Do you agree?
• M2M applications are largely happy with 2G

• LTE (4G) devices are too expensive for M2M

• LTE is mainly promoted with bandwidth and speed benefits

Press Release June 11, 2014
LTE throughput leader Nokia sets world record with SK Telecom of
close to 4 Gbps using TDD-FDD carrier aggregation
Aggregates 10 carriers to reach 200 MHz of spectrum
Demonstrates unmatched speed with commercial Nokia Flexi Multiradio
10 Base Station
Espoo, Finland – Nokia and SK Telecom have again demonstrated the
unparalleled benefits of converging the TDD and FDD LTE spectrum. By
aggregating 10 spectrum frequencies allocated for both LTE variants for a
massive 200 MHz of bandwidth, Nokia and SK Telecom reached a
throughput speed of 3.78 Gbps. At this speed, a mobile broadband user
can download a full-length 5 GB high-definition (HD) movie in just 11
seconds.

Why 2G is still widely used in M2M?
Price of a module 500k/year:
    • 2G / ~ 10$
    • 3G / ~ 25$
    • 4G / ~ 50$+
Additional BOM components needed for 4G
Proven technology and design confidence
No need for bandwidth
No eco-system constraint
Available 2G networks everywhere
Fully amortized 2G networks
…

LTE Benefits for M2M
• It is commerically around since 2+ years = mature
• Stable and high bandwidth performance in motion/mobile
• Low latency allows real time applications
• QoS is possible
  – Differentiated services, costing, priorities
• Highly efficient network reducing overhead = cost
  – Cost to handle one MB is less than half vs. 2G
  – Speed to handle a message is 4 times higher than UMTS
• Occupying less resources on the network
• Will be around for the next decade and more

                                                            Proprietary and Confidential 15
LTE Limitations for M2M
• Lack of solid LTE coverage in Europe
  – Always fallback to 3G or 2G is needed to ensure connection
  – In many cases it doesn‘t make sense for the application
• 40+ frequencies offered globally
  – Band combination is very complex to manage
  – Challenging power consumption
• Always have to pay for high speed and technology accumulation

                                                                 Proprietary and Confidential 16

LTE > LTE-A
• Key enhancement is carrier aggregation
• Base to reach 1GB/s DL speeds
• Limit is 100 Mhz bandwidth
• Non-adjacent frequency allocations

• Handsets already becoming available
• M2M/IoT solutions expected in 2016

• Interest today:
  PC-OEM in 2015 / automotive industry 2017/18 launch platforms

• Benefit for user: ?

                                                       Proprietary and Confidential 18
LTE > 5G
• More than just throughput
  – Further network efficiency & intelligence
  – Converged fiber-wireless networks
  – Further all IP integration
• Looking at 2020 commercial availability
• At the 5G World Summit:
  – Dan Warren GSMA: "Only six percent are connected through an LTE network. That
will be 28 percent by 2020. To get to that point, the expectation is that will be drive by a
capex of $1.17 trillion. Do we really want to commit to another round of capex on 5G?“
  – Ralf Irmer, Senior Manager at Vodafone, arguing 5G was critical for driving better
reliability and better latency in networks.
  – Paul Ceely, EE's Head of Network Strategy, said one of the main 5G use cases
would be for industrial and professional use, whether it is logistics or in transport.

                                                                            Proprietary and Confidential 19
LTE-M Cat 0 to substitute 2G
• Lower cost CATegory 0 (56% cost saving compared to CAT 1)
  – Slower speed Max 1 Mbps UL/DL Data channel
  – Half duplex FDD
  – Mobility should be fully supported
• Coverage Enhancement (CE) Capability
  – Designed to Improve coverage by 15 dB  deep in-building penetration
  – Designed for ~stationary UE’s
  – Will require more network resources (i.e. cost/bit will be higher)
• Deep low power
  – Added new “Off” like power state but NW context is stored
  – Increase LTE sleep from max 2.5sec to ~15min
  – 100x power consumption improvement
• Goodies
  – Device-to-Device connectivity (like Mesh networks)
  – Deployment in unlicensed bands

                                                                         Proprietary and Confidential 20
