Whangaia ka Tupu ka Puawai
“That Which is Nurtured Blossoms and Grows.”Welcome Ngakonui Valley School is a place that is focused on its core purpose of causing learning. Every opportunity has been taken to create a school that provides real, social and educational experience for each and every one of its learners. NVS prides itself in selecting the right staff who collaborate to ensure the 3 vision principles become a reality for its learners. NVS embraces research and evidence to ensure the best knowledge and competency outcomes for all learners. The philosophy of visible learning embraces the essence of the New Zealand Curriculum. We have a supportive and active community who fully involve themselves in the school life. The staff are friendly, fun and motivated to ensure each learner is stretched and grows from the learning experiences.
Vision
NVS has three vision beliefs that underline the School’s strategic purpose and aspirations of
growing the whole child.
NVS learner- that all members of NVS develop their learning capacity through
goal setting, applying learner competencies and achieve National Standards. E -
learning tools are used to promote and further learning. Understanding progress
as a learner is key to their learning.
NVS thinker- that all members of NVS problem solve, question, investigate and
make decisions using a learning process, thinking tools and a range of learning
strategies to deepen their understanding of concepts.
NVS Citizen- that all members of NVS develop collaborative skills and values to
enable them to actively interact and contribute as effective members of any
community.Our School Values
and Mindsets
“We REAP what We Sow”
Respect and Responsibility- “Understanding”
Effort towards Excellence- “Develop Our Skills”
Achieve with Attitude- “Yes I can”
Participate to Persevere -“Be Active” “Dig Deep”WHY NVS Learner?
Every learner needs to establish strong foundational learning skills in reading, writing,
and mathematics to enable and access further learning.
Learning how to learn is of importance in furthering their learning and to become a life
long learner.
The acquisition and application of learner attitudes better enables learners to know what
to do when they don’t know what to do. Building this capacity is increasingly important
in times of uncertainty, change and challenge.
Putting the learners in “I’m stuck situations” is key to developing their learning capacity
and use of the learner qualities.
Being visible about what progress looks like is engaging and motivating for learners.
Learners, who are empowered to know how they are going and what next, are capable
of fostering further learning.
Building individual’s goals setting capability has a positive effect of learning outcomes.
Access to a variety of e-learning tools further enhances learning and makes learning
more engaging.
NV S L E AR NE RWhy NVS Thinker?
There are no easy answers to future problems. Developing an understanding of a learning
process is critical to help learners solve problems, make informed decisions, answer
questions and investigate.
Learning has been powerful when an individual’s understanding is deepened and
discovered by them.
The intentional teaching of thinking helps learners to make meaning, solve problems and
deepen understandings.
Learners need to develop and grasp global concepts to make meaning of the world they
live in.
We live in a knowledge era. Individuals need to connect knowledge in new and different
ways to solve future problems.
Creating room for student led innovation, entrepreneurship and problem solving
opportunities within the school and wider community is engaging and motivating for
learners.
NV S T HINK E RWhy NVS Citizen?
Students need a learning environment where positive self-esteem is key to successful learning
and students experience success.
NVS Citizens value excellence by celebrating their own and others successes.
It’s important to develop an awareness of the learner’s role in the wider community, an
appreciation of diversity, and a caring attitude for others and the environment.
Learners need to be responsible and connected citizens who are accountable for their own
actions, and have the skills to maintain positive relationships
We want learners to display resilience, coping skills and a positive self esteem throughout
learning and in life.
NV S CIT IZ E NWhat is our NVS
Graduate profile?
NV S Gr aduat e
We believe in beginning with the end in mind profile.
How do we want our students to be when they leave NVS? We would like to see at NVS all our year
8s leaving prepared and ready to take on the world! To go out and make a difference to their lives and
the lives of those they touch!
Dream! Live! Inspire! Take Risks! Have Fun! Laugh! Learn! Think! Care! Be great!
Participate!
If we have followed our vision, focused on the NVS Learner, NVS thinker and NVS Citizen then by the
time our students have finished we want them to believe in the following statement.
“I will make a difference and strive for excellence -in all I think, in all I say and in all I do.”The Profile Explained This Collage of pictures emulates our school and our students. Our Oak tree- strong, courageous, always growing, resilient Our ladders- signs of success and of thinking (how one idea leads to another). Our gardens- where we begin as a seed…and through love and nurturing we grow and blossom into beautiful flowers! Plus, good healthy life styles. The Bull ,the Sheep the gumboots- Our country school, our country values The mounds of dirt, the scooter, the balls- to have fun, enjoy being outside. The wood pit- our creativity our thinking outside the box. Problem solving, designing. Our Thinker, Our learner and Our Citizen profiles –character qualities we want to become and to continue to grow throughout life. Our Maunga- to be strong, to be connected, to know our turangawaewae The sun- no matter what the sun will always come out from behind a cloud and shine! To see the sunny side of life!

