Instead, a bunch of enthusiastic riders got together and did an adventurous trip down to Durban. Our monthly Monday meetings seem to be gaining momentum with some very interesting talks, technical advice, etc. so please keep this up. There are a number of events planned for the next few months. One in particular is the Maluti Tour in May. Please book your accommodation soonest as this is going to be a great ride in the picturesque Golden Gate/ Clarens area. We are still looking for members to join the committee. It’s really not that difficult to get involved so please volunteer. Safe & fun riding 2
EDITORIAL BY STEVEN HELM Somehow February turned into bumper riding month after the DJ and Natal Classic were cancelled and it seems unneccassarily so! Gavins ride to Ascot Mews being well supported and the Swartbrand usually occupying the best time of the year went ahead with around 60 bikes in total participating, this was double the anticipated number! And Bills1925 Indian was the winning bike this year so it’s on the cover of Kickstart. March CMC Sunday was a hugely well supported affair despite a classic run to Machadodorp on the same day. Then we ran 12 bikes on the scenic meander from Johannesburg to the beach in Umdloti which turned into a 900 km run with all finishing and a 1952 350cc Matchless showing us how it’s done! On the Durban Dash we found a road in the Maluti’s to run a private Hill climb for older bikes on the Sunday morning, we can record times for a fun comparison of marque, cc and year over a gentle couple hundred meters. So prep those old performance bikes you don’t like to rally and pack some snacks to enjoy the fantastic scenery! Or just run what you brung! The informative technical discussion last month! Credit to Ralph Pitchford on really simplifying a usually worrying task. 3

COMING UP – REGULARITY PRACTICE/ TRAINING! We will be holding our next training / practice run for those who would like to have some exposure to a regularity run without the pressure of a formal competitive run. It is also designed to attract those who are experienced and would like to keep their eyes in. This is not restricted to any specific age of vehicle so just about anything in a road legal condition can be used however, we do encourage classic / vintage motorcycles. Cars are welcome if you want to use a navigator. This is a paperless event so there is no entry form. All I need is for you to email me at britishbikespares@gmail.com or contact me on 0834084296 by Friday 26th March latest. I need your name and the speed group you want to participate in. That is 60 kph or 70 kph. I will email you the route schedule which you can assemble into your rally box. Only speeds in increments of 5 kph will be used so a small lookup speed chart can be used. That is 30 kph to 70 kph in 5 kph increments. We will meet at 8.30 at the Wimpy behind the Engen on Kingfisher road just to the right off Rondebolt, road if coming from the N17 side, Sunward Park. More detailed directions available on request. The route is 115 km long and at 70 kph takes 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete. First bike will be off at 9.01. You will be given a start time in advance as there are no number boards required for this. After returning to the start venue at the end of the run your logger will be down loaded and your results made available. Remenber this is not a competition. For those with out loggers I will lend you one A R50 admin and set up donation will be appreciated. Until the 28th March, Gavin Walton 5
THE ASCOT MEWS RUN I got a notification of a run to Ascot Mews in Alberton from our Chairman and then a call to ask if I could lead the Northern riders in from the VVC as Gavin Walton was bringing riders from the East. It seemed simpler to meet for coffee in Queens Street Kensington on the 21st February at 8 am as the intention was to miss the N3 section from Gilloolys where bikes feel especially exposed due to the fast moving traffic! Having only heard from a neighbor whose bike I knew was giving trouble I left home late expecting no one to be at the meeting place and was shocked to find 10 bikes waiting! A bit flustered I set off with all in tow via Malvern, Cleveland then past the Rand Airport and down into our Deep South to Heidelberg rd. Arriving via the second gate opens up into the Barrel Pub on a curved driveway perfect for bikes and the gardens and water feature used for Ascot Mews wedding photos make for a great background to parked motorcycles. Seeing Neville already arrived and Jaycee later I assumed there was a third ride in from the southern Jhb inhabitants and shortly thereafter Gavin led in a group of 10+ riders! Well the visit was very successful as always at this venue and the smaller groups arriving cut out on traffic issues and anyone getting lost or too spread out! A fantastic way to have a run as it was interesting to see who else arrived at the end venue and perusing bikes other than what you had seen at the start! Riders left in their own time after drinks and nourishment, thank you Brandon! Some photos for your enjoyment are on the next page…Steven Helm 6
