SAVE THE DATE! Crossing the Carolinas 2023 CAR Spring Seminar June 2 - 4, 2023 Clemmons, NC Join us for a fun and stitch-filled weekend in Clemmons, NC, at the Village Inn once again. We have some great classes planned with national teachers. Also, tours of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Old Salem in Downtown Winston Salem will again be led by their knowledgeable staff. Come a day early for the Thursday afternoon tour or arrive early on Friday for a morning tour. Each museum tour will take approximately an hour and includes about 30 minutes with the Curator of Moravian Deco- rative Arts looking at the Ornamental Arts taught at the Salem Female Academy and another 30 minutes with the Cura- tor of the MESDA Textile Collection looking at their needlework collection, focusing on those that are recent acquisi- tions. The tour fee is $25.00 + tax per person. Maximum participants: 11 people per tour. Tours will take place mid-afternoon on Thursday, June 1st, and at 10:30 am on Friday, June 2nd. CLASSES ARE AS FOLLOWS: Japanese Bead Embroidery: Whirligig Treasure Chest Mary Alice Sinton Mary Alice Sinton began studying Japanese Embroidery in 1990 and traveled twice to Japan to study at Kurenai-Kai. She was certified to teach Traditional Japanese Embroidery in 1999 and Japanese Bead Embroidery in 2004 through the Japanese Embroidery Center (JEC) in Atlanta, GA. She taught Young Student’s class at the JEC from 1995 -2005. She teaches Japanese Silk & Bead Embroidery at several venues in and around Texas and west of the Mississippi. Mary Alice holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from Stephens College of Columbia, MO. She began her needle arts career studying Hawaiian Quilting while living in Hawaii for five years. She has won many interna- tional awards with her Hawaiian Quilts through the years. Mary Alice continues to teach Hawaiian quilting locally in Houston, TX, at the Quilter’s Emporium. The Whirligig Treasure Chest is done in Japanese bead embroidery method and is an entry level piece. Bead Embroi- dery in the Japanese method incorporates silk embroidery techniques translated with beads. The wooden presentation box that the Whirligig is displayed in is by Sudberry, and is included in the kit along with beading Koma. The beads used are a wide variety of Tri-cut and glass seed beads. The technique of using a Beading Koma to couch down lines of beads in order to create smooth curves is explored in this piece. The foundation fabric is a floral pinwheel 100% cotton fabric called Safari SO Goodie by Wilmington Prints stitched using stretcher bars. (Box Lid design © Mary Alice Sinton). ...CLASSES continued: Blush Peony Shawl Pin and Coordinating Necklace and Bracelet Pat Olski Revisit an exciting heritage craft technique that is fun to learn and is a great stash busting craft. Dorset button making is a useful and creative way to embellish embroidery projects, fasten clothing items, and make gorgeous jewelry. Students will learn how to ap- ply traditional button making techniques to create a lovely shawl pin, coordinating necklace and bracelet. Students will have a choice of 3 colorways and a choice of silver or gold metallic thread. The class Includes a slideshow and entertaining lecture about traditional Dorset button history, as well as an introduction to all the heritage steps used to create thread wrapped treasures. Project: Blush Peony Shawl Pin is approximately 2.75” x 1.5”; fastening pin is about 4“ in length. Custom Dorset Pendant (design TBA): The pendant measures 1.5” in diameter. The twisted cord necklace can be made to any desired length and features a slider knot closure. Embroidered floral Dorset button bracelet: The Dorset button and rings portion of the bracelet measure 2” across. The twisted cord bracelet can be made to fit any desired size and is fastened with a slider knot closure. Pat Olski is a professional needlecraft designer, writer, lecturer, and instructor. Her designs and articles, which span an array of topics from traditional needlework techniques to current knitwear trends, have appeared in many books and magazines including Piecework, Needle Arts, Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, and Australia’s Inspirations Magazine. She loves to teach, and has taught sold-out classes in knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and Dorset button making for years at events including Vogue Knitting Live and Knitters Day Out, and the EGA National Seminar 2022 (NYC-mini class) and 2023 (Boston, Ma). She is the author of ten yarn craft books; her newest book, Crafting Thread Shawl Pins was pub- lished in May 2022. Her history, reference, and project-based title, Creating Dorset Buttons, will be published in winter 2022-23. Pat is also the new editor of Piecework magazine. ...CLASSES continued: Sea Treasures (Embroidery/Canvas) Dawn Donnelly Dawn Donnelly is a mixed-media artist with a focus in needlepoint. She holds a teacher certification in canvas with the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN) and teaches nationally and locally for NAN, American Needle- point Guild (ANG), and Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA). Dawn has been recognized for her excellence of work in numerous exhibits. Some of her time is spent vol- unteering as membership chair and registrar for NAN, treasurer for National Embroidery Teachers Association, and president for ANG’s Magnificent Obsession Chapter. Several of her articles have been published in Needle- point Now and Needlepointers. Sea Treasures contains a variety of items that have been washed up from the ocean. After transferring the base lines onto the linen, the student will bring the ocean visi- tors to life using Stem Stitch, Ribbed Spider’s Web, Nee- dle weaving, Eyelet, Buttonhole Rings, French Knot, Feather, Split and Chain stitches. In addition, the student will learn how to make seashells and a sea anemone and how to attach the shells. Hotel Info., Seminar Registration Dates to Remember Hotel Information: The hotel will be THE VILLAGE INN AND CONFERENCE CENTER in Clemmons, NC, just off I-40. Rooms will be offered at the negotiated rate of $109 per night. Hot breakfasts included. Important Dates to Remember: Seminar Registration The full registration packet with final information will be released the first week of January 2023 for CAR members on- ly. Seminar registration will be open with an early booking discount until February 15. Registration for other EGA members and non-EGA members will start February 16 and will be open until the end of March. There will be a $25 fee to be added to the registration fee for non-EGA members. Our featured stitching shop will be: Located in Winston Salem, just off I-40 in Stratford Village, Winston Salem, the shop is just a few miles away from our hotel. Sue O’Brien, owner, welcomes all EGA seminar participants and will offer a discount to EGA mem- bers seminar weekend. She has a fabulous selection of canvases and threads in her wonderful store. This will be our last region seminar until 2025. In 2024 we will offer spring and fall retreats only: one in-person and one virtual. In August 2024, our neighboring region, Tennessee Valley, will be hosting the National Seminar in Atlanta, GA. We hope to support Tennessee Valley Region by encouraging our region members to attend the National Seminar that year.
