2016 Nocturne: Art at Night – Motive
Nocturne: Art at Night has been taking over the downtown core of Halifax and Dartmouth for
nine years now. In 2016, this celebration of art and curiosity will be on October 15 from 6pm
to midnight. It is one of the most anticipated events in the Halifax region. This year under the
curatorial vision of Michael McCormack, we have projects and performances from some of
Halifax-Dartmouth’s most loved local artists, galleries and community groups, and some
exciting internationally known artists including but not limited to:

Nocturne: Art at Night transforme le centre-ville de Halifax et Dartmouth depuis 9 ans et c’est
l’un des évènements les plus attendus dans la région. Cette année, les célébrations auront lieu
le 15 octobre de 18h à minuit sous le mandat du commissaire d’exposition Michael
McCormack. Ci-dessus se trouvent quelques noms des nombreux artistes locaux et
internationaux qui participent à Nocturne 2016.
Nocturne: Art at Night is a free annual festival bringing art and energy to the streets of Halifax.
From 6pm to midnight on Saturday, October 15, 2016, you are invited to participate in an event
that showcases and celebrates the arts community in Halifax.

Catch this series of twenty-minute presentations by artists David Clark (Anchor Artist),
Amanda Dawn Christie (Anchor Artist) , Rachael Shannon (Anchor Artist), and Jason Skinner
(Beacon Artist and RBC Emerging Artist), all of whom will be presenting their work during
Nocturne: Art at Night on Saturday, October 15.

INFLATABLE ART & ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP WITH RACHAEL SHANNON
Discover the magic of the living, breathing sculptural form that is Inflatable Art!
Artist Rachael Shannon will lead participants through a brief overview of some of
the applications of this extremely accessible and dynamic art form, and then into
an exploration of basic techniques and materials involved in inflatable construction.
Participants will engage in a collaborative process that will result in making an inflatable piece
to be housed in the gallery for the eve of Nocturne and the weeks following.
Materials provided, but if you bring your plastic shopping bags, broken umbrella nylon, or old
tent pieces, we’ll put them to use!
No experience necessary. In collaboration with the Khyber Centre for the Arts.

Join us at Seven Bays Bouldering on Thursday, October 13th from 6pm - midnight to help kick
off Nocturne: Art at Night! The night will feature Nocturne 2016 Anchor artist Jackson 2Bears
as well as performances from 2015 Anchor Artist, Anna Sprague (Ferris Wheel). DJ Fadzwa
(https://www.facebook.com/DJ-Fadzwa) will be spinning tunes all night, Seven Bays will be
pouring the Nocturne Dark Lager by Propeller Brewery
(https://www.facebook.com/propellerbeer) and Dee Dee’s will be serving their famous
gourmet ice cream (https://www.facebook.com/DeeDees.IceCream).

