UIC College of Nursing EDGE program

                                            OVERVIEW
Goal: Our goal is to expand, strengthen and diversify the healthcare nursing workforce to meet the
needs of the elderly in underserved rural and inner-city urban areas. The EDGE program is designed to
provide a rich learning experience for diverse nursing students with mentoring and guidance by faculty.
At the heart of this course is active, experiential learning in clinical settings and telehealth with
discussion and reflection on the unique qualities and needs of older adults across life phases. The
teaching and learning focus on how nursing students can optimize the health, well-being, and quality of
life of older adults in underserved areas.

Scholarship: $5,300 will be awarded to each student who successfully completes all 3 semesters in the
program. If not completing summer semester, scholarship amounts may be prorated.

Learners: Diverse Nursing Students enrolled in the BSN and RN-BSN program from the University
of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing at three campuses (Chicago (UIC), Springfield (UIS) and
Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the online RN-BSN Program are eligible to apply.
                                            *Diverse Identity*
We invite all students to apply, however special funding preference will be awarded to diverse
students per the federal funding agency goal to increase scholarship and support diverse nursing
students. Please identify any primary diverse characteristics such as age, race, ethnicity, mental and
physical abilities, different genders, and sexual orientation, cultural, life experiences,
personality, general world view/opinions/beliefs, religious, and secondary characteristics such as
nationality, socioeconomic status (low income), and/or first generation to attend college. We
acknowledge that categories of difference are not always fixed but also can be fluid,we respect
individual rights to self-identification, and we recognize that no one culture is intrinsically superior to
another. We also acknowledge geographical location plays a major role in the culture, language,
education, social roles, socioeconomic status, beliefs, and ideologies with which a person is
accustomed. Keep in mind that just because an individual lives in a particular location now, does not
mean they have always lived there. It is important to get to know your rich history to better understand
your unique and diverse experiences in life.

Program Dates: The EDGE program will enroll students in Fall 2021. The Integrated Geriatric
Training Program will begin in Fall 2021 semester and continue through Summer 2022. The course
will include online didactic geriatric education modules, telehealth training and certification, and for
BSN students’ clinical placements with geriatric patients. Students will participate in online
Workshop training.

Expectations and Time Commitment: Students will complete three online geriatric learning
modules (30 minutes each) per semester and will attend a program Workshop each semester and will
participate in online telehealth training through the American Board of Telehealth and receive a
Certificate in Telehealth. BSN student clinical placements will include assigned geriatric patients.
Additional time may be spent with assigned faculty mentor and is determined by the mentor and
mentee. Please note that after each semester students will be asked to complete an online evaluation
survey of the course. Completing the session evaluations is an EDGE course requirement.

Learning Activities: Geriatric learning experiences will include (1) didactic training by online
geriatric learning modules (3 per semester, 30 minutes each) and (2) experiential learning. The
experiential learning includes online telehealth training through the American Board of Telehealth
(earning a certification in telehealth) and for BSN student’s clinical placement assignments will be in

Together, the didactic and experiential learning components address the continuum of care of older

*Rules and regulations for receiving stipend:

Current HRSA Federal Grant (#1 D19HP42698‐01‐00) scholarship restrictions for EDGE Students
include:

    1. If a student receives federal loans, the scholarship may be applied to his/her student loan
instead of being disbursed directly to the student.
    2. Scholarships will be disbursed into students’ UIC accounts, not directly
disbursed to students. To learn more please visit
       http://financialaid.uic.edu/scholarships.shtml
    3. If a student is a Foreign National, existing federal HRSA grant restrictions do not
allow scholarship payments, however, students are able to participate in the program
       without receiving the stipend.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Scholars who are selected and agree to participate in the EDGE program
will be required to fulfill their commitment and Learning Agreement. Declining to participate in
the program after acceptance creates substantial logistic challenges for the organizers and also
takes away the scholarship opportunity from other potential candidates.

scheduled activities are based on student and faculty availability and are subject to change.
Absences will be excused only for health and other serious reasons.

evaluation survey of the program. Completing the session evaluations is a requirement of the EDGE
Program. Please consider applying for this scholarship only if you are able to comply with the above
program requirements
