Key Stage 4 AQA A Geography 2015/16
Local Fieldwork Investigation:
Producing the Student Portfolio for Controlled Assessment, 3days
Students will research and undertake fieldwork in an appropriate environment in
order to start to prepare their portfolio to take forward to the high control ‘write up’
phase of their controlled assessment. The field work will be based on the
pre-released titles from AQA A. This short course will cover all aspects of the
preparation, research, planning, processing and presentation to start to create of a
portfolio to take back to school or college.

COURSE CONTENT
CHOOSE ONE TOPIC FROM THE LIST BELOW TO PREPARE FOR THE CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT
Living worlds (Ecosystems)
2015 controlled assessment: Students will investigate a deciduous woodland ecosystem.
2016 controlled assessment: Investigate the uses made of a deciduous woodland.
Water on the Land (Rivers)
2015 controlled assessment: Students will investigate how feature of a river change over distance.
2016 controlled assessment: Investigate erosion and/or deposition in a river channel.
The Coastal Zone
2015 controlled assessment: Students will investigate a hard and/or soft engineering strategy(ies) used to
manage a stretch of coastline.
2016 controlled assessment: Investigate landforms created by coastal erosion and/or deposition.
Changing Urban Environments
2015 controlled assessment: Students will investigate land use in (part of) an urban area.
2016 controlled assessment: Investigate different functional parts of a settlement.
Tourism
2015 controlled assessment: Students will investigate the positive and/or negative effects of tourism on a
locality.
2016 controlled assessment: Investigate a National Park or coastal resort as a tourist destination.
In addition to the above topics we can also deliver case studies and controlled assessments on: Changing Rural
Environments; Globalisation; Rocks, resources and scenery; Challenge of weather and climate; Ice on the

Analyse the data collected using a variety of presentation techniques
Consider improvements to the investigation
Consider anomalies in data collected and explain why they might have
occurred
