Buenos Aires

Horacio Rodríguez Larreta was born on October 29th 1965 in the
City of Buenos Aires. He is married to Barbara Diez and has three
daughters: Paloma, Manuela and Serena.
He holds a Licentiate degree in Economics from the
Universidad de Buenos Aires (he graduated in 1988) and a Master
Degree in Business Administration from Harvard University.
                                                                           HORACIO
In 1993 he founded the “Fundación Grupo Sophia”, an NGO
                                                                     RODRÍGUEZ LARRETA

                                                                     Mayor of Buenos Aires
responsibilities. In fact, important Argentinean politicians used to
be part of this NGO. Politicians as the Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires María
Eugenia Vidal or the Minister of Social Development Carolina Stanley among many others.
In 2002 he started to participate actively in politics with Mauricio Macri, with whom in
2003 founded the political party “Compromiso para el Cambio”, political party that
was renamed as “Propuesta Republicana” (PRO) in 2005.
In 2005, when Mauricio Macri was elected as deputy, he was the General Director of the
PRO electoral campaign. Later on, in 2007 and in 2011, he held the same position and, as
a consequence, Macri was appointed Mayor of the City of Buenos Aires.
While Mauricio Macri was the Mayor of the City of Buenos Aires, he worked alongside with
him as Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers of the City of Buenos Aires. During these years,
he stressed the need for a better management of the city as a whole, for a major
investment in new and better public policies. However, the most important value he
stressed for was the closeness with the neighbors of the city.
In June 2015, he was elected as the new Mayor of the City of Buenos Aires till 2019, after
obtaining 53% of the votes. In this new role, he still considers the closeness with the
neighbors as something of extreme importance. This is why, every week, he organizes
meetings in different neighborhoods so as to listen and know what each neighbor thinks
about the place where they live.
Horacio is an unconditional fan of his dear Racing Club. In fact, back in the 1970s, his
father used to be President of this famous football club.

Chicago

Rahm Emanuel is the 55th Mayor of the City of Chicago and has
served since 2011. During that time he has made the tough
choices necessary to secure Chicago’s future as a global capital.
The Mayor lengthened the school day and added more than 200
hours to the school year, taking Chicago from having the least
educational time of any large school district in the country to
                                                                        RAHM EMANUEL

accountability measures to ensure that every teacher and principal had the necessary
resources to succeed. The Mayor’s comprehensive public safety strategy is focused on

empowering parents and communities to reduce violence in their neighborhoods. He
attracted numerous companies to Chicago and helped to build the next generation of
start-ups, while investing in the infrastructure, public transportation, open space and
cultural attractions that make Chicago a great place to live, work, and play. And he has
worked to make our government more effective, to deliver better services at a more
competitive price, and to open government to the public.
Prior to becoming Mayor, Emanuel served as the White House Chief of Staff to President

Rome

I was born in Rome on July 18th, 1978, and grew up in the San
Giovanni Appio Latino neighborhood, where aqueducts and ruins
of Roman walls are still visible. Later in my life, I moved to another
neighborhood, Ottavia, where I still live with my son.
I am grateful to my father and my mother for giving me the
possibility to get an education as a lawyer.
                                                                           VIRGINIA RAGGI
My expertise include civil and judicial law and out-of-court
                                                                           Mayor of Rome
settlements, and particularly intellectual property including
copyright and new Technologies.
I strongly believe in the sacred value of ideas and in the right to protect their property.
I published several articles and case notes in the journal "Diritto dell'Informazione e
dell'Informatica" (Information and Information technology Law), and in 2007 I was
appointed "Honorary Fellow" at the University of Rome "Foro Italico".
I joined the 5 Star Movement in 2011 and, with two activists, I started a 5SM group in the
14th Municipality. In 2013 I was elected City Councillor and, for the whole duration of my
mandate, I was part of the Commission for Culture, Employment and Youth Policies as
well as in Commission for Social Policies and Health.
For a long time I have been considering what the word "politics" means to me: it's about
developing a better idea of society, of civilization, and, as a consequence, a better
administration. It is not a generic and vague idea of "good" for the voters, and even less
the possibility of occupying a seat of power. Politics is not a job, nor a mission: it is the
desire to bring back legality, normality and sustainable progress.

Johannesburg

In January 2016, Mayor Mashaba decided to run for the role of
Mayor of the City of Johannesburg where he has lived and
worked for two decades. Known for being a successful
businessman, rather than a politician, his decision to join politics
was motivated by his desire to use political office to give South
Africans access to opportunities which would allow them to make
                                                                       HERMAN MASHABA
a success of themselves. Mayor Herman Mashaba grew up in
                                                                     Mayor of Johannesburg
poverty in GaRamotse, Hammanskraal. He lost his father at a
young age and his mother was a domestic worker who worked away from home in
Johannesburg for months on end, just to put food on their table. Not having a home of
their own, his family was forced to live in the homes of migrant workers while they were
away working in Joburg. While this was not the most stable environment, it gave Herman
a sense of personal independence from a young age. Despite the mechanisations of the
Apartheid government denying him access to his preferred field of study and career,
Mayor Mashaba has since emerged as one of South Africa’s top business minds,
founding and running the successful hair-care product brand, ‘Black Like Me’. Due to his
leadership and success in the business sector, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate
in Business Administration from the Central University of Technology in 2013. He has
served as director of companies in the construction, real estate, retail and energy fields
prior to entering politics as the mayoral candidate for the Democratic Alliance. Following
the local government elections of 2016, he was elected Mayor of Joburg on 22 August
2016 with the support of the DA’s coalition partners and the EFF. Mayor Mashaba’s
multi-party coalition government is commitment to getting the basics of service delivery
right and delivering positive change to the lives of residents throughout Johannesburg.
Guiding this commitment for better lives for residents are 5 strategic pillars: Growing the
economy and creating jobs – we want to reach 5% economic growth within the City by
2021; Enhancing residents’ quality of life by improving services and taking care of the
environment; Advancing pro-poor development that provides meaningful redress;
building caring, safe and secure communities; and Instituting an honest, responsive and
productive government.
