We are not just afraid in the stereo typical scenarios; we’re not just afraid
when a van pulls up next to us; afraid when it seems a taxi has been waiting
for too long; afraid when we see a man near the playground whose presence
we can’t account for; afraid when a group of boys are gathered, blocking the
narrow alleyway that should be our safe passage home.
We are wary of walking home alone, be it day or night, or being told that
skirts shouldn’t be too short. We are afraid of being told it was our fault,
that we were “asking for it”. This is our reality. But we shouldn’t have to be
scared, and we shouldn’t have to adapt our behaviours to avoid having
conversations that may be uncomfortable to boys or men.
The case of Sarah Everard just made public what we already knew - that

Following the murder of Sarah Everard, we wanted to acknowledge that, as
Senior Prefects, we will do all we can to facilitate this conversation. We will
try to give you the best tools to call out the everyday misogyny we are all
confronted with, and we want you to know that, if you feel unsafe, Rosebery
is always a safe space you can come to. We are not women, fighting men.
We are women fighting the patriarchal system that oppresses us both.
1As an all-girl school, we feel that it is equally important to try and facilitate
these conversations happening elsewhere, whether that’s at the local boys’
school, or simply around the dinner table. Every time we choose not to
speak up about our experiences, every time we choose not to condone
catcalling and this systematic misogyny, we change the culture.
We, as, and on behalf of, your daughters, are not writing this as young
women wishing to ostracise or villainise boys and men. We are writing this
as young women who are utterly exhausted from living in fear and of
constantly adjusting our behaviour. We are exhausted of side-stepping
conversations around educating boys in an effort not to make them
uncomfortable. In doing this, we continue the narrative that it is women
who must constantly shift to accommodate the needs of men and boys,
even in a conversation about our own safety.
As a team, we are passionate about giving students the tools to discuss this
conversation outside of school, and we will be providing more information
and discussion points to get everyone involved in this important
conversation. Teaching your child to be

There is a competition currently running at Young Fashion Designer
UK: http://youngfashiondesigneruk.com/register-online-359/.
This competition is open to 11 - 18 year olds and it would be great to see
some Rosebery student enter (the deadline is 28 May). The details:
'Athleisure’ is a trend that is here to stay. With many brands and designers
offering a range of athletic leisurewear alongside their existing collections,
businesses are seeing a rise in sales of the comfy, yet stylish, relaxed look.
Alongside this trend, top UK designers are going the extra mile to ensure
their collections are sustainable. Whether it be through the use of more
sustainable fibres, fabrics and production techniques, or recycled fabrics
and garments to impactful statements, slogans and design features; they
promote a powerful message about sustainability.
It is important that we, as young designers, also do our bit!
For Young Fashion Designer UK 2021, we are looking for students aged
11-18 to produce THREE pages of work for our panel of industry
professional, who judge the competition, to see. Those entering will need
to produce:
• a mood board of RESEARCH about Athleisure and include an area of
Sustainability that you wish to explore.
• a page of DEVELOPMENT that may include initial sketches, samples,
pattern or print ideas.
• FOUR OUTFIT DESIGN IDEAS on your final page. Annotate your sketches
to explain your ideas.
If you are interested in entering but would like to discuss any ideas, please
come to R14 or the DT office to speak to Miss Haggis or Miss Shillito.
DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
The Design and Technology @ Rosebery Google Site is up and running
(with regular additions). The home page also has upcoming Food
Preparation and Nutrition dates viewable (Years 7 - 11). The site includes
support materials for subjects, including video demonstrations, recipe
sheets and support booklets. There is also a specific section for students to
upload photographs of their work outside of lessons. This currently has
food photographs, but we would love to include all areas of DT here. The
site is aimed at Rosebery students and, as such, can only be accessed
through a Rosebery Google account (which students use to access Google
Classroom): https://sites.google.com/rosebery.surrey.sch.uk/dtrosebery/home

In Geography this week classes from Year 7 to Year 10 have been learning
about the UK census in preparation for this Sunday, 21 March 2021. We
have discussed why taking part in the census is a chance to help make sure
students and their community get the services they need for the next ten
years and beyond.
In class our students have followed the journey of Frederick John Boundy,
through the census from 1891, 1901, and 1911 looking at how his life 7
changed over time, discussed how data helps services to be delivered, such Sara V 7EX, Jess K 7MX,
as ‘Why did Mrs Saber get her COVID-19 vaccination before her twin Suraya K 7CX, Rowan W 7MX,
sister?’ and explored their own family trees. The students impressed us Zara R 7CY, Louise B 7EY,
with their observations and questions on the role of women, types of jobs Evie B 7PX, Olivia B 7EY,
recorded and why this may be the UK’s last census. Sophie L 7EY
We have encouraged students to have discussions at home about their
