NORWAY’S NORTHERN LIGHTS WINTER 2018/19 Norway Coastal Voyages and Land-based Adventures in Svalbard
SAILING
UNDER THE On a journey with Hurtigruten, the aurora
borealis comes to you. Sailing in the Arctic Circle
in Norway gives you the best chances to catch the
NORTHERN
lights, so you can stop searching and start seeing.
From the convenience of our observation decks,
you’ll get a front-seat view of the lights, with no
hidden fees to pay to see them. It’s just you and
LIGHTS
the Arctic aurora for as often and for as long as
they appear.
As the original Norwegian coastal voyage, we’ve
been sailing under the Northern Lights since
1893. No one knows them like we do.

These mysterious ribbons
of light in the Arctic sky have
enthralled mankind for eons.
On a voyage with Hurtigruten
IN THE
along the Norwegian coast, the
aurora borealis comes to you.
LIMELIGHT
FACTS...
• The aurora borealis is most commonly seen in
the Arctic, usually within a 2,500-kilometre
radius around the North Pole. This area of intense
Northern Lights activity is referred to as the
Auroral Zone.
• The Northern Lights can appear in many different
forms of light; from scattered patches of diffuse
glimmers, to full arcs, bands, beams and rippling
curtains. Like snowflakes, no two aurora sightings
are exactly the same.
• The phenomenon occurs when electrically-
charged particles from the sun’s outer atmosphere
collide with the oxygen and nitrogen in Earth’s
upper atmosphere. The resulting disruption to
Earth’s magnetic field produces the aurora we see
above us.
...AND FOLKLORE
• Norse legend had it that the Northern Lights
form the Bifrost Bridge – the rainbow bridge that
connected Asgard (the realm of the gods) with
Midgard (the human realm).
• O thers believed the lights were reflections from
the weapons and armour of the Valkyries, the
female warriors who judged who was worthy
enough to enter into the heavenly realm of Valhalla.
• The indigenous Sámi people believed that if you
gazed at the Northern Lights with your mouth
open, the night spirits would enter your body to
claim your soul.

FRILUFTSLIV
Norwegians. Cities tend to empty on
the weekends as Norwegians escape
to cabins in forests, atop mountains, or
beside fjords. Friluftsliv can be described
as a deep yearning to experience nature
on both a physical and spiritual level.
For locals, happiness is being outdoors,
and being outdoors equals happiness.
The winter months are no excuse to
stay cooped up indoors either, and
many will take to their snowshoes,
skis, snowmobiles, and sleds to make
the most of the snowfall.
IMMERSIVE ADVENTURE
With 125 years of friluftsliv on the

we know just where to take you

sense of friluftsliv for yourself. Almost
50 winter excursions await, ranging

—Hurtigruten have become as much a part of the

Tied in with our own sense of friluftsliv, and for the sake

we recognise that we have a responsibility to protect
the areas we travel to. We do our best to minimise our
environmental footprint by using lighter fuel, encouraging
plastic-free initiatives on board, and investing in new
