NELSON MANDELA DAY
                                       18 JULY 2019
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
                                             Nelson Mandela

Despite 25 years of democracy, South Africa is still at a crossroads in terms of how we educate our children.
Less than 50% of learners who entered Grade 1 in 2007 obtained a Matric Certificate in 2018. Much of our
dropouts and failures occur during our learners’ high school years.

To help stem this trend in some of South Africa’s poorest townships, the Hyprop Foundation and Rhodes
Quality in their fourth year of collaboration will for the first time host the Mandela Day in Gauteng Province
at Clearwater Mall on 18 July 2019.

We invite your organisation to join us on this special day as we work together to write a new story for
education in South Africa.

About LEAP Science & Maths Schools
LEAP Science and Maths Schools is a network of six high schools located in some of South Africa’s poorest
townships. The vision of LEAP is to positively transform these communities through the meaningful education
of children who live there.
These low-fee schools are located in the Western Cape (Langa and Philippi) Gauteng (Linbro near Alexandria,
Diepsloot, Garankuwa) and Limpopo (Jane Furse).
LEAP learners consistently outperform both South Africa’s National and Provincial matric pass rates. Over the
past five years, LEAP learners have achieved an average pass rate of 94% which far exceeds the national
average of 74% over that same period.
LEAP also acts as an enabling hub for a number of community development programmes. Each school adopts
a number of social development projects in their community. It is a requirement that learners and teachers
actively participate in supporting these projects in line with our vision to encourage all our children to be active
agents of social change.

How you can help
LEAP in partnership with ClearWater Mall will be hosting the Mandela Day event on 18 July 2019 in the
ClearWater Mall Piazza where staff of sponsoring organisations and the public will construct one of the largest
food can mosaics ever constructed in South Africa. The mosaic, in the shape of the Nelson Mandela Day logo
will be constructed using approximately 20 000 food cans donated by Rhodes Quality.

We invite your company to become a sponsor by making a donation of R 10 000 or more to LEAP Science &
Maths Schools. For each R 10 000 you donate, we will invite up to 25 of your staff (all dressed in your corporate
clothing if you wish) to volunteer 67 minutes on the day being part of the construction effort.

Our Diepsloot school will perform a special concert of live music and dancing in honour of Nelson Mandela,
and share more about the social development projects LEAP learners and teachers are engaged in. If you do
not have enough staff but still wish to make a donation, LEAP will organise volunteers for you from the public.

After Mandela Day, all the food cans used in building the mosaic will be donated to various social development
projects where LEAP Schools are located.

How will my donation be spent?
Your donation will be going directly to LEAP Schools and the communities it serves. For every R 10 000
donated, the funds will be apportioned in the following way:

    ● R 9 000 will be allocated to fund the education costs of deserving learners
    ● R 1 000 will be used to fund social development projects in the community organised and run by
        LEAP learners themselves.

Beyond Mandela Day, we welcome your involvement as a company more broadly in LEAP’s activities. We
will be happy to host your team on a visit to one of our schools.
