The Firth Tower was built in 1882 by Josiah Clifton Firth on his estate and
was used as the Estate Office and as sleeping quarters for single men. It
stands on rising ground commanding an extensive view of the surrounding
countryside. Other historical buildings are in the reserve and the historical
centre there houses the archives of the Matamata district.

                                        June 2018

Meetings held 7.30pm on the third Thursday of the month, Feb - Nov
All Saints Anglican Parish Lounge, Hohaia Street, Matamata

Convenor’s Report:
This week your new Committee met and started working on the programme for the next year. We
have committed to purchasing a new computer so that we have the correct technology on hand for
our guest speakers. It will also mean that on Research Days we will have an extra resource available
(albeit without CD capacity) and with Wi-Fi available in the Church Lounge it may prove quite
handy.

The NZSG has suggested that Branches consider moving Family History Month from August to
September to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the vote for women’s Suffrage Day on 19
September. We have decided not to do this as we have our 40th birthday celebration on 16
September. We have however decided to follow their recommendation that we celebrate the 125th
anniversary of votes for women. Therefore, we are asking members who had ancestors who signed
the 1893 petition or voted for the first time in 1893 to provide a small biography to be part of
the display we hope to have on public display in the library. Guidelines for this have been provided
by Archives NZ and will be available at the June meeting. We also intend to promote one of the
provided by Archives NZ and will be available at the June meeting. We also intend to promote
one of the Research afternoons as an open day to the public.

Since our last meeting I have been the guest speaker at the Kiwanis meeting, I hope this adds
to raising our profile with the community.

If you can assist with a plate for supper at one of our meetings, please put your name on the
roster by the sign in book at meetings. If we all volunteer it should mean one turn a year per
member.

On Saturday 23 June we host the regional meeting and as hosts will need to provide morning
and afternoon teas. Attendees bring their own lunch. Members are invited to hear the guest
speaker in the afternoon - Michelle Patient talking about DNA. We are holding a “Harvest
Festival” raffle and for every copy of a certificate donated on the day to the NZSG collection
a free ticket in the raffle will be given. If members have a pot of jam or preserves to donate
to the raffle it would be very much appreciated. Please bring contributions to the June
meeting.

Our next committee meeting is to be held on August 24th.

In House News

➢ CD Library - The Branch has several CD’s that are available for ‘members
only’ to borrow and are available at each meeting or research afternoon.
You just record which CD you have borrowed and when you have finished
using, then return either at the next meeting or research afternoon.
➢ Library Books – The branch library has many books on various topics that
are available for members to borrow. Please browse our collection when
next in the Lounge. There could be one on a subject you are researching.
➢ Ancestry.com – this is available at the Public Library for members to use
     during opening hours.

Now that we are holding Committee meetings away from our main meetings
members may like to receive the minutes. If you would like to be put on the
minute’s circulation list, please drop Christine an email and she will include you
in these.

Thought for the month:
A senior’s version of Facebook (sent in by a member of the group)
For those of my generation who do not, and cannot, comprehend why Facebook
exists: I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same
principles. Therefore, every day I walk down the street and tell passers-by
what I have eaten, how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night
before, what I will do later and with whom. I give them pictures of my family,
my dog, and of me gardening, taking things apart in the garage, watering the
lawn, standing in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing
what anyone and everybody does every day. I also listen to their conversations,
give them “thumbs up” and tell them I “like” them. And it works just like
Facebook. I already have 4 people following me: 2 police officers, a private
investigator and a psychiatrist.
