If you love your work, you will be out there every day trying to do it the best you can, and soon everyone around will catch that passion from you —like a fever. SAM WALTON 2 The Associate’s Guide to Living Better
Welcome FROM THE EDITORS Seeds of Change The 2015 Shareholders’ Meeting was about change, small and big: new badges, adjusting the dress code, a renewed VPI program, and more. The biggest change: Rob Walton, son of Walmart’s founder, stepped down as chairman of the board after 23 years. Rob saw us through many changes (small and big), and always charted a course for growth. For that, we’ll always be grateful. 1 Go by Weight Drink about half your body weight in fluid ounces each day, advises Sarah Richards, registered dietitian for OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio. For a 160-pound person, that works out to 80 ounces, or 10 cups of water. That’s four of these bottles! 2 Eat More Fruit Many fruits and vegetables have a high water content, like watermelons, strawberries, cantaloupe, baby carrots, and celery. “One cup of fresh fruit or cooked vegetables provides nearly half a cup of water,” Sarah says. 3 Add Some Flavor Many people don’t like that 4 5 water lacks flavor, says Andrew Kinder, a certified personal trainer in Wilkesboro, N.C. “I suggest adding low-sugar flavor drops or packets to water to make it more exciting.” 4 Make It Fun Pour flavored water in an ice tray, cover the tray with plastic wrap, and stick a toothpick in each cube. “Kids love water pops in the summer,” says Andrew. 5 Help Your Lawn The experts at Scotts recommend watering your lawn between 6 and 10 a.m. Why? Message Managers The Walmart Store Communications team helps keep store associates in the know. When planning for the Shareholders’ Meeting kicks off each year, the Walmart Store Communications team helps at the store level by contacting store managers and explaining the process for selecting an associate to attend. And as with all messaging the team handles, it’s relayed to stores in a brief, reader-friendly format. To do that, this 21-associate team based in Bentonville, Ark., often wades through—and whittles down—mounds of information. For example, the original document about recent store structure changes came in at 200 pages. The Store Communications team reduced it by 75 percent. Why? To make sure key messages are seen, while allowing associates to stay focused on customers. Each of the team’s five groups manages a different type of message, says Laurie Smalling, senior director. One group produces everything that’s on the WIRE—no small mission, since this website is one of the 100 busiest in the world. The other four groups handle merchandise guides, innovations and procedure changes, corporate news, and human resources and associate engagement. “We know that store associates don’t have much time to spend at the computer,” Laurie says. “Our end goal is to provide them with the right information they need to execute the task at hand successfully each and every time.” From left: Laurie Smalling, senior director; Kirtisha Dewberry, communication manager II; Taylor King, communications manager; Angie Davis, communication manager II; AJ Guevara, project specialist Walmartworld.com 21

Inside Walmart / Spotlight Be the Hero of Your Story ▲ Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., says you’re a superhero—all associates are—and that our shared enemies are things like bureaucracy, complacency, a lack of speed, or a lack of passion. His advice for creating a superhero story: 1. Be obsessed with serving customers. Three months ago, when Ryan Pollock became manager of Store 211 in Hillsboro, Texas, his store’s customer service numbers were the second lowest in the division. So he started a practice called Code Special on Sam. Every midafternoon, he Twitter See Ryan Pollock’s calls a Code Sam, and that’s Shareholders’ Week everyone’s cue to approach tweets, posted June 2 customers and ask for through June 5, at @walmarthub. feedback. They write down the feedback, talk about it as a team, and figure out how to solve customer problems—and it’s working. And now I’m calling a Code Sam. Running better stores today and inventing the future both start by being customer-driven. 2. Speak up. If your job is face to face with customers every day, you need to speak up. We get our best ideas from each other. We always have. 3. Act in ways our kids will be proud of. This means acting with integrity. It’s pretty simple: If you can’t look your child in the eye and be proud of what you’re doing, then you shouldn’t do it. 4. Dial up your personal expectations. Striving for excellence means we make things happen. It means we overcome bureaucracy and mediocrity. It means we hold ourselves and each other accountable for action and results. It means we move with speed as a team. International: Gerson Rodrigo Antonio, a store manager in Brazil, noticed sales were poor every Wednesday when competitors had promotions on fruit and vegetables. So he and his team organized “customer breakfasts” where they sampled fruit, breads, and juices—and now Wednesdays are a top sales day. Walmartworld.com 29
Inside Walmart / My Day People Protectors More than 140 asset protection associates travel to Arkansas every summer to assist with security at the Shareholders’ Meeting. Now in his 14th year of helping out, Jason Pittman of Store 541 in Covington, La., shares what it’s like. Meeting, Plus The Shareholders’ Meeting is like one gigantic company pep rally. Our job is to make sure associates enjoy themselves and don’t have any issues. Shareholders’ Week Duties I help with some of the initial planning, staffing, and logistics for all asset protection (AP) personnel who will come in for support. Once on site, I help manage the day-to-day operations at the command post, which includes monitoring radio traffic between AP associates and communicating any issues or requests. A Team Effort You’re only as good as the people around you. I couldn’t do what I do without the entire team, from managers to people checking badges at the door. The unique thing about it is that you never know what’s going to happen, but we have the right people to get the job done. My No. 1 Piece of Advice The job is not a sprint, but a marathon. And keep in mind that you don’t win them all. u To learn more about jobs and JOB TALK opportunities at Walmart, visit careers.walmart.com. 30 The Associate’s Guide to Living Better

For you. By you. About you. We Are Warm Hearts in Snow Hill Darrell Myers, manager of Store 3037 in Snow Hill, N.C., knows that he and his team of associates are a positive force in their community of roughly 1,600 people. And their focus on service is making a difference. In March, Darrell and his team were awarded the Helen R. Walton Excellence in Community Leadership Award for outstanding service to their community. What kind of service? Under Darrell’s leadership, associates at this Walmart Express store have helped the Greene County Interfaith Volunteers make thousands of meals for students of low-income families; they also gave the $10,000 grant received with their award to this group. Many associates—like Stephanie Satterfield, supervisor, who’s had close family affected by cancer—worked together to raise more than $3,000 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Darrell worked to get the Snow Hill Rural Fire Department a total of $1,500 in grants over the last two years from Walmart, allowing the volunteer firefighters to purchase equipment, like a Jaws of Life, that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. Darrell (now manager of Store 3563 in Bethlehem, Pa.) says that his team’s community endeavors bring them closer to their customers. “They shop with us because of it,” he says. “We hear constantly, ‘Y’all do more for Greene County and Snow Hill than companies that have been here 50 years.’ To hear that is quite humbling.” Lynwood Bunn, Snow Hill Rural Fire Department chief, displays a hydraulic rescue tool purchased with the help of Store 3037 and manager Darrell Myers. 40 The Associate’s Guide to Living Better