NVS PTA
The school is fortunate to be supported by an active parent group, who meet twice a term.
The primary role of the PTA is to foster a strong bond between the community and the school.
Even though some fundraising does occur, this is not the only function of the PTA. Funds will be
raised where necessary to enhance the children’s learning and support the strategic direction of
the school. The quality of the school’s resources, are a fitting tribute to this group’s input over
the years. The meetings provide a forum for enjoyable parent interaction. All parents are
welcome and encouraged to attend.

Acorns transition Programme to school. This involves the child spending time at school to
transition into the classroom. Ask at the office for Mr Young.

school around 8.30am every day and returns at 3.15pm.
Our caretaker, Dave Caddy, drives the second bus in the morning he does the route Symmonds

He does the opposite route in the afternoon.

Discipline: The school believes in a positive approach to discipline. Our Cornerstones Values approach supports this and is used when addressing concerns with the students. In both the classroom and playground, we have steps which are followed when children misbehave. Where behaviour becomes totally unacceptable you will be involved and expected to help us sort out the problem, especially if the rights of other children to teacher attention, time and effort is at risk. We have a formal discipline policy which is available on schooldocs website. Please enter nvs (lowercase) for the username and reap for the password. Dental Treatm ent: All children will be able to attend the dental bus when it comes to our school once a year. For emergencies only contact T uraki School Dental Clinic. Facebook Page: We do have a facebook page…this is a closed group and you will need to request to join. Hearing/Vision: All New Entrant children are tested in their first year at school. Year 7’s are also tested . If you suspect your child has a problem with their hearing or vision please advise us. Head Lice / School Sores: From time to time we have outbreaks of these conditions. We need to be informed when either of these conditions appear. Homework: Homework activities will be orientated towards the completion of work, practise, revision or data gathering and should not require new learning. Homework is to be enjoyable and not stressful on pupils. We believe that suitable homework is part of each child's daily routine and we will encourage children to have a set time each evening for homework. Duration: Junior Room-10 mins. (mainly reading orientated) 4 nights Middle & Senior Rooms up to 30 mins. Mon - Thurs
Houses: There are four house groups named after our valley surroundings: Tuhua (Red)… Hikurangi (Green)…. Mangakahu (Yellow) ….Taringamotu (Blue). All children are placed in a house when they start school and they will generally stay in this house group throughout their time at NVS. All siblings are put in the same house group. One or two year 8 students (depending on numbers) are selected to lead each house. Points are awarded in the classroom, in the playground and at sport events. These are tallied at the end of a term and the winning house has a treat. Over the course of the year the house captains organize fun events such as tabloid sports, marble week and fun fundraising events such as Wacky hair day & Book character days. Injuries: We will endeavour to keep all parents/guardians fully informed should any injury occur, providing we have up to date telephone numbers. If you cannot be contacted medical help will be sought for your child. It is also important that we are fully informed of any special medication, allergies etc. Interviews & Reports: If at any stage you wish to discuss your child/children’s progress or welfare, please contact us for an interview. It is always better to resolve something immediately if you feel there is a problem. Remember a problem shared is a problem halved. Likewise, if we have concerns we will do the same. Otherwise, student led conferences will be held in week 9 every term. Written reports will be handed out at June and December interviews Items not needed at school: Students are asked not to bring lollies or fizzy drink. Cellphones are kept in the school office and are handed out at the end of the day. Library: We have a well-stocked Library and pupils are encouraged to make independent use of it. The children are asked to carry their library books in a plastic bag within their school bag to safeguard against damage resulting from spilt drinks etc. Books that are damaged or lost through carelessness will be charged for. We appreciate your co-operation in encouraging your child(ren) to look after library books and other reading material taken home.