CLUB NIGHT – 22 FEBRUARY 2021 By Secretary David Pitchford The club night was attended by 31 members with 9 apologies received. Ralph welcomed Desmond Soekoe as a new visitor. Good feedback was received from the members on the recent social ride to Ascot Mews in Alberton. The event was attended by 22 classic bikes and all enjoyed a good breakfast and a few refreshments from Brandon’s ‘Barrel Pub’. Steve Helm spoke about the upcoming Swartbrand Run to be held on Saturday 27th February 2021. A group of DJ bike enthusiasts have organised a classic bike ride from Johannesburg to Durban from the 11th to 14th March 2021 in lieu of the DJ commemorative run which was cancelled due to Covid-19. Gavin Walton is providing another regulatory training session on Sunday 28th March 2021 with the first bike leaving at 09:01 from the Sunwood Park Engen garage. A 60 and a 70 kph speed group will be catered for. Please bring along your logger. Our new visitor, Desmond, spoke about his Soekoe motorised bicycles which he sells from his dealership in Fishers Hill, Germiston. He has sold approximately 200 bikes to date and is keen to start boardtrack racing series at a Velodrome to cater for 3 classes of racing bicycles. These 66cc motorised bicycles reach speeds of up to 65kph and the 2 stroke motor is made in China. The ‘Motorcyclist of the Month’ was awarded to Roland Nancekivell for offering to rebuild the wheels on the VMC bike project. Any members wishing to assist with this rebuild can contact Brandon Jarvis on 082 410 8828. The ‘Bike Talk’ was presented by Roland Nancekivell on his beautifully restored 1965 Honda Super Hawk 305cc OHC. He started the project in April 2020 during lockdown and completed it early this year. A job well done Roland. 8
Eddie Germiquet briefly gave a presentation on a 1975 BMW R90S which his son restored. In closing the club evening, we watched a video on Vintage Style Class at the Kop Hill climb. The next club meeting will be held from 18:00 on Monday 22nd March 2021 (Human Rights Day). Come and join us for a boerewors roll and social before the club meeting at 19:30. See you there and be safe. 9
MY FIRST ‘SWARTBRAND RUN’ Saturday 27 & Sunday 28 February 2021 Not knowing what to expect is always unnerving, especially when you are about to spend a weekend away with a clutch of hardcore bikers you don’t know from a bar of Sunlight. Nobody wants the wrong kind of surprise. So, when I showed up on my blue 1994 Dyna Wide Glide at the old Classic Motorcycle Club venue as a “Swartbrand Run”newbie, I was not sure where to fit in with the dazzling assembly of machines, from ancient English and American masterpieces to the now-very- collectible German, Japanese, and Italian stuff from the seventies and eighties. I need not have worried. The minute we set off, higgledy-piggledy, with Steve at the Helm on his easy-to-spot white Guzzi California, I realized that I was going to have proper, good-natured, wholesome, long-forgotten motorcycling fun. I felt like a kid again, riding with my mates. Instant camaraderie, as seems always to be the case when two wheels are involved. 10
First stop was at a hidden gem in Alberton at a top-of-the-range wedding venue… an oasis called Ascot Mews. Behind the bar and having pre-organized delicious, fresh, bacon-and- egg rolls, was Brandon Jarvis who I discovered was also riding the 1932 Rudge, a rare 350cc four-valve single. Arriving later in his souped-up sweeper – a cool 1974 1.9 Auto Kombi – was Bevan Beckman, whom I wasted no time in asking to please transport my rucksack, to which he handily agreed. The next surprise was in Daggafontein, in Springs… where we all pulled in at Frank Struckmeyer’s amazing museum with its collection of rare motorbikes and other motoring hardware, including a terrifying vintage single-cylinder thrasher which he fired up and scared the living daylights out of everyone with its sinister explosive thump. Thrilling stuff! We kitted up, and next stop was at the Heidelberg Club, where I almost had lunch with my new-found friends Tim Hammerich (on his immaculate 1977 Honda CB550, sporting four chrome exhausts), and his side-kick Mark Russell (doing the honors on Tim’s tidy 1971 Honda CB750 four), and dapper Gary Abramse on his mint white 2014 Triumph Bonneville T100. I say “almost” had lunch because the trio forbade me from ordering the venue’s super-tempting cheeseburger, telling me that at our next stop the grub would be even tastier… And so, on we rode, to The Hound on Henley. Not for the poor, my lamb curry was delicious. Fine dining at its finest. But I still want to give those Heidelberg Club cheeseburgers a whirl. 11
