Mondo Zen Facilitator Certificate Program - Program Guide September 2021 - May 2022
The Mondo Zen ™ Facilitator Certificate Program is an eight-month structured learning
environment providing knowledge, mentorship and a community of practitioners for effectively
learning the skills of Mondo Zen™ Facilitation (MZF). The goal of this training is to provide
individuals with the wisdom, compassion, and skillful means required to embody the
transmission of Mondo Zen™ through MZF. The Mondo Zen™ Facilitator Certificate Program
involves a rigorous learning sequence with ongoing mentorship to enhance the knowledge and
skills required to competently guide individuals, pairings and groups. Ongoing reflection,
assessment, and feedback are key to this gateway of learning.

The purpose of this program is to reliably train practitioners in the art of Mondo Zen
Facilitation, including the accurate understanding of Mondo Zen, the ability to transmit the
teachings of Mondo Zen™ using the MZF Core Competencies and the ability to facilitate using
the MZF process in diverse settings. Under the direction of Fugen Tom Pitner, Roshi and Ekai
Joel Kreisberg, the program leverages state-of-the-art training technologies to foster a
community of learners. Students in the program are assessed across a range of five core

Program Completion and Certification
Completion of the program requires a level of competency that will be assessed by Jun Po,
Roshi, Reishin Denise Leong, & Fugen Roshi and/or other senior program faculty designated by
Jun Po. This skill-based assessment goes beyond simply participating in the course. Successful
completion involves demonstrating Mondo Zen™ Facilitation across five domains of core
compentencies along with a formal recommendation that’s brought forward by his or her
Mentor. This assessment is done by students videotaping their Mondo Zen Facilitation, which is
then assessed by faculty.
Completion of the program can lead to several outcomes.

   • Fully Certified Mondo Zen™ Facilitator™ - Individual is recognized as demonstrating
       competency in Mondo Zen™ Facilitation.
   • Provisionally Certified Mondo Zen™ Facilitator – Individual has demonstrated skillful
competency significantly enough to be recognized as a Mondo Zen™ Facilitator.
However, the individual is required to complete designated assignments in order to be
       acknowledged as fully certified.
   • Ongoing Development: Individual has demonstrated skillful means in some core
competencies of Mondo Zen™ Facilitation. However, he or she will require significant
practice and skill development in order to “round out” his or her ability to become fully
       certified.
   • Fail or withdrew – individual has not demonstrated significant skill development to offer Mondo
       Zen™ Facilitation.

                                                  4
Certified Mondo Zen™ Facilitators:

will be qualified to receive a portion of any dana contribution that is made by the individual
receiving the facilitation.
Certified Mondo Facilitators will be required to maintain their skills as a facilitator by continuing

What People are Saying

What I especially loved was my weekly meeting online with two other students. These meetings, which I
initially thought would be more about checking progress, turned out to be heartfelt sharing with others
on the path, people who quickly became good friends. These meetings were an opportunity to practice
deep listening and speaking from the heart. And even with no 'teacher' present, they left me feeling
more centered, more open, and more connected. I shall miss them when the course is complete.

                                                                                     - Bussho Martin Boroson

Participating in the Mondo Zen Facilitator training has breathed new life into my meditation practice.
The more I have practiced facilitating, the more I have seen who I am in relationship to others and the
world slowly aligning to my best self - to the compassionate and aware adult self who not only cares
deeply about the world but has the ability to make a positive impact. I feel as though I am finally
beginning to understand what my first Zen teacher meant when he said that if I really wanted to learn
something well I should teach it.

                                                                                       - ShiShi Shin Greg Tzar

The Mondo Zen certification program provided numerous platforms to work with the technology of the
koans. The organization of the program honoured my and our shared humanity, while also being
completely spiritually resonant. I enjoyed and benefited from that balance. For me, as a guide, or
spiritual friend, the program offered full support as to how to work the Mondo Zen Koan Process with
others in a practical and direct way. The community itself offered much wisdom, caring capacity, and
support, and I enjoyed the program’s many educational and informing facets, rich with benefit for myself
and others.

                                                                                 - Emyo Darlene Tataryn

Even as an “Experienced Facilitator”, I have found that the Mondo Zen Facilitator Program has pushed
me into a deeper level of introspection and retrospection regarding my facilitation skills, not to mention
personal levels of discomfort and attention to details I would otherwise ignore. I’m finding that facing
this discomfort and learning from it, is essential for me to continue growing and evolving my skillful
means. Otherwise, I would likely stagnate where I am, which really isn’t healthy or fun for myself or
those with whom I will be sharing this process. I highly recommend this course to anyone who truly
wants to assess and improve their Mondo Zen facilitation skills.

                                                                                               - Engo Dohi

The Mondo Zen Facilitator Program both deepened and broadened my understanding of what it means
to be a facilitator, by allowing me to have a highly concentrated practice, in-depth conversations, and
guided feedback/support from others invested in exploring the Mondo process. Through better
understanding the Mondo and my being able to share it with confidence, my own practice has taken on a
new dimension. In all, this program is an excellent example of Zen training; insight and application
together support an authentic way of waking up, growing up and showing up in the world.
