8Paper 1
Speed & accuracy are essential
Each question to be answered in about
2 minutes or less
Little time for checking of answers
High level of anxiety
Prone to carelessness
9Common Mistakes in Paper 1
Errors caused by mental calculation
e.g. 3 x 3 = 6, 4 + 4 = 16
Use of wrong formula
e.g. Area of triangle = Length x Breadth
Stopping at one question for too long
Shaded wrong answer(s)
10Paper 2
Focus is on conceptual understanding and the
strategies to employ
Method marks are given for steps
All steps must be presented clearly, logically & legibly
Marks could be carelessly lost through incorrect
Maths statements e.g. 24 + 35 = 59 + 41 = 100
11Common Mistakes
Copied wrong numbers from question stems
Overlooked key words/phrases
e.g. each, left, first, remaining, remainder,
at most/least, additional, more/less than
Not leaving answers in the units required
12How can pupils check their work?
Checking of one’s work is not about redoing the
work.
It can be done via:
- Estimation
- Working backward/forward
- Use of alternative methods (where applicable)
13How can pupils check their work?
Through the use of ‘AUSTRA’ (self-assessment checklist)
14Supporting our children
Ensure that your child has a good mastery of
basic concepts and skills:
- Whole Numbers (e.g. multiplication facts)
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Geometry
Discourage over-dependence on use of
calculators
15Supporting our children
Provide an encouraging and conducive
environment for studying
Ensure good work habits
Neat and legible handwriting
Use the strategies taught
e.g. draw diagrams (especially for word problems)
25° Indicate the angles of
reference on the diagram
65° or write the names of the
48° 67°
angles beside the steps.
16Supporting our children
Assist your child in drawing up a timetable for
regular revision & practice.
Let your child practise solving Math questions
and practice papers within stipulated time.
When revising work with your child, consider
using questions such as
- What makes you say so?
- What if…?
- What other method(s) can we use?
