MEDICAL UPDATE – CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
Situation Report #96
July 24, 2020
This report has been adjusted based on current information provided by state officials. Other related data can be found
on our Early Alert COVID 19 Dashboard and/or Resource Center.
CURRENT STATISTICS AND MEDICAL UPDATES:
• There are now 15,446,800+ cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with over 632,100+ confirmed deaths, which is a case
fatality rate of 4.1%.
• The United States is now reporting 4,017,697+ cases of COVID-19 with 136,475+ confirmed deaths which is a case
fatality rate of 3.4%. This is an increase of 141,082+ cases and 2,165 deaths in the past 48 hours.
• The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is the ratio between confirmed deaths and confirmed cases to measure the severity
of a disease and is not an accurate representation of an individual’s mortality risk.
• Viral tests check samples from your respiratory system, such as a swab from the inside of your nose, to see if you
are currently infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Results from point-of-care tests may be
available at the testing site in less than an hour. Other viral tests must be sent to a laboratory for analysis, a process
that can take a few days. Some jurisdictions are experiencing a high demand for testing, which may cause a delay
in processing tests and providing results. Here is some additional information that may help you make decisions
about getting a viral test:
o Most people have mild COVID-19 illness and can recover at home without medical care. Contact your
healthcare provider if your symptoms are getting worse or if you have questions about your health.
o Decisions about testing are made by state and local health departments or healthcare providers. Visit your
state or local health department’s website to look for the latest local information on testing.
o The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized viral tests that let you collect either a nasal
swab or a saliva sample at home. However, you will still need to send your sample to a laboratory for
analysis.
o If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and are not tested, it is important to stay home.
o At this time, there is no treatment specifically approved for people who have COVID-19.
