BACKGROUND – PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCE

Summary of Findings Since March 2020
  • Children get COVID-19 less often and are less ill than adults
  • Children most often get COVID-19 from a household adult, even when
attending school (Studies in Greece, Australia, China, Switzerland,

  • Schools can operate safely and successfully when key safety measures
    are in place (e.g. masks)

COVID-19 PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDANCE FOR K-12 SCHOOLS
The foundational principle of this guidance is that all students must have access to safe and
full in-person instruction and to as much instructional time as possible.
• Vaccination for all eligible individuals
• Universal masking in schools, which enables no minimum physical distancing
• Allowing all students access to full in-person learning
• More targeted quarantine practices, keeping students in school
• And access to a robust COVID-19 testing program as an available additional
  safety layer
• November 1, 2021: CDPH to assess and decide to update mask requirements
                                                                                         PAGE 7
