2020 SEMINAR BROCHURE

     LOCAL SEMINAR COMMITTEE WELCOME
Welcome to The Old Pueblo. Whether this is your first trip to Tucson, or you were here celebrating in 2006, we welcome
you and wish you a delightful experience at Stitching in The Old Pueblo, ANG’s Seminar 2020. Our hotel, the Westin La
Paloma, welcomes you with glorious desert vistas, luxurious accommodations, several pools, tennis courts, and a grand
     golf course.
Tucson is a city that is unique in many ways. It received the first City of Gastronomy award from UNESCO in 2015. For a
unique taste of Tucson try a Sonoran hot dog to dazzle your taste buds, or a prickly pear iced tea.
It hosts the largest gem and mineral show in the world each February. The stitch counter pins crafted for registrants at the
Houston Seminar in 2019 are made from gem show discoveries. The University of Arizona is building the largest space
mirror in the world for the next generation of telescopes to study our universe. UA’s astronomy programs are stellar!
The Tucson area has been inhabited by Indian groups since before 2000 BC. The city itself once belonged to Spain but
was included in the Gadsden Purchase of 1854 which gave the U.S. its present southwest border. This is the rich history
we have tried to bring to life with our stitched logo (artistry by Shirley Burns, a Tucson ANG chapter member).
Within an hour of Tucson, you can embrace the desert beauty of Saguaro National Park or seek the cooling heights in a
tour of Mt. Lemmon. Traveling to other directions brings you from the past to the future, from Tombstone, The Town Too
Tough to Die, to the Biosphere which gives us a glimpse into the capability of a closed ecological system to support life in
outer space. And, of course, the international border with Mexico is about one hour’s drive south of Tucson.
Many famous people have called Tucson home. Singer/Songwriter Linda Ronstadt comes from an Old Pueblo family.
Tucson was once home to actors Lee Marvin and Barbara Eden, astronaut Frank Borman, author Barbara Kingsolver,
and Joan Ganz Cooney, the creator of Sesame Street. (So that’s why Oscar the Grouch looks like one of the cacti
     growing outside our windows!)
With our stitching we have tried to show you the color and vibrancy of this city with its mixture of cultures, flavors,
music, art and architecture. We are proud to call this city home and to make you welcome here for ANG’s Seminar 2020
     Stitching in The Old Pueblo.

Toni Gerdes

This O’Keeffe Kimono combines Georgia O’Keeffe’s love of the southwest and her
depiction of large flowers. At the top of the kimono is the Pedernal Mountain that
Georgia painted so many times with the beautiful Chama River flowing from the
mountain and into the lush grassy plains. At the bottom of the kimono is a beautiful
red poppy. This is the fourth in my series of artist kimonos that can be created as a
kimono or with explanation and permission, a rectangle.

Pearlessence
Kay Stanis
30819 Saturday–Monday, August 8-10, 2020
“The unique luster of pearls depends upon the reflection of light through translucent
layers. The iridescence that pearls display is caused by the overlapping of successive
layers, which breaks up light falling on the surface.” (Wikipedia) We will interpret this
layering in a literal way by working layer on layer, bringing the blossom to life. This
class will explore a variety of techniques: chipping, S-ing, aerial couching with beads,
plus the application of sequins with and without beads.
Proficiency Level: Intermediate
Design Size: 8" x 10"

                Once In A Blue Moon
                Toni Gerdes
                20607 Thursday–Friday, August 6-7, 2020
When the sun has set and the moon is full over the ocean, a special blue cast comes
over the earth that is both a little spooky and beautiful at the same time. The second
full moon of the month is often referred to as a blue moon. Since this only happens
occasionally, the phrase, Once in a Blue Moon, came about. This design creates a
band sampler of the varying colors of the sky over the fabric appliqued ocean.

Four Square Diamonds
Susan Reed
20612 Thursday–Friday, August 6-7, 2020
Patterns, stitches, and various threads create this challenging design of four squares
containing diamonds. The center crescent diamond is worked in hand-dyed and
solid threads. Two background stitches in the squares subtly suggest two shapes:
diamond and octagon. The softness of couched metallic braid and satin stitches that
border the diamonds continues on to frame the herringbone pattern. This herringbone
extends into the arms and is mirror-imaged for the square border. A quiet outer border
of satin and shaded long-arm Greek cross stitches completes the design.

                Melinda Sherbring
                20817 Saturday–Sunday, August 8-9, 2020
This sampler showcases one outline stitch and five filling stitches used historically
in Mediterranean voided embroidery panels, a style revived modernly as Assisi
embroidery. The main design elements are based on Renaissance Italian illuminated
manuscripts, characterized by white entwined vines and exuberant flowers and leaves
against a monochrome background. Participants will choose their own filling color:
                blue, red, yellow, or green.

                Through A Garden Window
                Susan Reed
                20912 Sunday–Monday, August 9-10, 2020
The vibrancy of color blossoms in this design. The Japanese braid, stitched in warm
colors of silk, creates texture as the braid is mirror-imaged and rotated. To offset
the texture, the background is stitched in various plies of silk to create secondary
patterns of diamonds. Couched silk braid pulls in the main color and emphasizes the
background diamonds. The colorful inner border, which echoes the vibrant motifs, is
edged by long-armed Greek cross and finished with an outer row of Japanese braid.
