January is National Blood Donor Month, a time to celebrate the
lifesaving impact of blood and platelet donors. It has been celebrated
each January for nearly 50 years and coincides with one of the most
difficult times to maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients and this
                                       year is no exception.

2021! WOW!

My - how time flies, we rode out a rough year in 2020 with a lot of changes. Changes to the way we live
our lives, how we interact with each other, the daily struggles of going to work even to how we shop for
groceries have changed – UP one isle DOWN the other side. Social distancing? I had never heard that term
before 2020. We watched on TV, other countries wearing mask, even a few people in the USA wearing mask
prior to 2020 but it was rare. Now here we are – it’s a normal everyday occurrence for us. Our children &
grandchildren are growing up in a totally different NORMAL world than we did.

When I was in school, every pick-up truck in the parking lot had a least a 22-rifle hanging in a gun rack,
none of the windows were rolled up & every boy over the age of 8 had a pocketknife – none of this was scary
or questioned, it was expected. Now I can’t even go through all the changes we have made to our way of life
because it might offend someone or be considered an act of aggression, hate speech or insensitive.

I wish we could get back to living life, being good to each other because we are all human beings. Over
the past month, we had the opportunity to go on an overnight trip to the Keys New Year’s Day with a group of
people. Getting to know them on another level other than just “riding buddies” or “chapter members”. It’s
amazing when listening to the stories of how they began riding & what it means to them. Funny, you might
think there is some incredible inspirational story behind everyone’s experience of – how the clouds opened up
& this enlightening feeling came overcame their mind body & soul. LOL. That wasn’t what I took away from
those stories & certainly wasn’t my experience either.

I ride my motorcycle because I enjoy it, I can focus on the road, the scenery around me, there person in
front of, behind & to either side of me. It is the feeling that I ride with people who are having some of the
same thoughts I’m having. The relaxing sensation of freedom.

Welcome to 2021! I hope to get to know everyone a little better this year. I hope to share with road with all
of you this year.

 Thank you! Randy

                                                                                Barkman,
                                                                                Assistant Director

Well, here we are in the New Year, the first weekend was a good time riding to the keys. Thanks
to all who attended. Riding across the bridges in the keys is one of the most beautiful rides you can do
in Florida. Here’s looking forward to many enjoyable and safe rides this year.

Also, I’d like to thank all the members who have started logging miles in the RIDE 365 program.
To those who haven’t turned in your miles yet just stop by any Harley Davidson Dealer and have them
recorded. Then periodically have the dealer log your miles and we can see where our chapter stands in
this national and regional contest.

On another note, remember to give me your mileage for our chapter mileage recognition awards.

Now for something new we’ve been talking about, the BINGO Challenge, 2021. We’ve decided to make
this a fund raiser for the Chapter with a 50/50 drawing at the end of this event. Each member will get
one Bingo Card for $5.00. Each member will get one entry for each bingo they attain. Fill the card and
that gives you 12 entries. We’re also awarding points for participation in this event. The first person to
turn in a BINGO will earn 2 points and the first person to fill the entire card will earn 25 points. Each
person will earn 1 point for each BINGO and each person to fill a card will earn 10 points.
This event will start on Sunday, January 31, 2021 and will end on March 28, 2021.
On Sunday, 01-31-21, we will be at Lakeland HD from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for you to pick-up your
BINGO CARD. If you cannot make it there let me know and I can meet you at another time or email a
card to you. I hope this provides a lot of fun riding for everyone.

Thank-you & Ride Safe,
Hop / Wayne Barkman

Mark Miley,
                                                                              Treasurer