Nocturne: Art at Night Backgrounder – Qu’est-ce que Nocturne?
Nocturne: Art at Night Society (Nocturne) is a registered volunteer-run not-for-profit
organization committed to bringing art and energy to the streets of the Halifax Regional
Municipality (HRM). Founded in 2008, Nocturne has quickly become a highlight of HRM’s and
Nova Scotia’s fall cultural season, engaging artists, performers, cultural supporters, students,
and families by enabling greater exposure to visual arts throughout the city on both sides of
the Harbour.
Nocturne: Art at Night is based on the Nuit Blanche Festival, which operates in many cities all
over the world.
Nocturne: Art at Night is a fall festival that brings art and energy to the streets of Halifax
between 6 p.m.-midnight. The completely free annual event showcases and celebrates the
visual arts scene in Halifax. The purpose of the event is to bring the community together to
experience and celebrate local artists in the streets, galleries, and public institutions. This
forum gives artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and connect with other artists,
business people and the community at large. The event occurs annually and participating
artists receive remuneration for the creation and installation of their work. We work on
building partnerships with the city and area businesses and government organizations to bring
the city access to art and wonder with no barriers.
Over the past six years, the event has grown substantially in areas such as programming, artist
involvement, attendance and sponsorship. Every year the city of Halifax partners with
Nocturne and that year’s curator to bring art and artists to create fixed points for the evening.
These projects echo the year's theme and create gathering spots to which to explore the
festival from. Since 2013, the festival kicks-off with an opening night in order to provide more
opportunities to engage with artists and to celebrate the artistic community.
Nocturne : Art at Night est un organisme à but non lucratif canadien dirigé par un conseil
d’administration bénévole qui a pour mission de favoriser l’art contemporain. Pendant Nocturne,
l’art s’empare en toute liberté de la Municipalité Régionale de Halifax et transforme la ville le temps
d’une nuit. Cette célébration de l’art contemporain réunit de 18h à minuit des dizaines d’artistes et
milliers de visiteurs. Nocturne : Art at night a été fondée sur le modèle du festival Nuit Blanche.
Nocturne : Art at Night est un festival d’automne gratuit qui permet aux artistes et à la
communauté de se rencontrer. Depuis plus de six ans, le festival a grandi au niveau de sa
programmation mais aussi de sa gouvernance. Chaque année avec le soutien de différents
commerces et organismes du gouvernement, Nocturne met en place un festival qui permet à la
communauté de redécouvrir la ville sous un angle nouveau. Un partenariat avec la municipalité de
Halifax permet d’embaucher un commissaire d’exposition et ainsi d’avoir un thème, fil conducteur,
dans tous les projets présentés.

Launched in 2008, Nocturne: Art at Night facilitates meaningful art experiences that highlight
the arts community in HRM and that engage audiences with contemporary art in the public
realm. The Society aims to present a critical and relevant art events of a high artistic and
professional standard focused on the strengths of the Halifax/local art community and that
includes regional, national, and international representation.
Nocturne: Art at Night is planned and delivered by a volunteer Board of Directors.
The attendance has grown every year to reach 29,000+ people in 2015.
Nocturne: Art at Night’s presence online is one of the highest for a festival in Atlantic Canada
(7 000+ Likes on Facebook, 1 600+ Followers on Instagram and 10,000+ Followers on
Twitter).
Programming on the ferry and providing a free shuttle around the Halifax side of the Harbour
is one way Nocturne aims to making the event more accessible and encourage public
transportation. 5200+ people travelled on the Halifax-Dartmouth ferry in 2015.
2016 is the 9th edition of the festival and will occur on October 13th (opening night) and
October 15th (main event).
Nocturne: Art at Night is a free all ages event in downtown Halifax and downtown Dartmouth.
Programming information and guide will be available on the website –
www.nocturnehalifax.ca. A printed guide will also be released in The Coast on the Thursday
(October 13) prior to the festival.
Depuis 2008, Nocturne facilite le dialogue et la sensibilisation à l’art contemporain dans la
communauté de la municipalité régionale de Halifax.
Chaque année, le nombre de participants augmente. Plus de 29 000 en 2015.
La présence de Nocturne sur les réseaux sociaux est l’une des plus importante pour un festival des
Maritimes. (7000+ j’aime sur Facebook, 1600+ abonnés sur Instagram et 10 000+ d’abonnés sur
Twitter)
Grâce à une programmation sur le traversier et à une navette spéciale pour l’évènement, Nocturne
cherche à rendre le festival le plus accessible. En 2015, 5200+ personnes on pris le traversier entre
Halifax et Dartmouth.
2016 est la neuvième année du festival. Cela aura lieu le 13 octobre (lancement) et le 15 octobre
(évènement principal). C’est un festival gratuit et pour tous les âges.
Un guide sera disponible en ligne et en version imprimée dans le journal The Coast à paraitre le 13
octobre.

