MEDICAL UPDATE – CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
Situation Report #106 CORRECTION TO STATS
August 17, 2020
This report has been adjusted based on current information provided by state officials. Other related data can be found
on our Early Alert COVID 19 Dashboard and/or Resource Center.

CURRENT STATISTICS AND MEDICAL UPDATES: (Please note the correction in 72hour totals)
     • There are now 21,598,800+ cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with over 773,900+ confirmed deaths, which is a case
           fatality rate of 3.6%.
     • The United States is now reporting 5,352,057+ cases of COVID-19 with 161,641+ confirmed deaths which is a case
fatality rate of 3.1%. This is an increase of 127,892 + cases and 2,704+ deaths in the past 72 hours.
     • The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is the ratio between confirmed deaths and confirmed cases to measure the severity
of a disease and is not an accurate representation of an individual’s mortality risk.
     • Nationally, the percentage of specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 and the percentages of visits for
influenza-like illness (ILI) and COVID-19-like illness (CLI) have continued to decrease since mid-July.
     • Using combined data from the three laboratory types, the national percentage of respiratory specimens testing
positive for SARS-CoV-2 with a molecular assay decreased from 7.7% during week 31 to 7.0% during week 32.
     • Regionally, the percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 also declined or remained the
same in nine of ten HHS regions. A small increase of 0.2% was seen in Region 2 (NY/NJ/Puerto Rico).
     • The highest percentages of specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 were seen in Regions 4 (South East, 11.5%)
and 6 (South Central, 12.6%). The percentage is declining in both regions following peaks seen in week 28 and 27,
           respectively.
     •     The percentage of outpatient and ED visits for ILI are below baseline nationally and in all regions of the country;
however, ILI activity is above what is typical for this time of year. The percentage of visits to EDs for CLI decreased
nationally for the fourth consecutive week and, compared to the previous week, decreased in all ten HHS regions.
     • The overall cumulative COVID-19-associated hospitalization rate was 144.1 per 100,000; rates were highest in
people 65 years of age and older (394.2 per 100,000) followed by people 50-64 years (217.0 per 100,000).
Cumulative hospitalization rates will increase as the pandemic continues.
     • From week 25 – week 29 (weeks ending June 20 – July 18), overall weekly hospitalization rates increased for four
consecutive weeks. Weekly rates have declined during the most recent three weeks but may increase as more
           data are received.
     • Based on death certificate data, the percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19 (PIC)
increased from week 26 – week 30 (weeks ending June 27 – July 25) after declining for 11 weeks since mid-April.
The percentage of deaths due to PIC for week 32 is 8.1%, lower than the percentage during week 31 (12.5%), but
above the epidemic threshold. These percentages will likely increase as more death certificates are processed.
     • The CDC updated its isolation guidance based on the latest science about COVID-19 showing that people can
continue to test positive for up to 3 months after diagnosis and not be infectious to others. Contrary to media
reporting, this science does not imply a person is immune to reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes
COVID-19, in the 3 months following infection. The latest data simply suggests that retesting someone in the 3
months following initial infection is not necessary unless that person is exhibiting the symptoms of COVID-19 and
the symptoms cannot be associated with another illness. Additional information can be found through the

ASSOCIATED RISK FOR STATES AND COUNTIES: Please refer to the Early Alert dashboard for daily risk levels.
The Early Alert dashboard now displays a map representing the associated risk for states and counties. Risk levels shown
are based on Active Case Rates. (Very High > 350 per 100k, High 140-350 per 100k, Medium 14140 per 100k, Low 0-14
per 100k).
