work was so neglected that only

Experts then explained that if it

anali to Lahaul & Spiti Valley will now be connected throughout the year, thanks to the opening
up of the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang. The all weather tunnel is constructed in the Pir Panjal ranges of
Himachal Pradesh. Atal Tunnel reduces the distance between Manali -Sarchu-Leh by 46 kms. This
route used to remain closed for six months in a year as Rohtang Pass is completely snow bound
between November and April.
The South Portal (SP) of the Tunnel is located at a distance of 25 Km from Manali at an
altitude of 3060m, while the North Portal (NP) of the tunnel is located near village Teling, Sissu,
in Lahaul Valley at an altitude of 3071m. Total length of the Tunnel is approx 9.020 Km. It is
horse shoe shaped, single tube double lane tunnel with 8.0m roadway. Drill & Blast technique for
excavation as part of New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been used for the construction
of Rohtang Tunnel. This is now the longest road tunnel in the world at an altitude above 3000m.
Outline Specification. The Rohtang tunnel is approx 9020m in length and constructed at
an altitude more than 3000 m (Approx 10,000 ft) above Mean Sea Level. It is a 10.5 m wide
single tube bi-lane tunnel having overhead clearance of 5.525 m. It has a 3.6 x 2.25 m fire proof
emergency egress tunnel built into the main tunnel itself. This tunnel has been designed for traffic
density of 3000 petrol cars per day and 1500 diesel trucks per day with max speed of 80 km/hr.
It has been designed with a state of the art electromechanical system including semi transverse
ventilation system, SCADA controlled firefighting , illumination and monitoring system.

Some safety features of the tunnel are as mentioned below:-
      (a) Tunnel entry barriers at both portals.
      (b) Telephone connections at 150 m for emergency communication.
      (c) Fire hydrant mechanisms at 60 m.
      (d) Auto incident detection sys with CCTV cameras at 250 m.
      (e) Turning caverns at every 2.2 km.
      (f) Air quality monitoring at every 1 km.
      (g) Evacuation lighting / exit signs at 25 m.
      (h) Broadcasting sys throughout the tunnel.
      (j) Fire rated Dampers at every 50 m