Motive: The Curatorial Vision of Michael McCormack
Présentation du thème par le commissaire de l’édition 2016
Michael has an extensive history curating, and is most
well known for his years as director of Eyelevel
Gallery (Halifax, NS). He left Eyelevel to pursue his
Masters of Fine Arts and has since been showing his
work throughout Canada. He recently got home from
two residencies: one in New Brunswick and one at
the Klondike Institute of the Arts in the Yukon and he
was the artist in residence at Centre For Art Tapes in
2016.
"Motive is invisible, comes from the gut, and is continuously morphing while inspiring further
movement of ideas and gestures. It is something that gains traction when shared with others
and gains impact and resilience through inclusiveness and flexibility.
It thrives when faced with conflict, morphs again when allowing questions, and strengthens
further through conversation, mentorship, collaboration, and then consideration."
Michael a été directeur de la galerie Eyelevel (Halifax, NÉ) pendant de nombreuses années avant de
reprendre ses études d'art. Depuis, il a exposé ses œuvres à travers le Canada et a obtenu deux
résidences d'artiste (au Nouveau-Brunswick et dans le Yukon au Klondike Institute of the Arts). Il est
de retour dans la province et a été artiste en résidence au Centre For Art Tapes.
"Motive, c'est invisible et cela vient des tripes. Ça se transforme en permanence en engendrant du
mouvement, des idées. Quand partagé avec les autres, cela gagne de la force et de la flexibilité. Face
aux conflits, on change à nouveau pour amener des questions, une réflexion, une collaboration et

Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones

Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones, is an interactive installation
enabling the public to play the ghosts of radio towers with radio
waves. Architecture, technology, history, and the human body
come together in this near-supernatural conjuring of the spirits of
the Radio Canada International (RCI) shortwave towers.
The production of this work is made possible with the support of the
Canada Council for the Arts and Arts NB.
Requiem for Radio: New Dead Zones un projet qui permettra au public d’utiliser les ondes radios
pour devenir des fantômes des antennes radiophoniques. Architecture, technologie, histoire et
même le corps humain se rassemblent pour conjurer les esprits de Radio Canada International.

For the Land: Nocturne
Halifax Law Courts
For the Land: Nocturne is a continuation of a series that is
inspired by Sioux philosopher Vine Deloria Jr.—in particular, his 1998 book from which the title
of this project is borrowed. The series considers Deloria’s argument about an
incommensurability between Western theology and Indigenous spirituality in that the first is
rooted in a temporal logic, and latter in a ‘spatial’ philosophy.
This project was supported in collaboration with the Centre For Art Tapes.
Jackson 2bears, Janet Rogers et Ronnie Dean Harris présentent un projet autour de l’œuvre du
philosophe Sioux Vine Deloria Jr, plus particulièrement son livre For this Land et de l'argument de
Deloria au sujet d'une incommensurabilité entre la théologie occidentale et la spiritualité autochtone
en ce que la première est ancrée dans une logique temporelle, et la seconde dans une philosophie
«spatiale».

Quantum Pantomime
The collaborative team will work with the Dalhousie School of
Architecture to create an interactive performance using the
entrance and front lawn of the former Spring Garden Memorial
Library in Halifax. The artists will construct an interactive
environment and series of performances that considers the site and it’s existing relationship
with the public as it remains a place of cultural and geographical convergence, transition, urban
life, and public and institutional memory.
En collaboration avec l'École d'architecture de l'Université Dalhousie, Mitchell Wiebe, Roger Mullin
et Ray Fenwick vont créer une performance devant l'ancienne bibliothèque du centre-ville de Halifax
et construire un environnement interactif qui tiendra compte du site et de sa relation avec le public
comme il demeure un lieu de convergence culturelle et géographique, et un lieu de mémoire.

Barometer Falling

"Barometer Falling" is an indoor video installation that
consists of a ten-foot geodesic dome on the 5th floor of the
Halifax Central Library. The dome will play a soundtrack
consisting of a voiceover and musical score reflecting passages from Hugh MacLennan’s 1941
novel “Barometer Rising”.
This project was made possible with the support of Halifax Public Libraries. This research was
supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Born in Sri Lanka and she now lives in Montréal, her practice
are inherently multidisciplinary incorporating drawing,
animation, installation, sculpture and video. For the past few years, Pavitra Wickramasinghe
has been gathering footage of boats that are left immobile: they are sites of potential voyage
made static; to see one that is capsized, on land or frozen in place is a strange and unsettling
site. She will present two projects on Oct 15: KENO/KINO and Last syllable of time - to
explore notions of traveling, memory and what it means to be here. These projects are
supported in partnership with Eyelevel Gallery.
KENO/KINO was made possible by Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Canada
Council for the Arts and Klondike Institute of Art and Culture, Dawson City, Yukon.
Last syllable of time was made possible by La Fondation De La Famille Claudine Et
Stephen Bronfman; UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists and Changdong Art Studio,
National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea.