Riding In Adverse Weather
One of the perks of belonging to the national Harley Owners Group (I mean, other than the ability
to belong to our local chapter and get to ride with great folks like us!) is an automatic subscription to
The Enthusiast, formerly HOG Magazine. Each month, the editors include many fascinating articles
concerning what is going on with chapters around the world, information on the Ride 365 program with
great ideas for rides, and important safety and mechanical tips for us riders.
But how many of you take the time to flip through The Enthusiast?
In the most recent issue, there was an excellent article by Mike Zimmerman titled “Skills for
Rough Weather Riding.” And, for those of us who went on the recent rides to Fernandina Beach, the
Rudolph Round-Up, and the annual Christmas Lights ride, you know we have certainly not missed our
opportunities to practice these skills.
But bad weather in Florida can mean more than just rain. About the only weather event we
don’t have to deal with (outside of once in my lifetime) is snow. But we are definitely a virtual
smorgasbord of just about every other negative meteorological event you can think of. In addition to
the “liquid sunshine” we’ve already mentioned, we have to contend with wind, cold, and our (in)famous
heat and humidity. As Zimmerman points out, however, the proper preparations can help you to tackle
any of these more safely. Let’s take a look at some of the tips offered by Mike in his article (hopefully
without plagiarizing!).
Rain
Let’s face it. At some point, we’re all going to get caught in the rain on our bikes. But being
properly prepared can make all of the difference between a level of comfort with your unpredicted
situation and one of those “white knuckle rides” we heard about in motor school.
One of the first things we can do is make sure that our motorcycles are mechanically sound and,
when it comes to wet roads, the most important aspect of this is TIRES. Certainly, you always want to
make sure you have good tires on your bike, but the proper tread is paramount to ensuring safety on
wet roads. The correct tread depth allows the water to be displaced properly and gives you the traction
January 2021 - Polk County HOG 3877
necessary to navigate. Also, WHEN it rains and WHERE you ride both have a potential impact on your
safety.
If it has already been raining for some time when you have to set out, you may actually be a bit
safer when it comes to the road conditions. Roads tend to be more slippery earlier on in a rain, as oils
and greases that have built up on the asphalt (that’s the “Macadam” for any of you born before 1960)
are being lifted from the surface and washed away. As for the “where,” these oils and greases are
normally most prevalent toward the middle of the lane, so you may want to ride in position 1 or 3, away
from the center position 2 (see the comments in the section on wind below). Also, keep in mind that
manhole covers, bridge grating, and the painted lines on the road and in crosswalks (especially
crosswalks, where the paint is normally wider and thicker) become extra-slick when they are wet.
In addition to your bike, there are things you can do to make yourself safer when having to ride
in wet conditions. Make sure you have a good quality rain suit handy at all times in your saddlebags.
Boot covers can also be helpful to avoid getting your feet soaked. A good pair of goggles can also be of
benefit. As I personally experienced recently, not only is rain on your glasses an impediment, the rain
can wash the sweat from your forehead down into your eyes and blind you.
Most importantly, you will need to adjust your riding SPEED in the rain. As Zimmerman says,
“SLOW DOWN!” Everything you do – turning, braking, accelerating – needs to be done far more
gradually and cautiously than in dry conditions.
Probably the best safety tip for riding in the rain is (if you can) to find a dry spot and park until
the rain passes.

Thank you,
Mark

Secretary
Dale Barkman,
                                                                       Ladies of Harley

A big thank you to all those members and guests that helped make the Christmas
party a big success. With a great group of volunteers, we were able decorate the tables,
serve the food, have entertainment and socially distance while enjoying each other’s
company. Everyone was grateful to still be able to have this event and expressed their
appreciation to those involved.
Many of the homeless backpacks that were put together last month have been
distributed to those in the community. With the colder weather many have not been out
and about on the streets as they are in warmer temps but we have managed to find some
we felt were in real need of the items in the bags. We continue to pass them out as we drive
through our streets.
With so many restrictions still in place it may be hard to get started on projects we
had discussed for this year. We wanted to do something for the children in the hospital at
Easter, but may not be able to bring in items due to the COVID guidelines. This is
something we will have to contact the administration of the hospital to discuss. We will
keep everyone informed of the progress.
We are also hoping to get together for some ladies’ crafting days this year with use of
the room upstairs at the dealership. This would allow some of our more “crafty” ladies to
share their ideas and skills with us less talented individuals. A schedule of the events will
be put on the calendar once we have had a chance to get together and come up with a game
plan.
Any ideas for the Ladies of Harley can be discussed with
any us and will be shared with all.
Looking forward to the New Year!
Dale Barkman
Ladies of Harley Officer
A Ray of Sunshine

