Introduction

Background
Forgood is a social network with purpose, connecting people based on their interests and their
location to opportunities to take action for good in their communities. Forgood was launched in
June 2011 as the back-end of a national campaign for Brand South Africa (IMC) called Play Your
Part. People were directed to forgood to find ways to play their part in building a better South
Africa. Forgood was also the back-end for Mandela Day 2011. The Mandela Day website directed
people to forgood to find specific Mandela Day activities.

In June 2011, Pick n Pay committed to sponsoring ten R500 gift vouchers per month for a period of
3 months for the forgood rewards programme. Over this period, forgood has increased their
membership and many great stories of people connecting for the good of SA have unfolded. To
date, forgood has:
    • Groups / Organisations: 530
    • Members: 2180

Still to come
In the next few months, forgood will be launching:
    • The forgood marketplace where people can view and contribute to specific needs or they
can offer something to other members of forgood
    • The forgood knowledge hub where people can access practical information on things they
can do to make a difference in their communities.
    • The forgood brand so that people begin to recognizing forgood as a platform for initiating
        social change.

Feedback
Presented in this document are the groups that have been awarded R500 gift vouchers over the
last 3 months to go towards to work they are doing in their respective communities. Another 10
vouchers are still available to use for the coming month.

Forgood incentivises people’s participation on the forgood social networking site with rewards
that matter. The more a member participates, the more points they get. Once they reach a certain
level of points, they get to claim their reward. They get to “give” a Pick n Pay voucher to a group or
cause on forgood and they “get” a token reward for themselves.

The following groups received Pick n Pay vouchers through this process.

A small group from a local church started this school with the purpose to provide standard
education and teaching life skills to children grade 0 – 3 in Olievenhoutbosch. Olievenhoutbosch is

education for the local children. The remedial class is the only facility in the vicinity, to cater for
children with special needs. The school realizes that the development of art, sport and recreation
is very important. Parents are equipped with parental skills and encouraged to make use of
opportunities to increase their income or to learn new skills in order to provide for their families.
The school offers one meal daily to the children and they furnish 20 families with monthly
groceries.

How the Pick n Pay voucher will be used
The voucher will be used for food items for the learner’s sandwiches and lunches during break and
after school. We will also buy some food items (e.g. mieliepap, rice, pasta) for the families in our

Boost Africa Foundation
Group Contact
Yonelani Msindo

Group Description
Boost Africa Foundation assists children together with their families living in extreme poverty to
stay in school. This initiative aims to establish leadership and role models in these communities
through education.

The drop out of children from school at a young age has a huge impact on the community,
especially on crime levels. Children not attending school easily become involved in gangs,
prostitution and drugs. Boost Africa Foundation believes that education fights crime and poverty
and is the key to effective long term social development.

They provide children with the basic requirements necessary to attend school and also aim to
establish a sustainable learning centre that provides quality educational resources to improve the
numeracy, literacy and skills development of the youth in the community.

The voucher will be used to buy toiletries for Boost’s ‘Keep a Child in School’ families.

And some more feedback from groups after they spent
their vouchers:

From Olievenhoutbosch Christian School
Thank you so much for choosing Olievenhoutbosch Christian School to give the R500 Pick&Pay gift
voucher to. It went a long way in blessing the learners of the school and the community. Thank
you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit.

The voucher was spent at Pick & Pay, Lifestyle Centre, Centurion, as follows:
   1. Stationery for the teachers e.g. red pens.

   2. Food for the children (we provide sandwiches during break and lunch after school for the
children who come to school without food). Thank you for the jam-spreads we were able
      to buy!

3. We were able to provide some food for families without any income (e.g. mielie meal, salt,
      stamp mealies).

   4. We bought some story books for our library!

From Barnswallows Baby Shelter
We used the voucher to buy food items and consumables at PnP Clearwater. 2 Days before we
received the vouchers, we were overwhelmed with 3 extra kids who were very deprived and
neglected and had to be fed all around the clock – this helped us so much – we could not have
done without it! Just at the right time!

A great big thank you to you and your team – we appreciate the work you are doing, especially for
start-up NPOs like ourselves. We do not get any government funding and have to rely on the
public for donations like these.
