MAGNOLIA SHOWCASE PUTS
THE SPOTLIGHT ON CREATIVE
ARTS TALENT
The College is thrilled to bring a memorable evening of live
music to the main stage of the Brenton Langbein theatre on
Wednesday 16th October.
Entitled ‘Magnolia Showcase’, this inaugural event is a
special collaboration between internationally renowned
‘a cappella’ group, The Idea of North and the dynamic
talents of Faith’s Creative Arts students. Audience members
will be taken on a musical journey covering an eclectic Members of the Senior Choir in rehearsals last week,

of North is one of Australia’s most highly awarded
contemporary a cappella group. Known for their special
brand of singing, James Morrison has famously quoted ‘A
cappella is sometimes thought of as being minimalist, but
when you can sing and entertain like The Idea of North, a
band would just get in the way.’
Faith Lutheran College is renowned for nurturing talent
and inspiring the next generation of music professionals.
Magnolia Showcase provides the community with an
opportunity to enjoy aspiring music talent, which may just
include the next national or international music star.

The lawns of the Wine Education Centre was the
perfect setting for approximately 80 special guests
including alumni students and their families on Sunday

of 1989, 1999 and 2009, guests delighted in a relaxing
afternoon of food, wine and live music provided by

nerves subsided, reminiscing lead to laughter and some
colourful tales.
Fascinating stories included the location of the original
school classrooms in the St John’s congregation car
park in 1985. During that time students visited Tanunda

was carried out in the homes of parents, and Science

As many alumni embraced during farewells, it was

The guests had gathered for an evening of entertainment from the Faith Year 12 music cohort. The Year 12 students were both excited and filled with nervous anticipation. For many it was a bittersweet feeling to be performing solo pieces for possibly the last time during their high school experience. Many of the performances were to be recorded and assessed for their Music Performance, Music Studies and Music Exploration subjects respectively. Opening the evening in style was the Faith Senior Choir, made up of students from Years 10 to Year 12. They served up a variety of genres from classical to musical theatre all the way to an enchanting four-part arrangement of The Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’. The Year 12 soloist performances included vocal, clarinet, guitar and bass pieces; some even composed by the performers themselves. The students demonstrated their professionalism, creativity and story telling abilities through a captivating and well-polished show met with the audience’s praise. Whilst the show exhibited students’ individual achievements, it was a hugely collaborative effort amongst peers, staff and accompanists, once again illustrating the scope of professional skills acquired by these senior students over their music journey. The Faith Music Learning Area looks forward to following the continuation of this journey for many of its Year 12 students, and wishes to congratulate them and their many supporters on a hugely successful show. I applied for the Criminology workshop as it is a

it. I took this opportunity in the hopes of being able to

me.
On the day, we were involved in activities that got us
to critically think about why crime occurs and what we
can do to prevent it. An example of this is that we were
given a task to analyse the graffiti vandalism happening
around Adelaide and find ways to prevent it. Some of
the ideas that we came up with was to use graffiti proof
paint on buildings as it ensures that the spray paint will Sophie Brice and Tabrett Roocke at The Unviersity of

This excursion was offered to support the students in Year 10 and 11 with subject selection and the Year 12 students in preparation for University applications for 2020. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and were able to attend either 2 or 3 course sessions. They attended sessions on; Creative Arts – Drama, Paramedic Science, Occupational Therapy, Teaching, Nursing/Midwifery, Law, Engineering, Psychology, Creative Arts – Media, Physiotherapy, International Business/Relations, Forensic and Analytical Science, Ciminology, Marine Biology, Exercise Science and much more. Again, many of our students attended the open days on the weekend of the 17 and 18 of August. I am pleased that students and families see the value in attending open days and working their way backwards from University courses to what subjects will support these pathways in Years 11 and 12. Attending open days helps students to make decisions on courses and the educational institutions or training providers that suit their needs and personality. A special thank you to Gil who drove the bus, Ms Bert, the students, Flinders University for paying the bus expenses and for each of you for attending the open days and valuing the exploration process as a family.