Hi there! For those of you who may not know, our chapter has an appointed Board position known,
affectionately, as “The Sunshine Lady,” (or person….hey, we don’t judge).
I am Louise Miley and have the honor of holding that position. I hope to fill the role as well as Dale has
over the past couple of years.
So, what is a “Sunshine Lady” you may ask? Unfortunately, as the old saying goes, “Into each life, some
rain must fall.” Our Chapter wants you to know that we are thinking of you in the bad times as well as the good.
So, my job is to drop you a card to let you know that we are there for you.
Of course, this has all been a set-up to my asking for your help. If you know of anyone who’s having a
rough time of it – who’s been ill, in the hospital, had an injury, or has lost a loved one – PLEASE let me know!
Don’t hesitate to mention it during our chapter meeting, let one of the other board members know when you’re
on a ride, or drop me an email. Our email address is polkhog3877@gmail.com

                     NOTES
January 18, 2021

As I sit here tonight, piecing together a
newsletter for our Chapter, I’m thinking to myself that
maybe…just maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.
I wanted to give our monthly reader something new to look at, something new to
look forward to. I’m trying to add a variety of interests to reach more of our
members. I’m sure Randy can appreciate the fact that I now have a creative
outlet. It gives him the tiniest of breaks and allows me to busy my mind instead
of his. I keep his thoughts full of my questions that I’m not sure he ever really
asks any of his own questions. Maybe that’s why I assume he knows everything.

I hope that each one of you find something in this issue, that made you
smile at the memory, made you wish you had been part of the memory or sparks
your interest in adding your own page next month. This is OUR newsletter, and
should appeal to each one of us in some way. I take suggestions and welcome any
of you to write an article or add a photo in the future. If you just want to pass
on a personal achievement or brag on a family member – please let me know!

The thing that jumped out most to me in this issue is as a Chapter, our
capacity for giving and supporting each other. I truly have some of the greatest
people in my life because of motorcycles. You have supported the Ladies of
Harley and our many charitable causes over 2020. Truly without all of you, most
of those projects would have never come to pass. Together, we have helped the
homeless, brought smiles and comfort to several sick children, gave the spirit
of Christmas to 100’s of our youth, remembered our fallen soldiers by placing a
wreath on their grave and supported our dealership and community in many
other ways. We’ve danced together, broke bread together and rode like the wind
together.

I look forward to an even better 2021 and I’m truly thankful for each one of
you. Stay safe and healthy~!

PIG TALES
If you have an article you’d like to submit to the newsletter, or a helpful tip you’d like to share with your fellow members, please
let us know! Your article can be of general interest, or motorcycle related. Maybe you want to brag about your grandkids or
share a funny picture of your pet. Or maybe you’ve taken that vacation of a lifetime and you have photos you want to share.
THIS IS YOUR SPOT! You can email with any submissions for future issues.

This month’s PIG TALE is brought to you by Russ Simcoe – THANK YOU!

Fellow Polk County HOG Members,

Long time ago I rode Dynas, Low Riders, Sportsters and Wide Glides and none of them have a
Volt gauge and that’s a problem if your charging system is taking a Dump as it happened to me.

My turn signals slowed down but I didn’t notice it till I needed a push to get me going, because I
had some battery left but if the battery is Dead you are Dead in the water too! My regulator
went out and I didn’t know it. I took Care of that problem with an after-market charging light.
It was attached to my bike and if my bike was not charging a red light came on.

I had that on all my bikes till I bought my 1st Road Glide as they have a Volt meter. Hope this
may help others with no Volt meter. I know it sure helped me.

That’s my thought for my fellow chapter members,
Russ Simcoe

Creamy Taco Soup
 1 pound lean ground beef
 1/2 red bell pepper chopped
 2 (10 fluid ounce) cans Ro-tel diced tomatoes & green chilies with juices
    4 cups chicken broth
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon ground cumin
    1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    1/2 tablespoon chili powder
 1 (12 fluid ounce) can corn drained
 1 (15 fluid ounce) can black beans drained & rinsed
 1 (8 ounce) block of cream cheese (I used Philly)
 Salt & pepper to taste
 Toppings (optional): grated cheddar, avocado, cilantro, tortilla strips, etc.

