13Retrieval practice - effective quizzing
When used correctly, the look, cover, write, check method is extremely effective in enabling
retrieval to take place.
KCI’s quizzing expectations
▪ Your teachers will identify which section of the knowledge organiser you need to quiz on.
▪ You should chunk the information that you have been asked to learn. By organising the
content into smaller sections, it will prevent you becoming overwhelmed.
▪ To learn the content, you should aim to memorise the section by repeating it aloud or writing
the information out (using scrap paper) over and over again from memory.
▪ To support long term retention, you must cover it up to get your brain working hard – this will
make the content stick.
▪ You should write it out to see what you can remember. Even if you are struggling, you should
not refer to your knowledge organiser or notes – you must remain focused and challenge
yourself to remember.
▪ When you have written down everything that they can remember, check it by referring back to
the knowledge organiser and using a different colour pen to tick what has been remembered
and to make corrections as appropriate.
▪ To ensure long term retention, you must repeat the process. This time, focus on the
words/sections that you got wrong.