The rest of the Swartbrand pack had meanwhile stopped at the super-social Gecko pub in Meyerton. My group of four joined them as they were kitting up to leave, but I did manage a peek into the saloon, which reminded me of Hotel California. You can check in but checking out is clearly another matter altogether. En route to our overnight stop in Deneysville, the Swartbrand entourage took a breather on a nice quiet stretch of road in the middle of the Free State’s best part of nowhere. Great fun was had by all, riding up and down the road in pairs, like as in the TV program CHIPS… each rider testing how well they could match their opposite number’s disciplined skill. Colin Blackburn, who conceived the Swartbrand run and whose name it bears, choreographed these riding duels, using his cap as a flag, all vintage-like. The highlight of the contests was Bill Lance on his fabulous red 1925 600cc twin Indian riding with Brandon on the ’32 Rudge. What a spectacle, all captured by Terrence Thompson and his clever drone. Of course, we did not want to post any of this fine footage on social 12
media, lest we made folk envious that they had not joined us on the run and also try to stalk us via our number plates and ask us for our autographs. Our last stop was opposite the Vaal Dam wall, where everyone got great pics or videos of themselves and their bikes against the backdrop of the open sluice gate in the distance with the great misty plume of water gushing out into the river below. At sunset we arrived at the Lake Avenue Inn in Deneysville, welcomed by owners Charmaine and John. Boy did they pull out all the stops. The braai was outstanding… I do need the name of their butcher. My steak was done to perfection, accompanied by a crispy country salad, and bread rolls fresh as can be. But for me the big surprise was the live music. Who would have guessed that in the middle of the Free State you could be treated to a world class rock band? Versatile musician “Ivan the Tiger”, as he called himself, was a treat to behold. And then, would you believe it, hostess Charmaine got behind the drums and astonished everyone with her dexterity, 13
and then her protégé Elana, the bar lady manager who followed suit. When maître d Margaret took to the microphone, I couldn’t believe my ears… I thought that I was listening to Elaine Page herself. Must go back there for another dose of their music magic, asap. After we had all quenched our considerable thirst, it was time for the prize giving, ably hosted by Colin. Bill Lance received the trophy for oldest rider & bike, winning a magnificent full Imperial Tool set donated by Barry Steyn of Gauteng Pumps. Brandon Jarvis won the prize for youngest rider & oldest bike, receiving a huge tub of hand cleaner, also donated by Barry. My hotel room was my next surprise… warm, clean, comfortable, and with a great view. I am sure that everyone had a very good nights’ sleep indeed. 14
After brekkies the next morning, just before setting off home, I thought to at least go take a two-minute look at their “Motorcycle Museum”, which I thought sounded like marketing overreach. Until I got inside. Well. In case you are ever in the Free State, do yourself a favor and go and see what must be one of the best motorcycle collections in the Southern Hemisphere. I won’t say what is on display. Best you go see for yourself. Stuff you have never seen and may never see again. When I got back home on Sunday afternoon, I felt that I had been on one of those expensive week-long packed-with-activities overseas tours. Yet the Swartbrand Run had been done on a shoestring, over two short days. Now I know what all the hype had been about, and why this event is so looked-forward to. A huge vote of thanks to Colin Blackburn and to Steve Helm for putting it together. Come time for the Swartbrand Run, 2022, no surprise where I will be. Chris Van 15