INSTRUCTIONS:

   1. Take the cream cheese out of the fridge to let it soften up.
   2. Add the ground beef to a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Brown the beef
        and drain the fat.
   3. Add all the ingredients except for the cream cheese and salt & pepper.
   4. Increase the heat to high and bring the soup to a boil. Turn down the heat so it's
simmering gently for 8 minutes. While the soup cooks, prep your toppings.
   5. Cut the cream cheese into smaller pieces and add it to the soup. Let it melt in (you
may have to stir it a fair bit until it's fully dissolved). Season the soup with salt &
pepper and serve with toppings as desired.
New Year’s Day Trip
                                         to Key West

Kick stand were up at 7:30am and we hit the road! We had 16 members and 1 guest ready to head out on our
3 day adventure. The weather was fantastic and the comradery was priceless. We got to know some new
members better, and we got to see a different side of some not so new members. We laughed and told tales
and had the very best time with each other. It was a great memory maker for this Chapter group. From
Sunup to Sundown, we took in all that we had time to fit in!

THE LIFE THAT MANY WILL NOT UNDERSTAND:

I own a motorcycle because of a personal life choice.
One day when I am very old
and when I cannot ride anymore,
it will be in my garage as a trophy of my memories.

Because of riding I have met people who taught me something and have the same spirit.
Because of riding I meet people now, who get wisdom from me.

I get wet,
I get cold,
And I have been hot!

I have been afraid,
I fell, And I stood up,
I even hurt myself,

But also, I’ve laughed out loud with the wind.
I spoke a thousand times with myself and God.....Still do.
I’ve sang and shouted with joy like a madman,
And yes ... sometimes I’ve cried.

I have seen wonderful places because of motorcycles.
I have made curves that even my Dad would be proud of; other times I made curves full of terror.

I’ve stopped many times to see a landscape.
I spoke with perfect strangers.
I go out with frustrations inside
and return home with a feeling of absolute peace in my heart.

I always think how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance, even when feeling fear.
Every time I go up to my ride, I think about how wonderful it is.
I learned through gestures to communicate with other riders.

I spend money that I do not have,
I gave up many things,
but it's all worth it...

My bike is not a means of transportation but is a piece of iron with wheels that God has blessed me with,
it's part of who I am.

I often tell people; I look myself in the mirror & ask “Can I live with what I’m about to do today”?
At night I return to the mirror & ask that same person
looking back at me “Can you live with what you did
                           today”?
We’ve all lived busy lives in a busy world – stopping to
smell the roses is often hard to do. We sometimes need
reminders that life is short. We should slow down and
enjoy it. Life changing experiences happen that remind us
“it could happen to me too”. We remember one of our own “Allan Chase” this past year as a reminder
                           of our own mortality.

Motorcycling quotes tell us – “It’s all about the ride, or the journey ~ not about the destination”, and
about how motorcyclist are family, and that we are part of a
brotherhood. I believe all these things are true.

                                   A BIKERS PRAYER

                                   Biker Angel, be my guide
As I climb upon my Harley to ride
Let your halo guide the way
And keep me safe from harm today

Let your wings provide me the wind and air
And send it coursing through my hair
Find for ma a sunny place
And let it shine upon my face

Keep the clouds and rain at bay
And keep me dry throughout the day
Watch over my brothers and sisters who ride with me
Keep them safe and close to thee

Keep my wheels upon the ground
So I may return home safe and sound
But should disaster be my fate
Guide me through to Heaven’s gate

If I must join my fallin’ brethern
Please show me the way to Biker Heaven!

We had such a great turnout for our 4th Annual Blessing of the Bikes!

Thank you to all that came out on such a beautiful day. I would like to thank
Randy Stanton and Wayne “Hop” Barkman for their contributions to the
program this year, as well as special thanks to Brent Daniels for giving our
Blessing.

Also, as luck would have it, Brent Daniels was the winning ticket holder for
the Blessing Bag! Congratulations Brent! Enjoy!!
December Highlights
December once again proved to be one of our
busiest months. We had a meeting, giftwrapped
for the dealership, our annual Christmas Party,
our Christmas Lights ride, the Wreaths Across
America ride, our annual Rudolph Roundup Toy
Run, and our New Year’s Day trip to Key West.

                                                   Okay, technically
                                                  that was NOT in
                                                  December, but the
                                                  prep for the trip
                                                  certainly was! Mix
in all of that with a trip to the urgent care and
family obligations and you now have your
answer as to “what in the world happened with
our December newsletter?” I thought I would
share some highlights of all that went on in
December and I invite you to view our FaceBook page for all of our photo uploads! If you’ve not had
the opportunity to view our page, you can find us at Polk County Hog.