Breastival Vestibule is living, breathing architecture endeavouring to
engage the senses. Visitors entering the space are met with the soft,
organic forms of its responsive, inflated walls. Gazing through the
structure’s center oculus, the night sky is reframed. Breastival Vestibule shifts the ground rules
for interaction with our surroundings, offering a soft landing amongst city lights and hard
concrete edges. The project and workshops are supported in collaboration with the Khyber Centre
for the Arts.

IKATK:Ee-got-tk (She Protects)
Art Gallery of Nova Scotia
Throughout time music has been used by cultures as an
expression of emotion. It has also been used as a tool to
express political stances.
On October 15th, for 1hr in Halifax at the Art Gallery of Nova
Scotia, Ursula Johnson will join the many artists, individuals,
communities and nations in expressing her political stance of
resistance by engaging in a durational vocal performance of a song that was shared with her
by a strong woman elder from her Mi’kmaw community.
This elder that has taken part in many political movements towards Indigenous Sovereignty
and has taught her throughout the years of knowing her, along with the other women in her
family, to honour and respect her role in society as a Mi’kmaw Woman.
A Mi’kmaw Woman who has the voice to create dialogue, which can result in change. She
appreciates her and her family for this gift.
Depuis la nuit des temps, la musique a été utilisée dans de nombreuses cultures comme un moyen
d’exprimer ses émotions mais aussi son point de vue politique. Pendant une heure, au Musée des
Beaux-Arts de la Nouvelle-Écosse, Ursula Johnson va exprimer son opinion politique en chantant un
chant que lui a appris une ainée respectée de sa communauté Mi’kmaw. Cette femme, qui a pris part
à de nombreux mouvements pour la souveraineté des autochtones lui a aussi appris à honorer et
respecter son rôle dans la société en temps que Femme Mi’kmaw.

This year we are excited to work with RBC Royal Bank of Canada and provide an exciting
opportunity to one of our Beacon Artists.
As selected by RBC, Jason Skinner is named Nocturne's 2016 RBC Emerging Artist.
Jason will be speaking about his project at the Artist Talk taking place on October 11th at the
Halifax Central Library.
Cette année nous avons eu l’honneur de travailler avec la Banque Royale du Canada pour donner à
l’un de nos artistes Beacon une nouvelle opportunité. Jason Skinner a été désigné artiste émergent
Nocturne 2016. Il sera à la rencontre d’artistes à la Bibliothèque Centrale de Halifax le 11 octobre
pour parler de son projet.

experiments. The Halifax Calculations attempted to use advances in psychic computation to
pinpoint the exact moment in history when free will was lost …

and the German Leitmotiv (“leading motive”), from leiten (“to lead”) + Motiv (“motive”),
originally used to describe important thematic elements in Wagnerian opera. Music

Through projection mapping on City Hall, animation and paired audio soundscape will create
wilderness in the Grand Parade.
As Halifax undergoes development and the densification of the city core, the surrounding
wilderness areas and public access to meaningful green space can be impacted.

Nocturne 2016 at the Museum will highlight issues in immigration, migration and naval immigration
history. The three artists participating at the Museum will each provide a unique perspective and vision
to frame these subjects inspired by the theme “Motive”.
Nocturne 2016, au Musée, mettra en évidence les questions de l'immigration, la migration et l'histoire de
l'immigration navale. Les trois artistes participants au Musée fourniront chacun une perspective et une vision
unique pour encadrer ces sujets inspirés par le thème "Motive".

Zwicker’s Gallery will host the official book launch of the new, definitive life of Nova Scotia folk artist
Maud Lewis (1903-1970): Maud Lewis -The Heart on the Door by Lance Gerard Woolaver. The author
will be present Saturday, October 15th, (6-9 pm), to give a short reading & sign copies of the book.
