EDITOR’S NOTE
Namaste,

S
ummer has arrived in full swing! Though the temperature is rising, it is the universal season of light and warmth. To balance the
heat and energy of the hot weather, various Yoga practices help to cultivate the opposite environment of cool and calm inside the
body. By opting for activities and foodstuff that are cooling, we can nourish our system and help increase our energy levels.

There are certainly many more holistic benefits of continuing our Yoga practice in the summer too! As most of these practices help the
body to self-regulate, they not only energize and refresh us but also relax and rejuvenate us. These also send a calming wave through the
nervous system. Summer is just a part of change as one season flows into another. We need to just go with the flow and simply follow
techniques that ensure our overall well being.

Across the globe, many of us remember our mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day. And there are various ways to express our
appreciation for them on this special day, dedicated to honoring motherhood. Whatever way we choose, our aim on this day should be to
be grateful to them and make them feel very special.

We are celebrating Mother's Day by sharing about the beautiful bond between our Pujya Maa Hansaji, also revered as the universal Maa,
and her mother Taraji who is lovingly called Nani by all. In this issue, Dr Jayadeva clearly states that one cannot divorce spirituality from
reality, the two go together. Also know how Yoga can help to offset the ill-effects of binge watching which has become a norm amongst
our generation.

Stay Cool and Happy Summer!

she has inspired me and so I am what I am today.

She has and will remain my role model. I have never seen her falling sick
or giving up. She has had a very active life from the very beginning and
gave her 100% in building a nurturing family home for us. She has always
been a nature loving person. She had her own cow and she milked her
every day to provide us with healthy and delicious curd, butter and ghee.
Alongside nurturing a family, she loved spending time in her garden
which was home to over 60 varieties of roses and many coconut trees. As
children, we too developed love and respect for Mother Nature. It was
because of her that this love is the major part of my personality. I am
highly influenced by her in many aspects. Apart from being loving, she
has also taught us to be fair and resilient. She was of the opinion to accept
the situation, good or bad, and come out of it unprejudiced and
unchanged.

• Social development: The search for self-identity makes teens more
prone to influences from peers and friends. At the same time, the
identity search makes them less dependent on parents than during
childhood years. They often tend to become more assertive if their
opinions differ. As a result of all these changes, adolescents now start
interacting with the opposite sex and often engage in romantic
  relationships.

As we see the transition, this could be a period marked by a lot of
conflicts during the adolescents’ strife to search for their own identities. Dr. Bhairavi Rajen Kothari

activity that goes on around us. Yoga does not believe that the world or verse in the Gita tells us that this whole world is like a sacrificial session,
the universe is without purpose or meaning. Modern physics today has with each one of us making an offering. But in reality it is not we who are

are related to each other in a larger design, a larger pattern.

The Gita tells us that we are in a sense the creature of our own destiny. We
are all either swimming together or sinking together. So we have to
support each other. So the situations that are occurring around us are all
in a way helping us in our own evolution. We are related to each and every
one, so the Indian thinking takes a very unified view of life. It takes the
stand that there is a benevolent reality, a larger process that help us in our
growth. It does not see meaninglessness in our existence, something that
is very frustrating to us all. When we see things going on around us that
are not at all right, we ask ourselves ‘why is this world as it is? Why is it so
wicked, why so imperfect? According to Yogic thinking, there is a reason
why it is so. And the reason is that we should get a little disillusioned Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra,

One of the oldest trees at The Yoga Institute is also the
largest of the Indian mango varieties with a fruit size
ranging from 500g to 1kg. It has smooth and tender flesh
without fibre. The king of fruits, the mango, is also the
national fruit of India and Pakistan.

  Mythological significance:
Mentioned in the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the
Puranas, the mango is a symbol of love and fertility.
Mango leaves are used to decorate archways during
  weddings and celebrations. Telugu/Kannada New
Year's Ugadi is celebrated by eating mango pachadi
  (chutney).

  Benefits*:
Mangoes taste fantastic and they are healthy too!
  1. High levels of fibre, pectin and vitamin C help to lower serum cholesterol levels, specifically low-
     density lipoprotein.
  2. Vitamin A and beta-carotene in mango can boost your eye health.
  3. Mangoes contain enzymes for better metabolism as well as plenty of fibre that helps digestion and elimination.
  4. Fresh mangoes offer some protection against several types of cancer as they contain phenolic and carotenoid compounds.

  A simple Do it Yourself
Do your bit for the environment! Save mango seeds and bury them around your building compound in sunny spots or along
highway roads while travelling. Mango trees grow readily from seeds, with germination success highest when seeds are
  obtained from mature fruits

How to grow: Mango trees are long-lived; some species fruit even after 300 years. The leaves are evergreen.

  1. It is a tropical fruit and needs a lot of sun to grow and bear fruit.
  2. It requires a well-drained, aerated and deep soil rich in organic matter
  3. Keep the weed in control to get good mature and healthy growth.

Mango season is on! Enjoy the king of fruits in various formats like mango juice, shakes, in pickles, chutneys or royally the

Like most people, I came to The Yoga Institute in 1984 with the misconception that Yoga is
asanas. I did not want to join. But seeing my severe asthma and skin problems, a colleague
literally dragged me. After meeting Hansaji and Dr. Jayadevji, I joined the special class and later
decided to join 7 days Health Camp and 7 months TTC as I was also going through emotional
issues, had very low self-esteem and had become an agnostic, severe sciatica pain and skin
                            problem leading to osteoporosis .

Dr Sahab then told me to do only asanas and pranayama and to develop faith. I took the
decision that if I can’t do techniques, I’ll start practising the philosophy. Being actively involved
at TYI I also kept me in constant touch with Yogendra family who constantly encouraged me.

Today I am much calmer, positive, less angry and full of courage and confident. Working as
coordinator and teacher with 1MTTC has only enhanced these qualities. My life has changed
and I continue to walk on this path.

So, I joined the 3 Months Advanced TTC at The Yoga Institute.
Of course, I learned at the Institute a lot about Yoga (both practical and theoretical) but the
more important is that this was done in an immersive yogic atmosphere that gradually
brought my mind to a state of tranquillity.
The knowledge of the teachers is impressive and their sincerity. It changed my perspective

I also saw a comparable change in every of my classmates.

Taking a three months break in a professional life is not so easy and can be challenging; the

 it was worth the sacrifice.

bring about changes in rigid persons’ opinions? The reason is
this: A person who is in a dark room cannot see anything. That
is natural. Only if light is brought, can he see. But we must
remember: If a room is extremely dark and all of a sudden a
very bright light is brought, then one cannot see anything either
                  because one is dazzled.

So it is the same with too much truth that comes too suddenly.
Its glare is too much, and instead of making the poor person in
the dark see, it will only hurt his eyes. So naturally, he will
quickly close his eyes and be unwilling to open them again
before the glaring light is removed. And so- in spite of all the
light – he remains in the dark.