DURBAN DASH 2021 -- Gavin Walton. What would have been the Durban to Johannesburg Run over the weekend of 11th to 14th March had it not been cancelled, turned into a very pleasant ride from Johannesburg to Durban for 12 of us on classic motorcycles accompanied by 2 sweep vehicles. This event was put together by a small group of guys which included Steve Helm and Brandon Jarvis. The idea was to ride down to Durban on classic motorcycles, finishing at Beach Bums which is just north of Umdloti over a period of 3 days. We all gathered at Brandon’s Ascot Mews on the Thursday morning at 8am, in time for a good breakfast and then departed for Clarens at 9am. Well things did not get off to the expected start with a fuel supply problem with Jarrett’s newly restored Honda 550 Four. After much fiddling and experimenting we were off at 10am. We headed south down the R59 to our first stop at John Boswell’s museum in Deneysville. After crossing the Vaal Dam at Oranjeville we were stopped by Steve to be told that the road ahead, ‘The Road of Death’, was as it sounded condition wise and said we should turn back. Thus a detour of around 50km. 16
The ‘new’ road had no surface but we had no choice other than to use it. Eventually it improved and after several K’s stopped for fuel at Heilbron. What with bad roads and several bike problems we were running out of time to get to Clarens in daylight so the planned lunch stop in Lindley was abandoned and we pressed on towards Reitz then turning right to Bethlehem. At this stage Ralph had loaded his Triumph Bonneville as it had stopped charging, Guido also had battery problems and Darren’s R50/2 was loaded with a puncture. Just outside Bethlehem Adrian’s BMW decided to lose the plug at the bottom of the carb and was also loaded. After a quick fuel stop we headed on to the Maluti Mountain Lodge for our first night stop. With 4 bikes loaded there was a lot of activity trying to get them sorted out. The flat tyre had been fixed in Bethlehem. 17
A very enjoyable and welcome supper was had at the Bocca Di Lupo Ristorante in Clarens. The owner, Paolo was a great host and plied us all with several refreshments, at our expense of course, until some of us needed to head back and rest. Unfortunately for those expecting more entertainment it was not to be, as everything in Clarens closes fairly early, including the Lodge bar. Early Friday morning there was a frantic rush to the hardware store by those seeking vital bits to get their bikes back on the road, while the rest of us enjoyed a great breakfast. Ralph, unable to buy a new battery, borrowed the battery out of Brandon’s R60, strapped it to the seat and was good to go. Guido got a loan battery and was also ready again. Adrian despite getting a driver to leave Jhb early with a pair of carbs discovered they were not the same as his, he however managed to make a plug from a feather duster handle and wire secured it in place. This was very successful indeed. Martin set about getting his 350 Matchless sorted, as it was continually falling apart along the way, but amazingly he kept going. With only a half hour delay in starting we headed off from the garage in Clarens, yes all 12 bikes now serviceable, toward the Golden Gate National Park. Jaycee acted as the guide and took us to some awesome spots to enjoy the view. It was at the first such stop that Ralph announced that his throttle cable had snapped but he refused to be defeated by it and rode with the left carb cable in his left hand while operating the right carb with the twist grip. After the Golden Gate it was off to Little Switzerland for fuel whilst enjoying the views of the Sterkfontein dam but not stopping. Then Bergville to Winterton, turning right to stop at The Nest Hotel for lunch. 18
Host and owner of The Nest, Stuart Longmore, welcomed us and pointed us in the direction of the dining area. We had phoned ahead earlier in the day to see if he had a battery for Ralph. Upon our arrival he presented Ralph with a new gate motor battery which he driven all the way to Winterton to buy. After the great assistance from Stuart and having filled up on his good food and drinks, we set off on course for Nottingham Road via Estcourt and Mooi River. After a short fuel stop at Mooi River, Ralph decided to show us the way. This was fine until the battery that was strapped to his saddle decided to jump off and bounce along the road but remained connected to the bike by its cables. The battery amazingly survived, but looked nothing like it had before. We were soon on our way again. Nottingham Road Hotel was a bit of a relief to arrive at and hot and thirsty was an understatement. After doing the odd bit of maintenance to the bikes it was time to hit the pub. Never underestimate a small, what would appear to be a sleepy village, in the middle of nowhere. This must rate as the party of the year. Saturday morning saw some bleary eyes emerge. Hank Raatgewer had come all the way from Hillcrest to ride to Beach Bums with us. After a super breakfast and toilets with a view, pic below, arranged by Yuvi, at Blueberrries just down the road it was time to head off. 13 bikes with Hank as path finder headed off on the traditional DJ route to Howick. We joined the N3 just before Howick to avoid the traffic and the shocking roads through the town. This was a great relief to all as we needed to realign all our internal bits after a rather bumpy ride. Leaving the N3 just before Pietermaritzburg we took the Grey Town road to Wartburg and then on to Tongaat. The roads were superb initially but the closer to Tongaat the worse they got with no evidence of any attempt at repair. 19
