Boys and Girls red and yellow belts with little or no competition experience and who are unsuited for
mainstream events. Examples of conditions would include autism, Aspegers, anxiety issues and dyspraxia. This
is not an exhaustive list and medical evidence is NOT required. However, simply being an inexperienced judo
player is NOT a reason to enter, the event is for those who could enter mainstream events but may struggle
with them due to their conditions and needs.
Players should not have previously entered mainstream events, or a significant number (generally more than 3)
of SN or Adaptive events. This event is intended for comparative beginners at competition.
This is aimed at Level 1-2 adaptive players but may be suitable at coaches’ discretion for some Level 3 players.
All players will be sorted into categories of 4 or 5 where possible after weighing in. Every competitor will
receive a medal. Players will be divided by weight and age and by level of needs, all will be to ensure that they
all get a fair and enjoyable experience against suitable opponents.
Unlike our usual events, we will be looking to have a limited number of players in order to make the event less
busy and even more relaxed than usual.
Notes: We are relying on coaches to enter players of suitable ability and/or needs levels. If you have any doubt, please
contact Andrew to discuss. We reserve the right to decline any entry considered unsuitable.

Charity Judo Championships
Saturday 6th June 2020
Samurai Judo Club, Zortech Avenue, Kidderminster DY11 7DY
Nightstop is a Wyre Forest charity (charity registration number 1117775) providing emergency
accommodation, food and toiletries to young people aged 16-25 to alleviate homelessness in the
area. 100% of the entry fees will go to the charity, less a total of £200 for the cost of medals. Venue
will be donated for free and any officials costs will be covered by the club. Clubs and individuals are
invited to sponsor categories (£10 per category) which will also go to the charity.
For many years, Samurai Judo Club ran an annual charity event, but had to put these on hold when
building our new premises. Now the building is complete and finances are settled, we are pleased to
be able to return to running an annual event supporting local charities. This is the second such
event, the first being the Bev Teams last year in aid of Craig Fallon’s son, which raised £600. The
target is to raise £500 at least, but with support it could be a lot more.

Name Group (A/B/C) Age Weight Category GradeDan Grade Theory Course & Exam
Sunday 22nd March 2020
Samurai Judo Club, Zortech Avenue, Kidderminster DY11 7DY
The course, run by Ben Newbury, will cover all of the requirements for contest dan grade theory up
to 4th dan going for 5th dan. Candidates are advised, however, that there is a lot to take in and they
should make some attempt to learn what they can before the course. In one day, a course can only
act as a refresher and a clarification of areas of confusion and the less well known techniques, as
well as explaining what examiners look for. A partner is useful but not essential.
Once the single techniques and one set of each type of combinations have been covered, 1st
kyu players can take the examination. The examiner will be Andrew Haffner, Senior Examiner 195
(who was part of the panel which revised the dan grade syllabus and is chair of the National
Promotions Commission). Meanwhile 1st dan players will go through another set of combinations,
after which they can take their exam, and so on. The course will include a brief overview of a set of
nage no kata for each dan grade (the 3rd set for 1st dan, the 2nd set for 2nd dan, the 1st set for 3rd dan)
and a set of katame no kata for 3rd dan (the 2nd set, shimewazas), but candidiates should have
studied some kata before the day in order to do well. It is recommended that candidates seeking
3rd, 4th or 5th dan should have attended a prior kata course unless they are experienced in kata; we
will only have time to briefly revise the kata on this course.
There is no guarantee that candidates will pass the exam, but our courses do have a very
good history of preparing candidates well, as well as being related to contest and technical judo and
hopefully being informative, interesting and friendly. As well as being competitive 4th dan with
outstanding knowledge of the syllabus, Ben is a BJA National B Referee and former British Kata
Champion and has run many similar successful courses in the past.
Candidates seeking technical dan grade exams can be examined on the day, but the course
will not cover the specific requirements.
Eligibility: players must currently hold the grade below the grade they are going for (e.g.
must be 1st kyu if attempting 1st dan theory) and must hold current BJA membership which must be
produced on the day. Only one theory grade can be examined on the day – for example, players
cannot do both 1st dan and 2nd dan theory.
To book a place on the course, simply email us at samuraijudoclub@yahoo.co.uk or
telephone/text Andrew Haffner on 0776 1122977. Please give your name and current grade. Course
fee of £15 (or £5 for exam only) will be payable on the day.Midland Area Referee Education Module
