century competences such as digital literacies, communication
skills, teamwork, creativity, ability to listen, problem-solving and decision-making.

   B. Professional development itineraries for teachers
Teachers are key players in the educational process. The professional development itineraries
itineraries help teachers gain knowledge of the digital tools and contents, learn new skills and
methodologies, and incorporate what they have learnt to their lessons.

ProFuturo offers blended training (traditional face-to-face training with computer-based
modules). The training is conducted through a cascade model that involves coordination between
ProFuturo teams and local entities. The teacher receives continuous support through the figure
of a coordinator, who periodically offers advice for any problem that may arise, in order to avoid
the teacher becoming demotivated and abandoning the solution.

2.3.1 Content of the digital experiences for the classroom

The content serves as a complement to the local curriculum: the digital activities are easy to
integrate because they cover knowledge, skills and attitudes; they are dynamic because they adapt
to the student's personal growth; they are transferable because they are applicable to different real-
life contexts; and they are interdisciplinary and functional, as the aim is to ensure students can access
professional opportunities.

The contents come in four languages: Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.

However, the flexibility of ProFuturo’s education platform allows Departments of Education, local
education partners and teachers to upload local contents and promote the local mother tongue as a
language of instruction at primary education level.

                                                                                                      12
INFORMATION DOSSIER

 A. Design and structure
The proposed activities have been designed based on an analysis of the content and structure
of the curricula in various countries so as to offer the broadest possible compatibility. This means
that the teachers can select what to work on with their students based on the curriculum in their
own country and on their students' needs.

The contents include the main curricular materials in elementary school for two age ranges:
children between the ages of 5 and 7 and between the ages of 8 and 12. Additionally, ProFuturo
is working on developing specific content for children with special needs.

The system includes 1,800 hours of content divided into 138 teaching units in each language.
Each teaching unit comprises different digital resources and activities that develop a group of
concepts in a particular knowledge area. All units share a structure that teachers can adapt,
allowing them to personalize student learning.

 B. Content endorsement (examples and milestones)

   C. Methodology:
Students' learning experience and different teaching styles have been taken into account when
creating the digital resources. Learning can be adapted to students’ stage of development and
pace. The subject matter has been prepared by focusing on meaningful learning, considering
   students' experience and educational background.

Through processes of analysis and synthesis, and using a variety of resources and activities, the
conceptual content is specially designed for each student with the aim of achieving deep
learning. The students begin with general concepts and advance toward more specific subjects,
not only so they can understand the basic concepts, but so that they can develop attitudes and
behaviors that are aligned with the study matter.

The method is inspired by a non-linear pedagogy that seeks new ways of accessing knowledge.
It is promotes critical thinking and active learning, as opposed to memory-based learning. This
focus is derived from an interdisciplinary and applied perspective that integrates knowledge from

The multimedia resources and activities are designed to give students an active role in the
teaching process; in other words, applying the principle of "learning by doing", where learning is
achieved through practice. Students' involvement motivates them to learn, and leads to a greater
acquisition of knowledge, values and skills.

We also work with other actors who offer methods for developing problem-solving skills (in areas
such as mathematics), based on the latest research from cognitive science and educational
   psychology.

2.3.2 Professional development itineraries for teachers

Our training model uses a blended modality approach (traditional face-to-face training with
computer-based modules) and comprises hardware, software, content and measurement tools. It
adapts to the teacher's professional development and maximizes their teaching capabilities and
technological appropriation, based on the following pedagogical trends:

 Level of methodological skill: to create an effective digital learning environment, it is
essential to equip teachers with innovative teaching methodologies.

 Level of technological appropriation: leveraging ICT in the classroom depends on teachers’
level of digital appropriation and ability to create meaningful educational experiences using
ICTs. ProFuturo offers training to improve teachers’ digital appropriation taking into account
       their current skills level.

ProFuturo’s training covers the skills described in the “Digital Competence Framework for Citizens”.

 3 PARTNERS
ProFuturo’s sustainability model is based on a roubust ecosystem of public-private partnerships that
will ensure the long-term operation of ProFuturo’s digital education solution. Thus, ProFuturo
leverages on multi-stakeholder partnerships with organizations like UNESCO, and with partners on
the field such as World Vision, Save the Children and Entreculturas, who support the implementation
of the initiative in various countries.

ProFuturo also has the support of the Pontifical University of Salamanca and the University of Los
Andes in developing the tools that measure the initiative’s results and impact.

Locally, ProFuturo works with a partnership model at three levels. An implementation plan is
designed with ProFuturo’s partners after identifying the key local stakeholders working in education
as well as local capabilities and resources.

          DIRECTLY WITH GOVERNMENTS
In some regions, ProFuturo has signed agreements with governments to
adapt the content in line with the aims of the national curriculum, and thus
obtain their validation and certification (for example in Latin America).

WITH GOVERNMENTS THROUGH A LOCAL PARTNER
ProFuturo’s model is implemented through collaborators on the field who
have ample experience working with government. These partners may be
NGOs, associations or other local institutions. These collaborators will have
previously worked with the government and are capacitated to serve as
mediators and offer ProFuturo a favorable foundation for launching its
          initative (for example in Kenya).

          WITH A LOCAL PARTNER
In this case the local partner has achieved recognition by officials of
government in the area of education and can advise on how to introduce
and adapt ProFuturo's proposals to the local characteristics (for example in
          Tanzania).

                                                                                                 18
