squad at SLMS is the amount of time and energy involved. You must be committed to the team for the
entire season (August-February) and it must be a priority. This includes practices, games, competitions,
and the county fair.

Thanks for your interest in becoming a Stallion Cheerleader! We look forward to seeing you at tryouts!

Cheer Paperwork Directions
Thank you so much for your interest in joining our SanLee Cheerleading Squad! We know the paperwork can be
overwhelming, so here’s a checklist:
✓ Make an appointment for a ‘sports physical’. Physicals are good for 1 calendar year. Take the paperwork with you
for the doctor to fill out. This must be done prior to tryouts!
✓ Have your parents help you fill out the concussion form. There are parts for both you and your parents to fill out, so
       read it carefully.
✓ Have your parents fill out the student insurance and waiver form.
✓ Take a teacher recommendation to ONE CURRENT CORE TEACHER and ONE OTHER TEACHER OF YOUR
       CHOOSING.
o You need to provide them with an envelope with your name on the outside.
o You also need to have your name and homeroom teacher’s name filled out on the top of the
                recommendation.
o You will NOT touch the recommendations from your teachers again from this point. They will put them in
our mailbox or give them to us directly.
✓ Fill out the student recommendation for yourself. Really put some thought into this. Remember, we can teach you
to cheer, we can’t teach you personality. Put it in an envelope with your name on the outside and return it to Coach
       C. Reed (6th) or Coach McNeill (7th). 5th graders need to ensure that you turn your entire packet into the front
       office.
    ✓ Tryout Information Sheet
✓ Sign the Student/Parent Agreement and Information Sheet.

Paper work may be given Coach Reed in 617 (6th graders), Coach McNeill in 715 (7th graders), or placed in our mailboxes.
5th graders need to ensure that you turn your entire packet into the front office. (Attention: Mrs. Reed or Ms. McNeill)
Please be sure to place it inside a large envelope, and that the envelope has your name and school on the outside. This
will make the tryout process go much smoother on the first day. Please do not stop by our rooms during class, please come
before homeroom or at the end of the school day. If all paperwork is not filled out, then you will be unable to tryout. Please
have all paperwork turned in by June 6, 2019.

SanLee Stallion 2019-2020 Cheerleading Rules and Guidelines
Be punctual, prepared, and pumped to be a team player! Following these rules will ensure that we have a successful
2019-2020 cheerleading season!
● Cheerleading is a yearlong commitment for the cheerleader and the parents. Your participation is expected
all year unless you play soccer or volleyball in the spring . This will include selling concessions for open
    house, spring sports, etc.

Attendance
● A calendar of practices, games, and events will be given at the beginning of each month. Game days vary
according to the sport. You attendance at all games, and other events are mandatory.
● ABSENCES CAN BE THE DOWNFALL OF A GREAT CHEERLEADING SQUAD! If one or more squad members
are absent from a practice or game, the other members are forced to make last minute changes. This can be both
stressful and dangerous to squad members.
● If at all possible, appointments should be scheduled around SLMS cheerleading. This is your priority.
● Contact the coach directly if there is any problem with meeting any of the obligations of this squad. Do not go
    through another cheerleader or friend.
● If you commit to cheerleading you are committing to attend every game. Unexcused absences are those caused by
anything other than illness or family emergencies. In addition, just because a cheerleader asks to be excused
doesn’t mean that the excuse will be granted.
● If you are ill or have a family emergency, the coach needs to be notified by a parent or guardian in order for this
absence to be excused. Please notify the coach before the absence or as soon after as possible; only under
extreme circumstances will prior notice not be expected.

Expected Behavior
● You must be a model student-athlete, both in school and out of school.
o This especially applies when you are wearing your SanLee Cheer attire. You represent SANLEE MIDDLE
and OUR CHEER SQUAD, so make sure you are sending the right messages.
o While representing SLMS, cheerleaders must not:
           ☹ Show unsportsmanlike conduct
           ☹ Use profanity
           ☹ Show displays of affection
           ☹ Be academically dishonest
☹ Post pictures on ANY social media site while in uniform outside of a scheduled event.
☹ Post anything that is distasteful or could cause issues within the squad.
o If any of the unsatisfactory behavior is observed, you may be removed from the squad.
o Part of a coach’s job is to know where you are at all times during practices, games, and special events.
Consequences will be issued for failure to follow the coach’s direction or to stay in assigned areas during
       events.
● Any ISS referrals are subject to loss of practice and game privileges. If you receive ISS more than 2 times you will
   be removed from the team
● OSS will result in immediate dismissal from the squad at principal discretion.

Grades
● You must be maintain a “C” average or above in all classes.
● Because cheerleaders are students first and athletes second, progress reports will be turned in so the coach can
monitor academic progress, we will be checking power schools bi-weekly.
● If at any time you are failing a class, you will be required to attend tutoring, and failure to attend tutoring will result in
   benching.
● From the time the failing grade is written on the progress report, you have two weeks to pull the grade up to a C
before a more severe consequence is given.
● If you need to stay for tutoring in a subject, please notify one of your coaches prior to staying.
Uniforms
    ● Uniforms are issued by the school and are property of the SLMS Athletic Department. If for at any reason a
cheerleader quits or is dismissed, he/she is expected to return all uniforms/equipment within five days of the
       termination.
    ● Washing instructions will be provided when uniforms are distributed. At the end of the cheer season, uniforms
are to be turned in washed.
    ● You are not to alter your uniform.
    ● Damaged or lost uniforms will be replaced by the cheerleader.
    ● A cheerleader may not represent another sport (soccer, track, baseball, etc) while in uniform.

Fundraisers
We have one fundraiser that last the entire school year. The cheerleaders are responsible for the concessions
at all school events and games. This allows for us to pay for t-shirts, field trips, competitions, and other needs that
may come up for the squad. This will require a commitment from each of the cheerleader’s families. A
meeting will be held at the beginning of each season, so that parents may sign up for a time to work concessions. If
everyone volunteers you will do no more than 4 rotations in the concession stand for the year.

Extra Information
● While safety is our number one goal, please understand that you should expect bumps, bruises, and other
occasional minor injuries. This is all part of cheerleading.
● Periodically, you will be responsible for providing the team with nutritious snacks at games. A schedule will be sent
    with your assigned time.
● Cheerleaders/Parents are always welcome to discuss concerns with the coaches.
● You and your parents are responsible for meeting all financial responsibility associated with necessary cheer attire.
Once paid for, these items are yours to keep!