Finally after a shambles of trying to get through Tongaat in the midday traffic 13 weary and overheated riders with our 2 sweeps stopped at Beach Bums. The waiters and waitresses could not bring the refreshments quickly enough to help us celebrate the achievement of all the bikes getting to our destination. The final requirement was to have all riders in the sea with a toast of their choice. This was essentially the end of the event, most of the guys went to a restaurant in Ballito before spending the night in Umhlanga Rocks and making their way home the next day. All in all it was a great ride with great camaraderie. If there was help needed it was available and lots of new friendships have been made and still many stories to tell. Well done to Steve and Brandon for their inspiration and organising, and to all those who assisted, in particular the 2 sweep drivers Hennie and Brendan and last but not least Bevan for riding as the safety net at the back. In summary we covered 860 km and the following classics were on the ride: Adrian 66 BMW R69S, Brandon 60 R60/2, Jarrett Honda 78 CB550k, Ralph 69 Triumph Bonneville, Darren 60 BMW R50, Juvi 68 BMW R69S, Bevan 70 Moto Guzzi V7 special, Martin 52 Matchless G3, Guido 69 Norton Commando, Jaycee 66 BMW R69S, Steve Moto Guzzi California, Gavin AJS M18. 20
ADVERT TROLLING SCAMS By John Hassall In the recent past I have received a number of these via email and they usually refer to an older advert which the scammer has found in an old magazine in which you have advertised in the wanted columns. I know that our late chairman, as well as a member of the VVC, have also been approached. I’ve never fallen for one of these scams but the aforementioned VVC member did. He asked me what I thought was going on as it appeared to come from the UK, and I was due to go there anyway soon after, so I followed it up. About which incident, more later. This is how it works and how to identify a scam and avoid it: It’s usually based on an advert placed in a club newsletter or official magazine from a long time previously. I just had one referring to a Kickstart from 2017, and, which is a bit of a giveaway, for the second time. Some clubs like the VMCC (UK) don’t email you their newsletter, you have a password which means that the newsletter is not spread around as much as it would be if it is emailed to the member or available on an unprotected website. The scammer professes to have what you need, and of course you must contact him urgently to get his details. One scammer enclosed a photo of a car which he had clearly lifted from the web, as I found that very photo. Questioning the scammer in in detail about the item(s) he wants to sell you will invariably reveal that it is a scam. One trick question carefully constructed to elicit ignorance of the item usually does the job. A scammer will usually agree he has what you ask for, so ask for something which doesn’t exist. Game over. An example of how unpleasant this can be was a scam perpetrated on one of our sister club’s members who had already sent money to someone in UK for some rare car parts, but had not received the parts or indeed had any contact since he sent the money off. I followed it up for him, with a couple of emails, offering to collect the parts on an upcoming trip to UK. It turned out that the address did not exist and the emails from the ‘seller’ became increasingly aggressive, especially after I sent him the telephone number and address of a friend in London who would deal with him. This was in fact the telephone number and address of the nearest police station to the address he originally gave. I finally received back an email threatening that he would ‘come and get me’ if I didn’t stop chasing him. Threats are not action, but you never know how far these crooks will go. Best to recognize it as a scam as early as possible and stop wasting your time. They will try it on, that’s their job, and its an increasing risk. 21
