Our Clean & Green HOme - Jalan Besar Town Council
Chairman's Message
Our Town was the proud host of the Clean and Green Singapore 2017 Carnival on 4 November (pages 4 to 5).
I am pleased that residents attended and gained useful knowledge such as upcycling tips and eco-friendly
 energy conservation methods from environmentalists there. Our actions today will benefit our tomorrow;
starting now, let us all work to build a clean and green environment for future generations to inherit.

The transportation network in our Town has expanded, with the opening of Downtown Line 3 and launch of bus
service 137 (pages 8 to 9). This improves connectivity and convenience for everyone. We have also completed
various improvement works across the constituencies (page 10) to provide a better home for all residents.

We continue to showcase cultural festivals and rites for various ethnic groups in Singapore (pages 14 to 16).
Read on to discover the deeper significance behind these customs, and appreciate the universal values across
 different cultures in Singapore.

Lastly, I would like to wish all residents Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. As we celebrate, let us remind
one another to stay alert and ensure that our neighbourhood remains clean and safe.

 Perutusan Pengerusi

Semasa perayaan,
marilah kita saling mengingatkan supaya sentiasa berjaga-jaga
dan pastikan kejiranan kita tetap bersih dan selamat.

 Taking Ownership for a
 Cleaner Singapore
Cleanliness has to start from within ourselves, residents at
the Clean and Green Carnival 2017 learnt on 4 November.
Held at an open field next to Boon Keng MRT station,
Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam noted
that while Singapore has become a garden city, we are still
reliant on others to clean up after us.

DPM Tharman said: “The only way to solve the problem is
habits – habits have to change, and being mindful of our
neighbours, being mindful of our fellow citizens, and being
public spirited, is what Singapore has to be all about.”

For a start, you can set up a recycling corner at home, which can be a recycling bin or bag. When it is full, simply deposit the
contents into the blue recycling bin provided for in every block. As a general rule, containers should be emptied and rinsed to
remove contaminants such as food waste.

Easier Access to Jalan Besar Town
 Council Office
Walking the talk, Chairman of Jalan Besar Town Council Dr Lily Neo personally led 100 of her Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng residents
to the Jalan Besar Town Council office via the new Downtown Line 3 on 15 October. With the launch, Geylang Bahru MRT
Station is just five stops away from Chinatown MRT Station. Another three minutes walk from Geylang Bahru Station will bring
residents to the Town Council office.

After familiarising themselves with the route, residents were given a mini tour around the office. They were also updated on
upcoming upgrading works and the various services offered by the Town Council. The tour ended on a high note with the
 visitors being treated to lunch.
